Local Farmers MarketsFruits and Vegetables
Wegmans Food Markets, founded as a produce company more
than a century ago, has stayed true to its roots—a long history of partnering with local farmers to offer customers the freshest, best produce. Realizing that customers want to know where their food comes from, Wegmans seeks out family farms near our stores, not just for produce, but for locally sourced beef, pork, and seafood as well.
Sourcing local and regional food is part of our commitment to making a difference in every community we serve. We have an established network of partner farms we work with in Virginia, and throughout our markets, but we’re always looking to cultivate new relationships to offer our customers a growing selection of locally and regionally sourced food.
We look for talented farmers who are passionate about what they do and meet a standard set of criteria. Quality, consistency, farm infrastructure and transportation, and Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) Certifications, are just a few of the things we look for. We then examine the products the grower can provide us, whether it’s for one or two stores, or the entire company.
Our Near Our Stores program is truly about partnership. Our Wegmans team members stay closely connected with our farm partners throughout the growing season and all year round. They are an extension of our family, and they help make it possible to provide our customers with the best and freshest local produce.
To learn more about Wegmans Near Our Stores program, visit the ‘About Us’ page on Wegmans.com.
Farmers interested in learning more about working with Wegmans can contact:

The Culpeper Downtown Farmers Market’s partnerships with local VCE Agency educational staff and Culpeper Department of Human Services have encouraged increased participation in youth nutritional education programs and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program redemptions during the 2017 market season. The FMPP grant was crucial in marketing those ongoing efforts to the public through special events such as Market Customer Appreciation Days and a National Farmers Market week celebration. The Market was also able to increase advertising with a new over-street banner, social media promotions, live radio announcements, a Farmers Market guide highlighting vendors and events, and traditional magazine and newspaper advertise-ments. www.culpeperdowntown.com/farmers-market.html
The Madison County Farmers Market’s participation in the FMPP grant has allowed us to upgrade our website to be mobile compatible as well as get a new, brighter logo. We have been able to advertise on the radio and do more newspaper ads. We look forward to the upcoming year with new and more vendors and reaching more customers. Madison Farmers' Market is a producer only market (75% must be produced locally) that values our customers on a first name basis. www.madisonfarmersmarket.info
The Piedmont Environmental Council's Buy Fresh Buy Local program has been able to use the FMPP grant to fund annual design and mailing of the Northern Piedmont guide to over 75,000 households in the region. The grant has also covered a local food buyer and seller networking event in the October 2017. The event was a casual happy hour social where the farmers and chefs rotated around the room, introducing themselves and exchanging information about products they have for sale or items they’re interested in buying. The grant provides resources for two more similar events, each building on the previous one and drawing a larger group of growers and buyers. Stay tuned for the next event slated to happen in Fall 2018! www.pecva.org/events
The Rappahannock-Rapidan Regional Commission launched its Purely Piedmont label pro-gram in November to promote the region’s locally grown food and beverages. Similar in concept to the state’s Virginia Grown program, producers who register their products with the program will receive labels with the Purely Piedmont logo to affix to their products, in addition to digital versions of the logo to incorporate into their own marketing materials. Displaying the regional logo allows consumers to easily identify our farmers’ products and make more informed choices. There is no cost to participate in the Purely Piedmont label program. Use of the logo is governed by both product and use standards contained within a license agreement that producers must submit in order to become members. Learn more at www.purelypiedmont.com.
The FMPP grant funds have been helping to support, improve and expand the ‘Tween Rivers Trail. Free workshops are offered quarterly on topics designed to assist agri-tourism businesses with expanding their customer base, improving operational efficiency, and providing networking opportunities. Trail Site Mem-bers are being interviewed to get to know them and their businesses better. The information collected will be used to help better market and promote their business, and will be shared with the trail site members so they can learn more about one another, connect and network. Data will be collected on the impact the ‘Tween Rivers Tail may have on each trail site with regard to revenue and customer base. Since the grant award, the ‘Tween Rivers Trail has nearly doubled its membership from 35 to 64 trail site members! Learn more at www.tweenriverstrail.com.

