“Then there is the stigma that all female athletes are or 'get turned' in to lesbians anyway. It frustrates me that being someone who was in a heterosexual relationship for most of my life I am giving this stigma validity in the minds of the ignorant people who believe it.”

CARLY WILSON

“Sports choose to focus on feminine attributes when promoting their

teams and they choose to promote heterosexual couples to the media to

compensate for that public perception.”

“I am out and proud”MICHELLE HEYMAN

“There are a few areas in my life that I know are not accepting of gay people. Some are work related, others to do with family members being unaware. I know I would lose some job opportunities. I guess its an unknown area as there are not many out athletes in my sport in Australia.”

ANON

“Everyone is very supportive and accepting. Obviously we are all there to do a job and personal lives stay out of the sport but it is no secret and never has been.”

ANON

I am extremely lucky to be a female athlete in Canberra. The Canberra community is very supportive as a whole. Having a few successful female sporting teams in Canberra with prominent gay athletes means there is a big support group available.
