A Statistical Study of North Carolina and Army of Northern Vir-ginia Casualties at The Battle of Gettysburg
July 1-4 1863
By Locke W. “Skip” Smith. Jr.
What originally began as a mortalitystudy of the soldiers from NorthCarolina during the battle ofGettysburg, developed into a compre-hensive study of the entire Army ofNorthern Virginia. The reasoning forthis is three-fold: a) to provide a solidmore up-to-date study of North Caro-lina troops during this battle, b) pro-vide a good source for the regimen-tal numbers and losses for the entireConfederate Army and c) to allow forsome comparisons for the regiments, brigades, divisions and corps thatformed General Robert E. Lee'sfamed army.
Methods and Notes: Please keep thefollowing in mind when studying thetables.
1) For all of the North Carolina cau-salities shown in the tables, each ofthe 17 volumes of North CarolinaTroops - A Roster, edited by HenryJordan (this includes the addendumsfor Vol.'s I - VII) were the primarysource for the statistics. Each regi-ment, man by man, was examined forany casualties received while atGettysburg. Also, keep in mind thatonly the dates July 1-4, 1863 wereused in the North Carolina study, asthis would have been when the armieswere actually on the field. Any casu-alties received after July 4 during the
retreat are not in the statistics, as wellas any deaths from wounds receivedduring the battle that occurred later. Thus, this is not a "campaign study"but a "battle study."
2) The four categories used in theNorth Carolina study are as follows:1) killed, 2) wounded & captured, 3)wounded and 4) captured (or miss-ing.) Please remember that these self-explanatory situations could haveonly happened during the dates ofJuly 1-4, for it to be considered a sta-tistic. On a sad note, please be awarethat many of the men that werewounded, wounded & captured orcaptured (missing) would eventuallydie either from the wounds receivedor of disease while in Federal pris-ons but, that in itself is the source foranother study that I plan to start soon.
3) To be able to really complete theNorth Carolina study, it was realizedthat the numbers engaged would beneeded. Ideally the June 30, 1863Muster Rolls would be the best sourceof information for what each regi-ment actually had just one day priorto the battle. In reading through Regi-mental Strengths and Losses atGettysburg, Fourth Edition by JohnBusey and David Martin, I noticedthat they had been able to examinethese Muster Rolls for many of the
regiments and when not available fora particular regiment, they were ableto compare Muster Rolls before andafter the June 30, 1863 Muster Roll. Thus, all figures (for all CS regi-ments, including those from NorthCarolina) for the "engaged" numbersare from Busey and Martin's work.
4) When this study was begun manyof the old standards (but somewhatoutdated) sources, such as Fox's Regi-mental Losses in the American CivilWar and Livermore's Numbers andLosses in the Civil War in America:1861-1865 were examined but, afterreading through the procedures andmethods that Busey and Martin wentto ensure that the most up-to-date in-formation available was used, it wasdecided to use this particular worksolely. This should allow for moreconsistency across the board in all ofthe regiments listed in the tables. Inthe work for their book, Busey andMartin were able to consult and col-laborate with known Civil War His-torian, Robert K. Krick and were ableto pull from his valuable work, TheGettysburg Death Roster: The Con-federate Dead at Gettysburg, ThirdEdition, the most recent findings inConfederate casualties at Gettysburg. In summary, all information for allof casualty information for all states(other than North Carolina) comes

from Busey and Martin's work. Onlythe casualty figures for North Caro-lina come from my study in the 17volume North Carolina Troop - ARoster series. One should note thatthe casualty figures for Busey andMartin's work have a slightly differ-ent meaning. For their work, "killed"includes either those that died inbattle or died of their wounds beforethe end of 1863. "Wounded" includesboth those that were wounded andthose that were wounded and cap-tured. Busey, Martin and Krick havetruly done some outstanding workand as they would be the first to ad-mit that this is an on-going project asmany of the figures are not as pre-cise as one would wish. Given thelack of information for some of theunits, this is to be expected but, all inall this study should allow for someserious study and discussion.
In closing, let us remember a fewthings. All of the men who foughtduring this battle were heroes. Thisview though has not been the casesince the close of the battle due to thefact that immediately after the battlethe finger pointing began, especiallybetween Virginia and North CarolinaThe cause of this rests squarely onthe press from Richmond, who be-gan insinuating that the troops fromthe other states did not "support" theVirginia troops, under Gen. Pickettduring the climatic charge on July 3.That the newspapers began callingthis part of the battle "Pickett'sCharge" simply added fuel to the fire. There were 41 regiments in thecharge and Pickett commanded fif-teen of them. Out of the twenty-sixother regiments in the charge, fourmore were from Virginia(Brockenbrough's Brigade) leavingtwenty-two that came from otherstates. To keep referring to this ac-
tion as "Pickett's Charge" is not onlya misnomer, but also an injustice tothese other regiments. All regimentsdid their full duty on that field ofbattle and neither this article, nor thestatistical study, are trying to cloudthe situation but, instead try to shedsome light on the actual losses suf-fered by Lee's Army. With that beingsaid we all should be able to walkaway with more admiration for the
Confederate Soldier. Those that haveancestors that fought for the OldNorth State will be extremely proudand know that the troops from NorthCarolina, as Governor Zebulon B.Vance coined, "stood in the frontrank" of the Confederacy. For it is not"one out of every four Confederatecasualties were from North Carolina"but, as this study provesit was actually 30 % !!