Recipe courtesy of Nature’s WellspringFresh Homemade Salsa
INGREDIENTS USING FRESH PRODUCE*:
3 cups chopped tomatoes, undrained
1-2 chopped Jalapeño peppers
1 onion chopped
1⁄4 cup packed cilantro leaves
1 tsp. Lemon juice
1 tsp. sea salt
DIRECTIONS:
1. Chop the fresh produce.
2. Combine all ingredients in a food processor.
3. Blend until ingredients match your desired chunkiness.
4. Pour into bowl and serve.
This recipe is best served fresh. Enjoy!
* When choosing your fresh produce, remember a variety of tomatoes make a beautiful appearance and a full rich flavorful salsa. We love using a rich heirloom like Cherokee Purple along with a surprising orange like Orange Icicle. Many like using tomatillos as well. Also, there are many different types of peppers/Jalapeños available. For those needing a more milder Jalapeño, look for the Tam Jalapeño—same great taste, but less heat. Enjoy finding the varieties that give the flavor you love.

owned and operated by Brian Green and his wife. While their portion of the farm is relatively small, they are part of the much larger, family-owned Hartland Farm and Orchard, which has been a working farm for eight generations.
“It’s a real working farm, and we offer something every season,” Brian Green said. Hartland’s currently has four separate operations, spanning three generations. They start with strawberry picking in May, add blueberries, black and red raspberries, blackberries, peaches, and vegetables during the summer months, pumpkins and a corn maze in the Fall, and Christmas trees in the winter.
Green Truck Farm offers the berry and vegetable pickings of the late Spring and
Summer months. Brian and his wife started their operation 10 years ago. “This is all I ever wanted to do,” he said. He grew up on the farm, working the land with his dad, who currently runs the Christmas tree and corn maze section of Hartland’s.
Green Truck is one of the best pick-your-own farms my family has visited. It is beautifully arranged with bountiful berry bushes. We had no problem filling multiple pints of black and red raspberries, and blueberries. And the fruit is very safe. They use integrated pest management, and while that won’t get them the label of organic, Brian said “it is as close to natural as they can get.”
The Green’s also strive to help their local community. They partner with two local churches, who come out to the farm and help plant and harvest large patches of potatoes and tomatoes to donate to local area food banks. “It’s a big hit, since it is rare for food banks to have access to fresh vegetables,” Brian said.

Composting at home is a great way to reduce your waste while creating the very best thing you can add to your
garden. It’s fun, easy and a pretty forgiving process. A friend told me that she loves back-yard composting because you can put as much or as little e ort into it as you like. Your organic materials will decompose.
What is Composting?Composting is controlling the process of micro-organisms decomposing organic materials into a usable soil amendment. The microbes do the work. You just need to create the environ-ment to keep them happy. They are very simple creatures that just need air, water and organics to decompose.
What can be composted? When I refer to organics, I mean materials that were once living, such as food scraps, yard waste, untreated woods and paper. Animal products (meat, dairy, fats, oils, bones, shells) are compostable, but should be kept out of your backyard compost pile because they will likely attract critters before they decompose.
What equipment do you need? You should start with a kitchen container to col-lect your veggie/fruit trimmings and food scraps
(including co ee grounds, teabags and eggshells) as you generate them. You can buy a kitchen compost bin or repurpose a used container with a lid. For outside, you can buy a compost bin or tumbler. Those are great for small backyards and for minimizing any potential nuisance to your neighbor. Or, you can make an open compost bin with wood or wire fencing. Or, simplest yet you can just make a compost pile. A pitchfork will come in handy too!
Browns vs GreensOne of the core concepts of com-posting is getting the right mix of materials. The right mix will ensure that the microbes that are doing the decomposing are not smothered by rapidly decomposing food (greens), nor are they starving in a pile of dry woody, leafy or paper-based materials (browns). Everytime you empty your kitchen container of food scraps (greens), you should add 3 times that amount in browns. Browns are harder to come by so here are some you can nd around the house: wood chips, old mulch, dried grass clippings, leaves, shredded paper, paper egg cartons, paper napkins/towels, tissues, cardboard tubes, pizza boxes (torn-up), and compostable take-out containers.
How do I compost?Bring your full indoor compost container to your outside compost bin or pile, add it to your com-post. Cover the freshly added food scraps with three times that amount in the “browns” that you have been collecting. When your outdoor bin/container is full, empty it out into a pile. This will help the materials continue to decompose by reintroducing air (the microbes need air!) to the pile. Don’t be surprised if there are bugs or smells when you empty out your compost bin. Sunlight and fresh air will take care of both pretty quickly. If your compost bin or pile is too stinky and liquidy, add more browns. A little bit of steam rising from your compost pile in the morning is a good sign. Heat is a by-product of healthy microbial activity and a sign that you created a working compost pile!
When can I use it?Good things take time. Before you use it for your garden, a compost pile should probably be at least six months old and not feel warm to the touch. The compost won’t go bad if you decide to let it age even longer. When it’s ready, just mix your compost into your garden beds and watch your garden thrive.

