Happy Holidays

Expires 1/30/2013

1 O&A Nov-Dec 2012 Main 10/25/12 1:42 PM Page 29

Each year, the day afterThanksgiving is infamouslyknown as Black Friday. Black

Friday is known as the official start ofthe holiday season. Shoppers are knownto rise at the crack of dawn – or earlier– and pack the stores, chasing downsales and “hot” items. Black Friday eventurns violent on occasion, when desper-ate customers just cannot wait to gettheir hands on something- Classicexample; the Tickle Me Elmo doll fromthe 1990’s.

These days, more and more peopleseem to be using the internet to do theirshopping. In 2011, it was estimated thatretail store’s sales online would growabout 16%, according to “Black Friday– Online Vs. Offline Stories.” Noticingthat online sales were up, stores such asTarget and Walmart began their BlackFriday sales as soon as Thanksgiving;only to be one-upped by the internetagain when companies such as Amazonbegan sales as early as the Mondaybefore Thanksgiving.

“Consumers are growing increasing-ly comfortable with both internet andmobile technologies and online retailersare beginning to look more convenient,”says “Black Friday – Online Vs. Offline

Stories.” Because of society’s comfortwith cell phones and tablets, severalcompanies use the Gift Groupe, which, operating on several websites, sends outdaily offers at noon plus special offers at6:00 a.m. for those in line on BlackFriday. Besides the shopping goingfaster, many prefer shopping online onBlack Friday to save on specials onshipping costs, to save on gas and trans-portation hassles, to avoid the loudcrowds, and to avoid getting up early.

So why do people still drag them-selves out of bed to go shopping onBlack Friday? Mostly, they like the tra-dition and challenge that the day brings(not to mention the boost in the econo-my). Shopping offline is easier if youare not sure what you are looking for, since one cannot exactly surf the entireinternet looking for just the right thing. While searching in stores, one mightcome across something that they didn’teven realize that they needed or wanted.

Target, Walmart, Toys R’ Us, andother large chain stores get more cus-tomers on Black Friday than smaller, local stores. For instance, in 2011,Target’s and Best Buy’s sales increased10% to 14%. These are the kind ofstores with the gigantic sales and linesweaving out the door, waiting for the

doors to open. The smaller stores tendnot to do anything special for BlackFriday. There is a small surge of shop-ping in Historic St. Charles, but notmuch. The area sustains itself on itscharm and the city advertises for thebusinesses there. Shoppers keep comingback because they hear about placessuch as Designer Like from word ofmouth. (Designer Like sells accessoriesthat are made to look like they aredesigner brand names.) Some enjoyshopping in stores because they canmake an entire experience out of it;spending the day with friends and fami-ly.

Shopping online may be convenient, but can definitely not replace shoppingin a physical store for all things. Forexample, one can avoid annoyances

such as clothes that don’t fit by tryingthem on in a store instead of trustingthat the size that was ordered will fit.Shopping inside of physical stores willprobably never become completelyobsolete.

The holidays can be a magical time ifyou let them. It can be hard to enjoy, sometimes, with all of the normal responsi-bilities of life and a sleigh-full of cooking, shopping, decorating, and - let’s face it -smiling and being cheery more than usual.Allowing yourself (and your family andfriends) some time to enjoy some of theseevents may help to bring back the pure joyand merriment of the season.

The Fox TheatreNovember 20 - December 2

Some of thesetips are for

next year. Dowhat you canthis year andstart planningfor next year.

Shop for holi-day gifts allyear. If youshop inDecember, shopin small localstores instead of malls or superstores for uniquegifts, easier parking and smaller crowds.

Wrap gifts as you buy them Buy wrapping paper, ribbon and tags on sale after Christmas so you willhave it handy.

Trim a smaller tree. Do not decorate every nook andcranny in your house. A few well placed decorationsis enough.

Buy your holiday cards early this year, and afterChristmas for next year when they are 50% off.Address, stamp and sign a few cards every evening.

Take time to relax. I love to turn on the tree lights, listen to Christmas carols, and relax with a glass ofwine or a cup of cocoa. Aaah.

Stay well. Boost your immune system with vitaminsand minerals to help you stay healthy. Stop byO’Fallon Nutrition for information on immuneboosters.

Reduce your sugar intake. Increased consumption ofdesserts and sweets during the holidays makes yousluggish and tired. When you are tired you getbehind schedule, and stress out, and the vicious cir-cle begins.

Delegate. Make a list of your holiday tasks. Choosethose you enjoy to do yourself and delegate the rest(or hire someone to do them). You may be surprisedthat no one notices what you left out!

