Our Source of Power

John 14:12-31

I. The necessity for the power

(Joh 14:12) Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do

shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my

Father.

(Joh 14:13) And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father

may be glorified in the Son.

(Joh 14:14) If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

(Joh 14:15) If ye love me, keep my commandments.

A. We have a great

Commission

Vs. 12

(1Co 15:58) Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,

forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in

the Lord.

(Mat 28:19-20) Go ye therefore, and teach all

nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to

observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even

unto the end of the world. Amen.

B. We have a great

Commination

Vs. 13-14

(1Th 5:17) Pray without ceasing.

(Eph 6:18) Praying always with all prayer and

supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all

perseverance and supplication for all saints;

(Psa 55:17) Evening, and morning, and at noon, will I pray, and cry aloud: and he

shall hear my voice.

(1Ti 2:1) I exhort therefore, that, first of all,

supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

(1Ti 2:2) For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we

may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness

and honesty.

C. We have great

Commandments vs. 15

(1Jn 2:3) And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his

commandments.

(1Jn 2:4) He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a

liar, and the truth is not in him.

(1Jn 2:5) But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God

perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.

(1Jn 2:6) He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even

as he walked.

(1Th 4:1-4) Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye

have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye

would abound more and more. For ye know what commandments we

gave you by the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, even your

sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication: That every one

of you should know how to possess his vessel in sanctification

and honour;

II. The narrative for the power

(Joh 14:16-19) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the Spirit

of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with

you, and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little

while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. (Joh 14:26) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my

name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance,

whatsoever I have said unto you.

A. He is the Comforter Vs. 16 & 18

Another; denotes

another of the same kind

(Joh 14:16) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you

another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

Comforter: GK. parakletos called

to one side: intercessor, consoler: - advocate,

(Joh 14:16) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you

another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;

(Exo 13:17) And it came to pass, when Pharaoh had let the people go, that God led

them not through the way of the land of the Philistines,

although that was near; for God said, Lest peradventure the people repent when they see war, and they return to

Egypt:

(Exo 17:8-10) Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with

Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand. So Joshua did as Moses

had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur

went up to the top of the hill.

(Exo 17:11-13) And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that

Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed. But

Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and

Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the

other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the

sword.

(Act 1:8) But ye shall receive power, after

that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye

shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in

all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost

part of the earth.

(Heb 13:20) Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the

sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant,

(Heb 13:21) Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is

wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for

ever and ever. Amen.

(Rom 8:26) Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should

pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession

for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

(Rom 8:27) And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,

because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will

of God.

(Mat 11:28) Come unto me, all ye that

labour and are heavy laden, and I will give

you rest.

B. He is Concealed Vs. 17 & 19

(Joh 14:26) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send

in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said

unto you.

(Joh 16:13) Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear,

that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to

come.

(Joh 14:26) But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will

send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your