NEWS FROM PEC
Food brings people together. But healthy food is sometimes hard to come by. Despite Loud-
oun County’s reputation as a wealthy community, a surprising number of children in the county — one in 10 — live in households with limited access to healthy food. The consequences can be stark for these children, as their development, ability to learn and overall health is directly related to the quality of their diet.
“The notion that there are around 10,000 children in Loudoun facing a chronic lack of access to su cient nutritious food is troubling, both as a parent and as someone that knows the bounty that Loudoun County has to o er,” says Chris Miller, PEC’s President. “It left me thinking about what resources we could bring to the table. If we can stretch a little, what can we do to educate local resi-dents and contribute to a solution.”
An inspiration for addressing food insecurity in Loudoun came to Chris through his involvement with the Fauquier Education Farm, based in Warrenton. The Fauquier Educa-tion Farm recruits volunteers to plant, harvest and pack fresh produce grown on about 10 acres at Moriah Farm for those in need. This past growing season, more than 60,000 pounds of produce was delivered by
the farm to food-insecure residents in Fauquier, Culpeper and Rappahan-nock Counties.
The impact of the Fauquier Education Farm presented a possible model for PEC to make a di erence in Loudoun County. Over the past couple years, we have worked to restore and reinvigorate the produc-tivity of our Roundabout Meadows property, a 141-acre farm at Gilbert’s Corner in Loudoun County. Over last year, we took a closer look at the feasibility of creating a Roundabout Meadows community farm on part of the land, which would partner with food pantries and other community organizations in Loudoun to increase the availability of fresh produce for those in need.
Key to our assessment was outreach to food pantry operators, such as Loudoun Hunger and other allied non-governmental organiza-tions (NGOs) that already work to address chronic food insecurity among vulnerable populations in the county. We wanted to see if others thought a modest community farm at Roundabout Meadows would make a di erence. The answer to that question was a resounding “Yes.”
Currently, food pantries contract with or receive donations of fresh produce from farms, grocery stores
and larger food banks. But, a common theme among these organi-zations was the need to o er more fresh food to their clients. This recognition has focused the atten-tion of county-wide hunger relief e orts for children, seniors and families on expanding the availability of whole-some, fresh, locally-produced fruits and vegetables. And this demand for fresh produce remains unmet.
We envision our community farm being sited at the northwest corner of Roundabout Meadows, an area planned in PEC’s ve-year management plan for future fruit and vegetable production because of the quality of the underlying soils. We have been fortunate over the past year to receive guidance from Ellen Polishuk, formerly of Potomac Vegetable Farms, in developing a growing plan and identify infra-structure needs. We plan to employ produce variety trials, cover crop practices and other sustainable farm-ing techniques as demonstration projects.
We will be starting small, begin-ning with just a portion of three acres that were cleared this fall for
future production. A limited start re ects the need to rst secure nec-essary infrastructure and equipment, and it helps provide time to rejuve-nate the productivity of the soils. However, our feasibility study for the community farm envisions scaling up production and public educa-tion programming over the next ve years.
It’s exhilarating to think about the possibilities of a community farm operation at Roundabout Meadows. With the property’s high visibility, good access and close proximity to Loudoun’s population centers, the community farm presents an incred-ible opportunity for local residents to get on the land and see rsthand the connection between land conserva-tion, natural resource stewardship and the food we eat. More impor-tantly, visitors and volunteers can have that experience while in service to those in need.

