On Any Given Sunday Service• “I wonder when service will be over… I’m starving.”• “Wow, she’s really good looking.”• “We need to hurry up… I can’t wait to watch some

March Madness.”• “I hate him!”• Rest of the week?

It Could Happen to Any of Us• It did to a man after God’s own heart! 2 Sam. 11-12• While no one knew it, he lusted after another man’s wife.• He went further and employed that lust in the form of

adultery.• Further, he murdered the woman’s husband.• Ultimately, he sinned

against God through all this.

Reality: We Have Unclean Hearts• We’re polluted. Matt. 15:10-11, 15-20a.– We try to create laws to do the right things… but the

heart remains unclean. Matt. 23:27-28; Col. 2:20b-23– We try to “will ourselves” to have a clean heart only to

find we simply lapse into the “old man”. Rom. 7:24

David Knew the Answer• The answer was not within him.• A clean heart starts with God’s creative power at

work within us. Psa. 51:10– In this way, we cannot glory in our ability (because it is

imperfect).– Instead, we glory

in our God!

The Answer is Found in Our Savior• God did not write “new laws” as if that would

somehow clean our hearts.• He did not tell us to “try harder” as if that would

be our salvation.• He gave us Jesus.

Through Christ…• We have the forgiveness of sins. Wonderful!• Forgiveness alone, however, does not change our

polluted hearts.• Ultimately, God must cleanse our hearts and

renew our spirits. Psa. 51:10-17
