The science behind the scenes
Optimiser
Sophisticated software for optimum underfloor heating performanceEffective design of an underfloor heating system is fundamental to ensuring that the system performs to expectation. The design we create reflects how the property will be used, providing an energy-efficient solution. Full heat loss calculations ensure precise performanceOptimiser compares each underfloor heating system against the heat losses of each room to ensure precise performance is achieved.
Meets British Standards BS EN 12831 and BS EN 1264 requirementsNu-Heat’s Optimiser is unique in that it calculates the heat losses of the property in line with BS EN 12831 and works to the underfloor heating design standard BS EN 1264.
Taking every detail into accountOptimiser factors in every other criteria into the design including floor coverings, which can impact on the heating response time, as well as ventilation losses and location of the property.
Produces bespoke CAD design layoutsBespoke CAD design layouts are produced that detail the complete floor heating system ready for installation including:
• Floor tube layouts
• Manifold settings and locations
• Entire system schematics
• Electrical wiring diagrams
Nu-Heat performance reassuranceInvesting in a Nu-Heat system means we take on full design responsibility. Specified to exceed legislative and performance requirements, our underfloor heating and integrated renewables systems are designed to meet the performance criteria of every bespoke project.

Intelligent interrogation of heat pump technologyAs the name suggests, our heat pump design software, Predictor, assesses performance and based on your project’s criteria, calculates the right heat pump technology for your project.
Weather-based performance simulationPredictor runs a simulation of performance over an average year, based on local monthly weather data from the Met Office and taking account of the changing seasons. Unlike other simulation programmes, Predictor uses the daily temperature cycle, including cold nights and warm days rather than the average daily temperature, for greater accuracy.
MCS & RHI Government fundingTaking into account real-life usage, Predictor provides:
• Annual energy usage and running cost predictions
• An energy summary for MCS compliance and certification
• Annual Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) figure and Star Rating for RHI annual payment figures
• A comparison with other fuel options such as gas and oil
Optimum integration with underfloor heatingWhen a heat pump is being integrated with underfloor heating, Predictor is run a second time, once the underfloor heating design is complete, to ensure that the heat source is matched perfectly to the heating system – just one of the benefits of choosing an integrated system from a single supplier.

How it works
Radiators circulate heat inefficiently meaning thermostats have to be typically set 1 or 2 degrees higher to achieve the same comfort levels as UFH. The room temperature is highest at the ceiling and coldest at the floor. Excessive air circulation increases ventilation losses, making fuel costs higher.
How it worksA conventional radiator system works by passing high-temperature water through a sectional metal panel. The water flow temperature has to be high due to the small surface area of the radiator, which results in lower overall efficiency with modern condensing boilers and more importantly, heat pumps.
Creating ideal comfort conditions, underfloor heating, with its jointless multi-layered UFH tubes, provides even warmth, eliminating stuffiness, draughts and dust movement as well as giving you space-saving interior design freedom. And with significantly lower water temperatures, underfloor heating saves you both energy and money.
How it worksUFH works by pumping a controlled flow of warm water, from any heat source, through tubing embedded in the floor. Because the emitting area is large, sufficient warmth is provided across the whole floor surface to heat the room effectively. With low water temperatures required, underfloor heating is the perfect partner for both condensing boilers and heat pumps, providing the highest levels of energy efficiency and lowest possible annual running costs.
Nu-Heat’s underfloor heating provides a superior heating choice all combined with improved comfort, greater interior design flexibility and optimum energy efficiency.

Nu-Heat’s range is designed for use within a suspended timber joisted floor. To allow other trades to get on with work on upper floors, Nu-Heat’s patented ClippaPlateTM can be installed from below so that the floor deck can be fitted early on, prior to the underfloor heating tube being installed.
Alternatively, by installing ClippaPlateTM over joists and then laying the floor deck, trades can work quickly without damaging the underfloor heating and with a reduction in the potential Health and Safety issues relating to open floors.
How it works The flexibility of Nu-Heat’s FastfloTM tubing allows installation in suspended timber floors from either above, before the deck is laid or from below, after the deck has been laid, with no additional floor height build-up. The tubing is fed through pre-notched or drilled joists and held securely with Nu-Heat’s patented aluminium ClippaPlateTM, allowing the system to be fixed with little effort.
The ClippaPlateTM system uses highly conductive aluminium heat spreader plates to rapidly transfer heat from the FastfloTM pipe through the floor deck into the room above, efficiently and effectively.
There is also a floating floor solution for joisted floor constructions. For more information visit www.nu-heat.co.uk/joisted
Specification considerations• Dry floor construction
• Medium heat output
• Exceptionally light
• Medium response
Installation considerations• Installation over joists before deck
is installed or between joists after deck is installed
• Floor components fitted at first-fix stage
• Requires joist notching or drilling
• Floor coverings can be fitted as soon as the deck is in place
Joisted floors are suspended timber floors that use joists to support the floor deck. The underfloor heating system lies either between or straddling the joists.

