Overview
Smart Licensing is the next generation enterprise license model for all Cisco software products. It simplifiesthe Cisco software experience and helps you to understand how Cisco software is used across your network.

Information About Smart LicensingSmart Licensing is software based licensing end-to-end platform that consists of several tools and processesto authorize customers the usage and reporting of the Cisco products. The Smart Licensing feature is aimedat giving users an experience of a single, standardized licensing solution for all Cisco products. The users arenot required to install licenses on the devices.
The feature has the capability to capture the customers order and communicates with Cisco Cloud LicenseService through Smart Call Home transport media to complete the products registration and authorization ondesired performance and technology level.
The usage information from all products owned by a customer is kept in a single central database and usedby Cisco for usage based pre/post-paid billing. The customers have the visibility into their current softwareusage across their entire network at any given time.
Benefits• Seamless software experience encompassing purchasing, licensing management, reporting, andreconciliation/ renewal/ billing.
• Reduce cycle time with activation and registration that are automatic, instead of manual.
• Obtain visibility of software consumption (what's purchased and what's deployed) across your network.
Overview1
• New streamlined way of viewing andmanaging software licenses.Make changes within minutes, insteadof days or weeks.
• New cloud-based solution architecture and tools, in line with where the industry is headed.
• Eliminates the need for return materials authorization (RMA) or re-hosting action.
Supported Software Models and PIDsThe Smart Licensing platform supports the following flexible software consumption models:
• Own Up-Front (perpetual)
• Upgrade and Support over Time
• Subscription
• Utility (pay as you go)
Supported PIDs
The following PIDs are supported with Smart Licensing.

How to Configure Cisco Smart Licensing
Enabling Smart LicensingThis procedure enables Smart Licensing on the device.
Before you begin
• Ensure that Smart Call Home feature is enabled before using Smart Licensing.
Review the sample configuration of Smart Call-Home feature provided in the Example: Smart Call Home,on page 12 section.
• Call-home uses HTTPS to transport the licensing messages to Cisco back end license cloud.
• After disabling Smart Licensing feature, you should reload the router. Failing to do so may result inunpredictable behavior.
Procedure
PurposeCommand or Action
Enables privileged EXEC mode.enable
Example:
Step 1
Router> enable
Enters global configuration mode.configure terminal
Example:
Step 2
Router# configure terminal
Activates Smart Licensing on the device.license smart enableStep 3
Example: When you enable Smart Licensing, the Cisco Software License (CSL)and all licensing calls pass throughthe Smart Agent.
Note
Router# license smart enable
Use the no form of the command todisable smart licensing.
Note

OverviewHow to Configure Cisco Smart Licensing
PurposeCommand or Action
Exits the global configuration mode.exit
Example:
Step 4
Router# exit
Registering the DeviceIn this task, the device supplies token id to the Cisco back-end and receives an ID that is valid for 365 days. This certificate is saved and automatically used for all future communications with Cisco. This only needs tobe done once per device.
Procedure
PurposeCommand or Action
Enables privileged EXEC mode.enable
Example:
Step 1
Router> enable
Registers the device with the back-end server.Token id can be obtained from your virtual a/cin the Smart Licensing server.
license smart register idtoken idtoken
Example:Router# license smart register idtoken123
Step 2
Deregisters the device from the backend server.license smart deregisterStep 3
Example: When you use this command, thedevice is deregistered from thelicensing cloud. All Smart Licensingentitlements and certificates on theplatform are removed andappropriate notifications are sent tothe platform and features that wereusing the entitlements. If you wantto use smart licensing again, youshould run the license smartregister command again with atoken. Tokens are valid for 1-365days (user-specified)..
Note
Router# license smart deregister
(Optional)Manually renews the ID certificationor authorization.
license smart renew[ID | auth]
Example:
Step 4
Router# license smart renew ID
Overview4
OverviewRegistering the Device
Authorizing the DeviceWhen the device is registered, the agent stores the entitlement requests and checks with the backend to checkfor usage authorization. Authorization responses are valid for 90 days. After the expiry of the term, the deviceshould get reauthorized from the backend again.
Verifying Smart Licensing ConfigurationUse the following show commands to verify the Smart Licensing configuration.
To display all the license information, use the show license all command as shown in the example below:
Router# show license all
