The Black Death Hits Europe
What Was the Black Death? The “Black Death” was the
name given to the Bubonic Plague that struck Europe near the end of the Middle Ages
How did people get the disease? The “Black Death” was transmitted by
fleas that were carried on ratsBecause European cities did not have
good sanitation systems, the rats were all around in cities where ever trash and debris allowed them to thrive.
The fleas were then able to transfer to human hosts and infect them.
Certain strains of the disease were infectious, so once humans got it, they could give it to other humans.
How Did the “Black Death” Get to Europe?Genoese merchants sent their ships to
the Crimea to trade with the merchants on the Silk Road
Rats carrying the fleas were able to get on board the ships there.
By the time the ships got back to the City of Genoa in Italy, the crew of the ship had been infected. The members of the crew then infected the rest of the city.
From there it spread throughout Europe.