Quick and simple installation with just 15mm height build-upLoProTM10 is a floating floor with
minimal height build-up and enhanced
thermal properties, ideal for use with
gas, oil and LPG condensing boilers.
It is simply laid over any floor deck and
across any floor level, making it suitable
for retrofit projects as well as new
build. Unique in the market, the edge
detail is flexible so that LoProTM10 can
fit irregular shaped rooms, often found
in older properties.
How it works Gypsum board is laid over an existing floor deck. The tube is inserted and a castellated panel is used to run the tube back to the manifold and for any irregular areas. LoProTM10 provides a practical, economical alternative to a traditional radiator-based system and is designed for use with existing or new boilers. A LoProTM10 system requires a flow temperature of 45-55oC – much lower than a typical radiator system, which would have a flow temperature
of 70-80oC – complementing the performance characteristics of condensing boilers perfectly.

Nu-Heat is exceptionally experienced with acoustic floor constructions. We work in partnership with Knauf to deliver high performance, high mass, gypsum based flooring products specifically designed to work with Nu-Heat’s range of UFH solutions.
In partnership with Knauf, we independently test the acoustic performance of floors at professional test facilities such as SRL, which proves that airborne and impact noise levels meet or exceed Part E of the Building Regulations. Typical applications include office to residential conversions, flats, apartment blocks and multi-storey commercial premises.
How it worksUFH tube is integrated into a floor cassette comprising construction elements proven to improve acoustic performance – meaning airborne and impact sound levels are reduced. Components vary for different floor
constructions and are dependent on the specification, structure and heat output requirement. The use of an acoustic floor cassette can often reduce overall build costs.

The perfect partner for underfloor heating Underfloor heating is more efficient than radiators as it works at much lower flow temperatures. This makes it ideal for heat pumps, which provide optimum efficiency at low temperatures.
Get paid for staying warmIntended to revolutionise the way heat is generated and used in buildings and homes, there are various government grants and incentives available for both domestic and commercial heat pump installations. Nu-Heat’s Technical Account Managers can explain the options appropriate to a project and advise on the processes step-by-step.
The Domestic RHIThe RHI offers a real incentive to homeowners to install renewable technologies. Payments are made quarterly to homeowners over a period of 7 years based on estimates of a household’s annual heating consumption and the efficiency of their renewable technology (illustrated by the Seasonal Coefficient of Performance, or SCOP). Payments are in addition to any savings that have been made on heating bills.

3HOW IT WORKS
1. Extraction It takes an inexhaustible free supply of low-grade solar energy stored naturally in the ground.
2. Process Heat is absorbed from a cold space (i.e. the ground), processed and released for heating and domestic hot water. Even at temperatures as low as -20oC, a GSHP can supply significantly more energy as heat than it uses to extract it from the ground.
3. Input vs. Output To access this free environmental supply an energy input is required. In a well-insulated property every single kilowatt hour of electricity used to power the heat pump can provide up to three kilowatt hours of free energy. This ratio is known as the Coefficient of Performance (CoP), as shown in the diagram the CoP would be four, meaning the efficiency of the heat pump is 400% – compare this to a boiler at 90% efficiency and the advantage is clear.
4. Control Most systems are run using weather compensation control, allowing the heat pump to vary its operation based on the temperature requirements of the house in relation to the outside air temperature, time of day, etc.
5. Storage The heat pump also provides all your domestic hot water needs on demand and can be combined with Nu-Heat’s solar thermal panels for even higher energy savings and lower running costs.

Air source heat pumps
Nu-Heat’s air source heat pumps (ASHPs) are amongst the most advanced and efficient models available in the UK.
Air source heat pumps reliably supply significantly more energy as heat than they use to extract it from the air. This reduces the energy running costs of many properties. With no local CO
2 emissions, an
air source heat pump also helps to reduce impact on the environment.
Perfect for homes with limited outdoor spaceAir source heat pumps (ASHPs) are particularly suited to properties with limited outdoor space. The main ASHP unit will be fitted outside the property but the cylinder and associated parts must be installed indoors. In most circumstances an ASHP falls under permitted development within the planning regulations but must still comply with MCS020 and be positioned so as not to cause disturbance to neighbours.
Call our Technical Account Managers on 01404 540650 to find out more about siting your ASHP.

HOW IT WORKS
Air source heat pumps, sometimes known as air-to-water systems, work on a similar principle to ground source heat pumps but using warmth extracted from the air. They will operate in temperatures as low as -20oC.
Low temperature warmth from the air is absorbed by a fluid held in the ASHP. The fluid then passes through a
compressor where its temperature is increased before being made available for the heating and domestic hot water circuits of the house.
Air source heat pumps require no digging or drilling and few plumbing connections are used during installation, making them a cost effective option.

