DESCRIPTION

The second lesson considering figurative language and God’s order (first natural, then spiritual) focusing our attention on the bread from heaven (manna and Jesus) and the eating of His flesh, which leads us to consider the communion. We’ll find that in partaking of the bread and fruit of the vine we share with Christ. Like baptism, the supper may involve physical elements, but has a spiritual significance.

Bread from Heaven

John 6, CB NT p. 171

“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.

John 6:9-10, CB NT p. 171

When the people saw the sign that he had done, they said, “This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

John 6:14-15, CB NT p. 172

Bread & Fruit of the Vine

Matthew 26.26-29, CB NT p. 53

Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.”

Matthew 26:26, CB NT p. 53

And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

Matthew 26:27-28, CB NT p. 53

I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.”

Matthew 26:29, CB NT p. 53

“Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant”

“Take, eat; this is my body.”

Roman Catholic Church teaches...

Transubstantiation, in consequence of which the entire substance of the bread and the entire substance of the wine are converted respectively into the Body and Blood of Christ in such a way that “only the appearances of bread and wine remain” (Council of Trent, Sess. XIII, can. ii: manentibus dumtaxat speciebus panis et vini).

Catholic Encyclopedia

“Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant”

“Take, eat; this is my body.”

“Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant”

“Take, eat; this is my body.”

Why Jesus was NOT speaking of a physical change

1. Jesus still physically present with the disciples. He still possessed His literal body and blood.

“Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant”

“Take, eat; this is my body.”

Why Jesus was NOT speaking of a physical change

2. Jesus specifically refers to the contents of the cup, after the blessing, as “the fruit of the vine” indicating that it had not changed to his blood.

“Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant”

“Take, eat; this is my body.”

Why Jesus was NOT speaking of a physical change

Why Jesus was NOT speaking of a physical change

3. The blood for a covenant requires death, yet Jesus had not yet died (Hebrews 9.15-22).

“Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant”

“Take, eat; this is my body.”

Synopsis: The second lesson considering figurative language and God’s order (first natural, then spiritual) focusing our attention on the bread from heaven (manna and Jesus) and the eating of His flesh, which leads us to consider the communion. We’ll find that in partaking of the bread and fruit of the vine we share with Christ. Like baptism, the supper may involve physical elements, but has a spiritual significance.

“Let all that you do be done with love.”
