October Speaker Information

Robert A. Yokley, Ph.D.

Robert was born in Hohenwald, TN and grew up in Tennessee, Indiana, and Maryland. He

started his college career at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro TN but com-

pletion was postponed while he served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Viet Nam (1969-70). After

he graduated from Middle Tennessee State Univer-

sity in 1972 with a B.S. degree in chemistry he ob-

tained employment with the Food and Drug Divi-

sion, Tennessee Department of Agriculture in

Nashville. It was here that he developed a passion

for analytical chemistry and a desire to further his

education. Thus, he later entered graduate school

at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville where he

obtained a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry under the

direction of Professors Gleb Mamantov and Earl

Wehry. He then worked on various environmental

research projects for the Coal Research Division of CONOCO, Inc. in Pittsburgh, PA for five

years before accepting a position with Ciba-Geigy Corporation in Greensboro, NC. This al-

lowed him to return to his first love, analytical chemistry. Due to various mergers, Ciba-

Geigy became Novartis in 1997 and Syngenta in 2000. During his tenure, he traveled to nu-

merous locations around the world including China, India, Japan, Viet Nam (2008), South

Africa, Switzerland, England, and The Netherlands to give invited oral presentations or to

solve analytical issues of importance to Syngenta. He is the author or co-author of more than

20 published, peer-reviewed research papers and six book chapters on applications of gas and

liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. He also serves as a referee/reviewer for four

scientific journals.

Robert retired from Syngenta in July 2008 but continued working part-time for the company

until July 2013. He serves as a Councilor for the Central North Carolina Section of the Amer-

ican Chemical Society (ACS) and as a member and sub-committee chair of the ACS’s Nation-

al Committee on Nomenclature, Terminology, and Symbols. He also occasionally writes arti-

cles for the publication Celebrating Chemistry.

Robert currently lives in Belews Creek, NC and Lawrenceville, NJ. The half time residence in

each state is because his wife, Phyllis Fangli Yokley, is vice-president of Finance and Opera-

tions for a Specialty Chemical Company near Princeton, NJ. Robert enjoys driving his vin-

tage Triumph sports car in tours and rallies, boating, tennis, and writing. He and his wife

share a love of travel, hiking, fine and exotic dining, poker, and frequent socialization with

family and friends. They are members of the Lutheran Church. He has two daughters and

four grandchildren living in Kernersville and Greensboro.

Honoring our 50 and 60 year CNC-ACS Members

Our 50 and 60 year members will be recognized at the Analytical Meeting on Tuesday, Octo-

ber 27, 2015 at Syngenta. This is always a special meeting as these individuals represent 350

years of chemistry experience. They started their chemistry careers during a time when re-

search and teaching were carried out in a very different manner. Consider:

1960: 5 hours: time it took for a chemist to do a search for one compound

Mid 1960s: Calculations still being done by slide rule

1980: hand held scientific calculators become “reasonably” affordable for students (~$75 in

1980 dollars)

Late 80s: use of the Internet introduced

1987: Microsoft Excel released

1988: Introduction of modems (editor’s note: I had a blazing fast 9600 kbyte modem on my

NMR in 1989)

1993: Adobe offers pdf file free of charge

1998: Founding of Google

Chemistry Day 2015 – Announcement

and Call for Volunteers!

Colleagues,

Our annual Chemistry Day celebration will be here soon and we would like to invite you and your college, organiza-tion, or company to participate! Chemistry Day is our way to celebrate National Chemistry Week and to increase the public appreciation of chemistry, increase the interest of young people in the Triad in chemistry, and generate enthu-siasm for the creative future of chemistry.

The theme for 2015 is “"Chemistry Colors Our World: Exploring the chemistry of dyes, pigments, and light”. We plan to have our Chemistry Day celebration on Sunday, October 18, 2015, 1 pm – 4 pm at the Frank Family Science Center at Guilford College in Greensboro. We hope to have a number of activities exploring the positive impacts of chemistry and communicating the importance of chemistry to our quality of life. These activities include hands-on activities, chemistry shows, and demos/displays from local business and colleges. This event will be open to the public and will be absolutely free.

Past celebrations have featured activities and presentations by numerous scientists representing great Triad univer-sities and businesses. We would love for you and your college, organization, or business to organize a hands-on chemistry activity or a demo/display table on some interesting and fun aspects of chemistry. Relevance to this year’s theme, to your research activities, or to your company’s products are a plus but please feel free to choose any topic of general chemistry which would be fun and interesting to our youth. In addition, we welcome any donations of items that could be used for goody bags or game prizes (pens, pencils, erasers, magnets, etc.).

We also need volunteers for other operations such as registration, snacks, cleanup, etc. Please contact us if you would like to participate so that we can save a spot for you!

Thank you very much for your time and support!

Kindest Regards,

Dear Silver Circle Members,

REMINDER – our next meeting will take place Tuesday, 13 October at Syngenta in Greensboro. The goal will be to discuss and address any last minute planning details for National Chemistry Week (Sunday, 18 October) and to develop our action plan for participation in the new ACS “Science Coaches” program for the preK-12 grade levels. We need your ideas and guidance. This will also be a good time to establish the dates and activities for our six meetings in 2016 (bring your calendar). For example, would anyone be interested in a day trip to one of the sci-ence museums in Raleigh?

Bring a dish to share (drinks will be provided) but bringing a dish is not a requirement to attend. We will dine from 6:30 to about 7:15 PM followed by our business meeting.

Contact Robert Yokley for more information.
