OUR PARISH MISSION
Founded in 1833, Old St. Mary’s parish is the first Catholic parish in the Chicago area. Guided for more than a century by the vision of the Paulist Fathers, we are a diverse and welcoming community dedicated to serving the spiritual needs of the Loop, South Loop and the greater Chicago area.
As a unified Church and School community, Old St. Mary’s Parish promotes the mission of the Paulist Fathers to welcome those who have been away from the church, to build bridges of respect and collaboration with people of diverse backgrounds and religions, and to promote justice and healing in our society.

LUNCH BAG PROGRAM AT SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
Our neighbors at Second Presbyterian Church at Michigan and Cullerton have a Lunch Bag program Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 1 pm. Food is
distributed for free on a "grab and go" basis to those who are homeless or living with food insecurity. Volunteers are always needed. If you’d like to volunteer, send an email to Vicki Reynolds at vickireynolds24@gmail.com. Financial contributions for the program are like-wise needed and very much appreciated. You can donate online at 2ndpresbyterian.org.

Feasts of Summertime in the Church
If Easter is the Springtime of the Church, then Pentecost is the Summer. And what happens in the summer, usually? Sunshine, warmth, special schedules, lightening of workloads, vacations, swimming and generally, less pressure are some of the thoughts that come to mind. Likewise, after Pentecost, after the intense seasons of Lent, Triduum and Easter the Church lightens the load as well – giving us more space and time to reflect on all we learned in the intense seasons of conversion. But lest we move too quickly, the Church also gives us time to transition from the big stories of the mysteries of Christ to their integration into our everyday lives – which we call Ordinary Time, the numbered Sundays. This week and next we celebrate Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi Sunday, respectively. The reflection of these Sundays takes us to two reflections on God’s love. I will tackle Trinity here today, and Corpus Christi next week. Whenever I speak with you about “Fr. Brad’s Axioms,” somewhere in the back of my mind the first axiom, “it’s a mystery” begins for me with the whole subject of the Holy Trinity. I do not think you can explain the Holy Trinity without acknowledging mystery. As I say to people when talking about “it’s a mystery” you should always get partial credit on any religion test for including that you are talking about mystery. And by the same token, you will never get full marks in answering a question on Trinity (at least from me) if you do not include mystery in your answer. Why? We begin with God. Got that? I think most people are fine with One God, Creator, Mighty All-Powerful, Eternal – Lord of All. We’re fine with that. Our Jewish brothers and sisters are fine with that. The Genesis account of the creation of the world, the spirit of God is not a person but an extension of the One True God, not separate at all. But then Jesus shows up, and everything changes. Jesus, from the get-go, knows he is the son of God, as every good Jewish boy would (and every good Jewish girl would know they are a daughter of God). But at what point does Jesus know he’s THE SON OF GOD? Don’t think about this while you are driving! The Messiah did not need to be the SON OF GOD, but he is. The whole passion, death and resurrection, and Pentecost is recast because it is GOD’S SON. And if Jesus is THE SON of God, how is God one and now two. And to move the math equation along, now the Spirit (who is sent by Jesus, and proceeds from Him and the Father and) who hovered over creation in Genesis is distinct as well. The heart of this mystery is explaining how GOD, could be on earth as God & Hu-man in Jesus, and be sent as SPIRIT when SON is at the right hand of GOD in heaven. Confused? Remember, I said it is a mystery. But as faith-filled human beings we want to explain this, and we try our best. And our best is about our experience of a living God, who loves us so much, he can’t help but save us and then give us the tools to keep on saving the world (what we’re trying to do in both the coronavirus and the discrimination virus). Our experience tells us there is GOD/Father, GOD/Jesus, GOD/Holy Spirit – ONE GOD/3 persons, that is not really a human person but distinct ways of interacting with us. I said its mystery – and words so easily get in the way of mystery, but we need to explain our beliefs. And this is what takes it to the next level in mystery – something we MUST always remember. GOD is bigger than us, and consequently un-capturable. Like the prophet Elijah, we only glimpse a little of God as God goes by. — continued on page 5

GRACE AND ETERNAL LIFE
Moses is a man after our own hearts, for haven’t we all dealt with more than our share of stiff-necked people? Indeed, haven’t we all gotten a little stiff-necked ourselves at times? Complaining . . . impatient . . . quick to anger. How lucky for Moses—how lucky for all of us—that God is exactly the opposite! And we don’t even have to guess about it. The Lord tells us so directly. Accordingly, Moses does what we all need to do. Even with the tablets in hand, he bows down and asks for God’s forgiveness and grace. Encouraging us to live together in peace—and in God’s favor—the Apostle Paul knows all about this grace, joyfully invoking Christ’s grace on us along with God’s love and the Holy Spirit’s. “Rejoice,” he says. And when it comes to rejoicing, John offers us the gladdest words of all: the assurance of eternal life through Jesus.

God so loved the world that he gave his only Son. — John 3:16a
ST. JAMES FOOD PANTRY The Food Pantry at neighboring St. James Catholic Church (2907 S. Wabash) really needs volunteers to help pack and distribute food on the morning of the second Saturdays of the month. The next date is Saturday, June 13th. If you would like to volunteer or wish more information about this service opportunity, please call Cathy or Peter at 312.842.1919 or email Cathy at cmoore@stjameswabash.org.
And if the heart of this mystery of the Holy Trinity is this God that is bigger than us, we must remember that what makes God bigger (if you can use a comparison to describe the one who is beyond and encompasses all), is the reason there is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – is constantly creating love. They cannot be divided, separated or disconnected because they are one God. Where we exist inside this mystery is exactly there. We are inside the mystery of God’s love, inside the Trinity, we are surrounded by God and God’s love. On this Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity we must figure out how to live that incredible love to reshape our lives and the world around us. Fr. Brad

Sheltering Together Online Support Group Thursdays 7-8:30, beginning June 11
These are challenging times for all of us, as we navigate change and the possibility of a “new normal”. It’s also a time to learn to support ourselves and each other in new ways! I’d love to offer a facilitated online group to meet
and talk about how to survive, and even thrive, physically, emotionally, relationally, and spiritually. The intentions of the group are to: offer a space to share experiences, losses, joys
and concerns. provide resources and helpful hints for living
well during covid-19 restrictions and beyond. give each other support and encouragement
as we slowly begin the process of re-emerging into public spaces.
discuss how the experience of COVID-19 has affected our faith practices, and the challeng-es (and blessings) that we’ve encountered.
The group will be free of charge. Donations for my time and the work of the Claret Center are welcome, but not required. Please contact me directly to discuss payment options, if you wish to contribute. If you’re interested in joining us, please email me at rachelschrips@icloud.com. You’ll receive an email containing a link to a secure Zoom meeting before the 2nd week of June. Rachel Schripsema, MAPC Psychotherapy Resident The Claret Center rachelschrips@icloud.com 872-216-1808
