Staffing Updates September Spectacular
The school year has begun with great success. We welcomed 714 students to school on Sep-
tember 2nd. Bonjour! This number includes students in French Immersion grade 6 from Terry Fox P. S. and students attending Herb Campbell for the first time for Grade 1 French Immersion, Kindergarten or joining the Herb Campbell Family from another school. Eve-
ryone is welcomed back.
Please note that the Kiss’n Ride area is at the front door now and there is NO PARKING in
this area AT ANY TIME. Supervision is provided from 9:00 to 9:15 and after that time it is necessary to sign children in at the main office. A reminder that the doors are kept
locked so you will have to ring the bell.
On Wednesday, October 1st we hope you will be joining us for the Open House from 6:30 to 8:00 PM. This is a good opportunity to meet your child’s teacher and to visit their learning
environment. This is an opportunity for intro-ductions as time doesn’t permit interviews.

Time for school -
A pArent’s guide to
regular school
attendance
Elementary school is a wonderful time in the life of a child, a time of great strides in learning and
in social and emotional development. Many
things affect your child’s success, from the qual-
ity of his or her teachers, to the makeup of the
class. One of the most important factors is your
child’s regular and timely attendance.
Getting to class on time, and avoiding absences,
are critical if your child is to get the most out of
school. It seems obvious. But the fact is that ele-
mentary students tend to miss and average of
eight or more school days during the year. What can you as a parent do to help ensure your child’s
proper attendance?
Is your child missing more? Why does attendance
matter?
First, understand that getting to school–every day
and on time–matters at every level, perhaps even more so in elementary school. That’s because
important learning occurs daily, right from the
start of class. And because you establish patterns
early on. By being punctual and responsible, chil-
dren are acquiring positive habits about school
attendance. Some other things to consider:
1. By being late, children miss important social
time with their peers before school begins.
2. Students who are late often feel embarrassed
or self-conscious.
3. Late arrivals can disrupt the routine of the
classroom.
4. A last-minute rush can be stressful for the
child, and get her to school in the wrong
frame of mind.
5. Missing even five or 10 minutes of the day
can make it harder for the student to under-
stand the material being taught.
6. Frequent absenteeism leads to gaps in a
child’s skills and knowledge base, cause the
child to fall behind his peers and hurt his self
-esteem.
7. Too many missed school days can increase isolation, as the child stands out from her
classmates and misses opportunities to de-
velop socially.
8. Absenteeism makes it tougher for the child to
develop a good rapport with the teachers.

Terry Fox's story teaches
your child courage,
empathy
Terry Fox made history when he began his Marathon of Hope in 1980. He planned to run across Canada to raise money and awareness for cancer research and he was doing it with
one artificial leg.
Terry lost his leg to cancer and used his story to inspire others. Fox made it more than 5,000 km across the east coast, Quebec and Ontario
before the cancer spread to his lungs, prevent-ing him from continuing. Terry died at the age of twenty-two on June 28, 1981.
On Sept. 13, 1981, the first Terry Fox Run took place at 760 sites across Canada with
approximately 300,000 people participating. The first run raised $3.5 million. To date, the Terry Fox run has raised more than $400 mil-lion for cancer research.
Our school participated in the Terry Fox run
on Wednesday, September 24th. This event was organized by Mr. Mitchell. For more in-formation about Terry Fox or to find out about community events, go to www.terryfox.org.
Picking UP STUDENTS
We are aware that, for a variety of reasons, parents
often choose to pick up their children at the end of
the school day rather than have them take the bus
home. We would like to make parents aware that,
if you take your child out of class even 5 minutes
before the end of the day you are shortchanging
his/her instructional time and interrupting the flow
of teaching in the classroom.
While 5 minutes a day does not seem like much,
added up, it is over 3 full school days by the end of
the year. Therefore, we would ask that if you
are picking your child up at the end of the day
you wait until after the 3:35 dismissal, unless it is an emergency. This practice will ensure your
child maximizes his/her educational experience,
while also honouring the learning that is going on for the rest of the students. Please remember re-
quests for early dismissal of your child should be
made in writing prior to the end of the day. This
practice has become extremely important with the
new dismissal procedures and picking up children
at the last minute, except in the case of emergency,
is discouraged because it can prolong the bus de-
partures. Once students are dismissed, we can’t get
them off the bus.
World teAchers’ dAy
This year's Teacher Apprecia-
tion Day is Sunday, October 5th. The first World Teachers' Day took place on Oct. 5, 1994. Developed by the United Na-tions, the day is intended to commemorate the work of teachers and their contributions to society. During the week of gearing up to October 5th, take the time to let
your child's teacher know he or she is truly appreciated. Thank your child's teacher and let him/her know they are making a difference. You will be among parents and students from around the world observing World Teacher Appreciation Day. Thank you Herb Campbell Teachers! Merci à tous les profs!
Bus Driver Appreciation Day
Peel schools will pay tribute to bus drivers on Bus Driver Appreciation Day on October 29. The day will be celebrated with special activi-
ties and events that provide teachers, students and parents an opportunity to thank the people who safely transport over 36,000 students to and from school each day. If your child rides the bus to school, take this opportunity to thank the bus driver for his or her contribution and ask your
child to do so too. The Peel board appreciates the essential service bus drivers provide each school day. October 29 provides an opportu-nity to give these individuals the recognition they richly deserve.
Safety reminders ensure safe
travel to and from school
School bus safety week is Oct 20-24
According to the Canada Safety Council, it is 16 times safer per kilometre to travel on a school bus than in a family vehicle. However, while bus transportation is safe, accidents do occur and many of these incidents involve
individuals outside the bus. To ensure children stay safe in and around school buses, it is im-portant to reinforce the following safety re-minders:

Tips for riding the bus
Take a seat as quickly as possible, put
belongings under the seat and stay seated.
Never stick anything out of the window, including part of your body.
Refrain from eating on the bus. If a choking incident occurs, the driver may not be able to help immediately.
Wait until the school bus stops before standing
up to exit the vehicle.
Tips for exiting the bus
When getting off the bus, take two large steps away from bus. If you have to walk in front of the bus, do so at least three metres (10 giant steps) away from the bus.
The driver must be able to see students exit-ing the bus and will give a signal when it is safe to cross. If more than one student is crossing in front of the bus at the same time, they should cross in single file.
Children must never reach for something that is under the bus without the driver’s permis-sion. Let the driver know that something is un-
der the bus or wait until the bus moves out of the way.
Wonders of Space
The Grade 6 students have been exploring the
wonders of the space and they are fortunate to take part in a space workshop that will held at the school during the day on Tuesday, October 7th.
As an added bonus, there will be a star party that evening from 6:00 to 8 pm to further explore the night sky.

National Tree Day
National Tree Day serve as a celebration for all Canadians to appreciate the great benefits that trees provide us - clean air,
wildlife habitat, reducing energy demand and connecting with nature. On March 2, 2011 a private members mo-tion to declare the Wednesday of National Forest Week, National Tree Day, received consent from the House of Commons.
The motion was presented by Royal Ga-lipeau, M.P., at the urging of Tree Canada. National Tree Day takes place on the Wednesday of National Forest Week at the end of September.
This year, National Tree Day took place on Wednesday, September 24, 2014! To celebrate National Forest Week, Herb Campbell purchased 32 trees from the Town of Caledon with funds from Tree Canada. Each class planted a tree around the pe-
rimeter of the school in the no-mow zone. The no-mow zones were created a few years ago to promote wildlife habitats and to help reduce the strong winds our school yard has in the winter. About 7 years ago, our school also
planted 250 spruce trees in the no-mow zone. This was the beginning of this on-going project. Visit our HC Environmental Council for a map of our planting projects. http://herbcampbellcommunitygar-
den.blogspot.ca/

A Colourful Sight to See!
Throughout the year, the students and staff are going to be celebrating their school spirit. Research shows that school spirit creates a positive learning environment for both students and teachers. We will be working to foster a safe, caring, inclusive
and cooperative climate in our school com-munity through implementation of colour teams. Students will be encouraged to earn points for their colour teams in a variety of ways:
By demonstrating the Peel character
traits
By participating in school spirit days
By participating in school-wide clubs
and teams
Our hope is that our colour teams will con-
tribute to the development of positive rela-tionships with our school by rallying the students together.
The first spirit day, "Show Your Colours Celebration" will be on Friday, October
3rd. We look forward to many colourful days ahead!
Pals are on the yard!
Herb Campbell Public School has an out-standing group of students who have vol-unteered to be our newest group of Play-ground Activity Leaders. These fine stu-dents have showed an in interest in being leaders on the yard.
PALS encourages other students to partici-pate in fun games during nutrition breaks. The objectives of this program is to in-crease physical activity, decrease conflict and reduce the incidence of problems in the yard in general.
This is a wonderful leadership opportunity for our students. Mrs Harvey is overseeing these students and notes that they are full of smiles and are happy to be part of such
a great team. When it comes time to get out there and play, PALS always make room for one more.
