NUCLEAR FUSION

Nuclear energy…

Nuclear energy…

Is energy released from an atoms nucleus

You can release this energy in two different ways

You can release this energy in two different ways

NUCLEAR FUSION

LETS TALK ABOUT NUCLEAR FUSION

Unlike nuclear fission,

Nuclear fusion is the bonding/fusion of an atoms nucleus

It occurs NATURALLY in stars

It can also be reenacted in machines called…

It can also be reenacted in machines called…

FUSION REACTORS

But how do they work

Nuclear energy can also be released by the fusion of two light

elements

Unlike nuclear fission,

there is no limit to the amount of

fusion that can occur

Fusion reactors are now in experimental stages

at several laboratories in the United States,

at several laboratories in the United States,

and around the world

In nuclear fusion

s

In nuclear fusion

you get energy when two atoms join together to form

one

1+1=1

In a fusion reactor

In a fusion reactor

hydrogen atoms come together to form helium atoms

In a fusion reactor

hydrogen atoms come together to form helium atoms

neutrons

In a fusion reactor

and vast amounts of energy

It's the same type of reaction that powers hydrogen bombs

and the sun

What are the risks of nuclear fusion?

To run a fusion reactor you need little radioactive fuel (tritium)…

And therefore there is a very low loss of radioactivity

So the harm it would do to people and the environment…

Is much less than the harm done by nuclear fission

This would be a cleaner, safer, more efficient and more abundant source of

power than nuclear fission

Unfortunately we don’t have the technology to efficiently use them

YET

Today to create energy with renewable rescources we use

WIND

WIND HEAT

WIND HEAT

WATER

WIND HEAT

WATERSUN

These are the sources of the energy

To create the energy we use power plants like

WIND MILLS

VOLCANOES

DAMS

SOLAR PANELS

The advantages to using renewable rescources instead of fossil fuels

Is that they are cleaner and in infinite amounts

Nuclear fusion is an example of renewable energy

But since we don’t have fusion reactors, yet, we use other rescources

To produce the energy the source must go through a power plant

Renewable rescource power plants all work in a similar way

with slight variations from source to source

Let’s take wind as an example

The power plants for wind are windmills

The blowing wind turns the windmill, which turns the turbine attached to a

generator

The generator turns the kinetic energy into electrical energy that then is used

everyday

In conclusion…

We can say that we are soon to have fusion reactors

But for the time being

But for the time being

We can, and will, use what we have