Simplify your entertaining. Go out for Thanksgivingor Christmas dinner. If you eat in, order somethings, such as the salads, vegetables and desserts.Host a pot luck dinner or party instead of doing itall yourself. Hire someone to clean or decorate.

At the end of each day review what you haveaccomplished and be satisfied. Don’t feel bad aboutwhat you did not get done. Remember “Some daysyou are the pigeon and some days the statue!” ~Dilbert

Once upon a time, libraries werepretty dull destinations for somepeople. If you weren’t a book-

worm (like me), you visited the library toget books for school assignments or forresearch on a topic of special interest.

My local library was housed inside theCity Hall of my town. When I steppedinside the building, the smell of the booksmingled with the odor of the freshly-mopped hallway floor leading there. I still remember my librarian, Mrs.McMullen. She was probably in her 40’s,but looked ancient to my 11-year-old eyes. She wore glasses (of course) and met mewith a smile that both welcomed me andwarned me to be quiet and to “respect thecollection.”

The walls were bare, except for a fewwatercolor paintings from local artists. There was no sound unless Mrs.McMullen was stamping due dates insidebooks or someone was thumbing throughthe card catalog.

That was a long time ago. I haven’taged (!), but libraries have changed so dra-matically in the last 40 years that youwouldn’t recognize the place.

Check Out WhatYou’ve Been Missing

If your last visit to the library was morethan a few years ago, you are missing outon one of the best resources in your neigh-borhood for music, movies, books and spe-cial events for everyone in your family.

In Good TasteTasty Tidbits from Eateries in and Around Chesterfield

Comparing Wine Types Let's talk simple, straight forward

and useful wine facts. There are a lot ofboring details I am going to leave out. Here are some simple tidbits you mightwant to know:•• SSaauuvviiggnnoonn BBllaanncc vvss.. FFuummee BBllaanncc::These are the same grape. Sauvignonhas citrus and grapefruit characteristics.Usually medium to high in acidity.Fume has the same characteristicsexcept it's aged in oak barrels. Thisgives the wine a tint of wood. •• PPiinnoott GGrriiggiioo vvss.. PPiinnoott GGrriiss:: These are also the same grape.A lot of wine people refer to Pinot Grigio as Italian in origin.Pinot Gris origin is every other place except Italy. •• CChhaabblliiss is a French Chardonnay.•• RReedd BBuurrgguunnddyy is a French Pinot Noir.•• SShhiirraazz vvss.. SSyyrraahh:: This is also the same grape. Shiraz isreferred to the wine whose origin is Australia. Syrah is fromevery other country. Australian style of Shiraz is very fruit for-ward. Syrah, in general, is very earthy and dryer than Shiraz. The way the wine is made brings out the different flavor profiles. •• SSyyrraahh vvss.. PPeettiittee SSiirraahh:: Two completely different grapes thatproduce different wines. Petite Sirah is so dark it's almost black. There is also a slight smell of concord grapes. Petite Sirah ismuch bigger than Syrah. It is the classic "teeth stainer." •• The word "Meritage" is a name from California. It refers toan American Bordeaux blend. The roots of this word isCalifornia by nature, not French. When pronouncing this word, remember it rhymes with heritage.

I know guys, this seems like some worthless information. Some of you might find this interesting. Personally I'm tired ofpeople pronouncing Meritage as if they just left the FrenchRiviera. Two larger rooms with state of the art audio visual equipmentwill take up to 80 seated, 100 for cocktails, if put together, or twogroups of 40 each simultaneously.

McIntyre expects to accommodate corporate and private eventsincluding business and association conferences and meetings, wed-ding rehearsal dinners and receptions as well as an expanded pro-gram of Balaban’s wine dinners, classes and special tastings in thelarger spaces.

For November and December the wine program features aDominus Wine Dinner at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 4, and a PineRidge Wine Dinner at the same time on Sunday, Dec. 16.

“Balaban’s historically and today gives customers a good timeat a good price. The new space allows us to build on that and stillserve our wine store and café clients.” McIntyre said.In August Balaban’s captured a coveted best award of excellencefrom Wine Spectator in the magazine’s 2012 awards to restaurantsfor their wine cellars and pairing of food and wine. Other Balaban’s accolades list a designation as a 2012 best restau-rant from St. Louis Magazine and 2012 first place from Out &About as an eclectic upscale Chesterfield restaurant. Opened in late 2009 in Chesterfield’s Dierbergs Marketplace,Balaban’s stars as St. Louis’ only restaurant and retail wine storewhere customers pay the same wine retail price dining in house ortaking wines home.

Expansion of the Balaban’s kitchen as well as extension of theircatering and deli operations, additional bathrooms and integrationof the original wine bar with the new space complete the renova-tion plans.
