Omnipresence

Immanence Transcendence

Easy Definition“Everywhere”

• Omnipresence refers to the quality of being present everywhere, in all places, at all times.

Easy Definition“Present”

• God's immanence refers to His presence within His creation. (It is not to be confused with imminence, which refers to the timing of Jesus' return to earth.) A belief in God's immanence holds that God is present in all of creation, while remaining distinct from it. In other words, there is no place where God is not.

Easy Definition“Above, Apart”

• Transcendence--God is above, other than, and distinct from all he has made -he transcends it all.

Transcendence Immanence

Two Expressions of Omnipresence“How is God Omnipresent?”

• In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1

• 11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God,

to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things,

and by your will they were created

and have their being.” Revelation 4

• For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:9

• Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth? Psalm 113:5-6

• It is he [God] who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to dwell in; who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness. Isaiah 40:22-23

• For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the Lord our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? Deuteronomy 4:7

• For your Maker is your husband, the Lord of hosts is his name; and the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer, the God of the whole earth he is called. Isaiah 54:5

• For thus says the Lord God: “Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out…I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I myself will make them lie down,” declares the Lord God. Ezekiel 34:11, 15

• 7 Where can I go from your Spirit?Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,if I settle on the far side of the sea,

10 even there your hand will guide me,your right hand will hold me fast.

11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide meand the light become night around me,”

12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;the night will shine like the day,for darkness is as light to you. Psalm 139

Transcendence

18 “But will God really dwell on earth with humans? The heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain you.

2 Chronicles 6

Immanence

26 And he made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place, 27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for“‘In him we live and move and have our being’;as even some of your own poets have said,“‘For we are indeed his offspring.’ Acts 17

Contrast of Transcendence and Immanence

Transcendence

• God exists outside of space and time

Immanence

• God is present within space and time

23 “Am I only a God nearby,” declares the LORD,“and not a God far away?

24 Who can hide in secret places so that I cannot see them?”declares the LORD.

“Do not I fill heaven and earth?” declares the LORD.Jeremiah 23

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. …....18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father's side, he has made him known.

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life. 2 The life appeared; we have seen it and testify to it, and we proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. 3 We proclaim to you what we have seen and heard, so that you also may have fellowship with us. And our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son, Jesus Christ. 4 We write this to make our joy complete. 1 John 1

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

Colossians 1

• In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

Genesis 1

• "The Spirit of God has made me, And the breath of the Almighty gives me life” Job 33:4

• 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.” Luke 3

• 15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. John 14
