History of University of Sargodha: In 2002, Government College was upgraded into a University. The University of Sargodha has become a legendary centre of

Higher Education, in a short span of time, respected nationally as well as internationally for its brilliant performance in teaching and research activities.

It is a pleasure to provide them opportunities to get higher education through intellectual, moral and academic library which enables them to face the challenges of modern civilization.

Accordingly, the University focuses on the overall personality development of the students through curricular, co-curricular and sports activities.

DATA GATHERING

preliminary data gathering

Before the visit, OD practitioner on his own behalf got the basic organizational information from websites.

Financial conditions from Profit and Loss statement were provided by the client.

Some other, information about programs , mission , vision and values was given to OD practitioner.

Two interviews were conducted one unstructured and other one is structured.

First interview:First with the Chairperson of Department of

Library Sciences, in which we do the general discussion about the library functioning and strengths, weaknesses and problems.

He also told us about software purchased for online library (cost PRs. 70 lakh)and work already done in this respect.

In Second structured Interview, with Raja

Ghulam Mustafa, in charge of IT

Developments at UOS Library, what

developments have been done previously

and what are needed now

How many books and journals are available

in UOS library approximately?

80000 books

What is best point of UOS library in your

opinion?

Centre of the campus

What is weak point of UOS library in your

opinion?

User of library are not literate

Mostly students do not visit library on regular basis. What are reasons behind it in your view?

Teacher do not encourage them.Students often complain that recommended

books are not available in library, what are the reasons and your proposed solution?

Interact with chief library. How many online libraries can be accessed by

UOS research students? Please specify the name if any.

HEC digital library, US digital library,

How many books/journals are stolen /lost every year in library?

No record If a thumb impression scanner is used for security

purpose, do you think it will decrease the stolen or lost books rate?

It is for user ID, but RFID can be used for this purpose. no

We have been told that each department recommends a list of books every year. what steps are taken to fulfill these recommendations?

Purchase is done by department.

In UOS online library, books for 2-3 disciplines are available, why availability is not made for all subjects and disciplines?

Depend on departmentWhat steps should be taken for availability of

books (all disciplines) in UOS online library? There must be centralized policy. In establishing online library, what was the cost

including software? That’s almost 15000000RS

How many people were recruited for bringing out this change?

6 professionalsWhat were the technological changes made

in this regard?Lot of….We have a digital database system in library

but only 1 PC is available here.do you think it is sufficient?

It will be installed soon.

On the basis of data collected by OD Practitioner and Client,

it was concluded that theArea which required the most attention were

of security of books( high ratio not disclosed)digital library (established but need

improvement) Online library at UOS.( technology is available but not in proper use)

Library Security System: Installation of RFID system (radio

frequency identification)Digital and online library:For the step of digital library, formation of a

computer lab comprising over 50 computers.

Establishment of an online library providing access to all disciplines in UOS.

Radio frequency Identification System:

Radio-frequency identification (RFID) is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking.

Some tags require no battery and are powered and read at short ranges via magnetic fields (electromagnetic induction). Others use a local power source and emit radio waves.

This chip will be attached to any page on

book and a security gate at entrance,

when a book is stolen, security gate will

detect it quickly when it comes in contact

with.

Chip on an issued book will be off by the

system.

This will solve the issue of stolen books.

A database system is already established

at UOS library but only one PC is available

for use.

Our recommendation is to provide at least

50 computers for use of students.( based

upon record of per day visiting students in

library).

An online library is established but it

provides information only to medical and

engineering disciplines.

We propose that it must contain not only

books but also journals for all disciplines at

online library.

As it already has an infrastructure but a

need for improvement and change.