The PATH Foundation’s mission is to strengthen the health and vitality of our community, a pursuit that is in line with the e orts of Buy Fresh, Buy Local. With childhood wellness as one of the PATH Foundation’s four core
tenets, the foundation has invested in programs to enhance nutrition and physical activity for students in Fauquier and Rappahannock public schools. Each school system has worked to develop the program best suited for their district, with the support of the PATH Foundation. Though di erent in name and scope, both pro-grams are thriving to bene t the overall health and wellness of their students.
FRESHFRESH, which stands for Fauquier Reaches for Excellence in School Health, is bringing a culture of health and wellness to Fauquier County Public Schools and the communities around them. In the program’s initial work, FRESH engaged with 20 schools to incorporate physical activity in the classroom, support and enhance cafeteria nutrition, and encourage healthy habits throughout the county. Starting with kindergarten through 2nd grade classrooms, more than 1,950 students have been experiencing learning in a physical and active environment. This year, FRESH has increased fresh, local food in the cafeterias, redesigned school menus, trained kitchen sta in scratch cooking techniques, and hosted fruit and veggie tastings for kids.
Commit to Be FitAt Rappahannock County Public Schools, Commit to Be Fit focused on community health by implementing a variety of new programs. With goals like enhancing school nutrition, student-centered healthy choices in the cafeteria, and reducing the amount of time students spend sitting down, Commit to Be Fit regularly sets goals for students and sta . With tness workshops, kids’ cooking classes and nutrition counseling, Commit to Be Fit was just as relevant to the outside com-munity as it was to students involved at school by making many classes available to Rappahannock County residents. So far, Commit to Be Fit has added daily fresh fruit options and made lunches healthier, while increasing sales and adding 12 new cafeteria menu items. Within the community, Commit to be Fit o ered more than 300 classes, workshops and events.

Perched on a hilltop with a peaceful view of the surrounding countryside, Full Moon Farm in Culpeper is home
to Michael Frank and his family. Moving to Virginia from Massachusetts after finishing degrees in biotech and plant pathology, Michael had a yearning to farm and began the search for land.
He and his wife, Susan, eventually found a hillside property in Culpeper. “We just fell in love with this place,” says Michael. “The steep hill has posed some challenges but we’ve learned how to manage it.”
Michael decided to look into growing certified organic culinary herbs. He first started out growing plants to sell but determined a need to expand into something value-added. Working with Virginia Department of Agriculture, Michael developed protocol for producing essential oils and hydrosols from the herbs he grew. To his knowledge, he is the only certified organic herb farm in Virginia producing the products he does.
Culinary herbs are started in the greenhouse and either sold as potted plants or planted in his field of 50 irrigated raised beds. These raised beds, amended by composted manure from the three resident llamas, are home to herb plants that eventual become fresh cut herbs, dried herbs, essential oils and hydrosols. This year, with help from an NRCS grant, Michael will be adding a hoop house to extend his growing season and fixing up the farm road. Plans to expand raised beds down the hill are already in the works.
Near the greenhouse is a processing shed where herbs are dried on food grade stainless steel then further processed into dried herb blends (everything in the blends but the salt and pepper comes from the farm) or distilled to make the essential oils and hydrosols.
“I didn’t really have an idea where I was going at the beginning, but ten years in I am proud of the products we make and feel passionate about the work I do,” says Michael.
You can find all Full Moon Farm products at Inn at Little Washington, Leesburg and Fairfax Farmers Markets and the dried herbs at Whole Foods Charlottesville.
