Opening Credits/Sequence...

● Since the early 1980's, opening credits and sequences have been used to identify actors and crew, usually placed in order of appearance or importance.

● Traditionally they would include the following: the name of the production company, the producers and executive producers name, the directors name, the top billing actors and, of course, the title of the movie.

Some examples, Clockwise (from top left): Bad Robot- Production company.

The name of an executive producer, displayed clearly.Warner Bros pictures- Distribution Company.

Les Miserables- Film title.

Opening credits...

● The opening credits are usually displayed as text, superimposed on to a static image. However, It can also be shown over action in the show. It is often accompanied by music.

● Sometimes these opening credits are followed by a brief scene or short cinematic sequence ti build anticipation or set the story/mood of the film.

Cinematography...

● Cinematography can also be classed as a convention of an opening scene. It can be used to foreshadow what the theme of the film shall be.

● An example would be when a Romantic film uses establishing/master shot to convey the setting.

Sound...

● The sound and music can be vital in an opening sequence, it can be used to build anticipation and to set the scene or atmosphere of the whole film.

● An example would be when a Horror movie opens with eerie music playing.