How does solar water heating technology work? Energy from the sun warms fluid in the solar panels. When the fluid reaches a useful temperature it is pumped to a coil in the bottom of a solar cylinder. The solar coil heats the cylinder water for domestic use. If the cylinder’s temperature sensor detects that the solar panel has not collected enough energy to heat the water to its pre-set temperature, the main heat source (i.e. a boiler) can top it up. The control panel can be set to optimise efficient use of the solar panel and ensure hot water is available at the times you need it.
Ideal for...• Pitched roofs
• Flat roofs
• Garden structures, so long as the distance between the solar panel and cylinder is practical.
Achieve optimum efficiency with Nu-Heat Know-How system design Nu-Heat designs and supplies a complete, ready-to-install package comprising the solar hot water cylinder, solar panels (often called collectors), and ancillary components.
Our specification is based on:
• Hot water demand
• Orientation and angle of the panels
• Amount of overshading from trees and surrounding buildings.
Using its own unique calculations package to specify the ideal combination of cylinder, solar panels and ancillary components, the Nu-Heat design and system sizing process has been developed in conjunction with European solar design software, TSol, as well as the government’s Standard Assessment Procedure (SAP) building regulations assessment criteria. Every Nu-Heat quote details the estimated annual proportion of hot water the solar collector will supply, based on the individual demand for the household.
Just solar or complete heating integration?Whether it’s the installation of a solar thermal system in isolation or a complete heating solution, Nu-Heat’s range of EnergyPro solar panels and cylinders fully integrate with our underfloor heating and heat pumps.

FAQs
We have put together answers to frequently asked questions concerning all aspects of our products and services. If you have any further questions, do give us a call.
UNDERFLOOR HEATING
Is underfloor heating cheaper to run and more efficient than radiators? Yes, UFH is up to 25% cheaper to run than radiators with a condensing boiler, and up to 40% cheaper to run with a heat pump. Source: EuRay 2005.
Is my property suitable for underfloor heating? All new UK properties will be suitable for UFH, as they meet strict guidelines on insulation and air tightness. Older properties can have UFH too, thanks to retrofit solutions that offer high heat outputs.
Can you use underfloor heating on upper floors? Yes, with over 60 floor constructions, including specialist acoustic floor options to reduce noise, we have every situation covered.
Is the make-up of my existing floor suitable for underfloor heating? We have over 60 different floor constructions to choose from, so there will always be a suitable match.
Is underfloor heating suitable for renovations? Yes, our low profile LoPro™10 and new LoPro™Max systems have been designed for renovations and retrofit projects.
Can underfloor heating be mixed and installed through old and new parts of a property? Yes.
Do I need a special boiler? No, underfloor heating works with gas, oil and LPG boilers as well as heat pumps.
Can I link underfloor heating directly off a radiator circuit? A LoPro™Max OneZone™ system can be linked directly from a radiator system. Full system solutions can work alongside any existing radiator system.
Will it work with my chosen floor covering? Underfloor heating works with most floor coverings. Your system designer will take the floor covering into account when specifying the amount of tube needed in the floor to heat the room effectively.
Is underfloor heating disruptive to install? The LoPro™ range can be installed over any existing floor with minimal height build-up and on any floor level. With over 60 systems to choose from, options range from installation over solid floors to solutions that can be fixed from above or below joists.
How long does the underfloor heating install take? This differs with each floor construction and we will advise on timescales at the quote stage.
What is the best way to use my underfloor heating system? This depends on the floor construction specified. Floating floors heat up more quickly than screed for example. Our new LoPro™Max floor construction can be used in exactly the same way as a radiator system, without a ‘setback’, because it heats up extremely quickly.
A traditional screed underfloor heating system takes time to heat up from cold so is best used with a ‘setback’ temperature. Your Nu-Heat Technical Account Manager and User Guide will cover this.
What happens if there is a fault or a leak? There are no joints in the underfloor heating tube laid in the floor and the tube we supply has a design life of over 50 years. So, unless the floor is badly damaged, it is extremely unlikely that there will ever be a leak.
Do you offer product guarantees? Each product we supply has its own guarantee, our tube has a 50 year third-party insurance up to £1m per claim. Our tube supplier is quality assured to ISO9001 and our underfloor heating tube is designed to the highest European industry standards; DIN16892 – general requirement and testing for cross linked polyethylene tubes and DIN4726 – oxygen permeability in heating tubes. Please contact us for more details.

HEAT PUMPS
Which is better an air source heat pump (ASHP) or ground source heat pump (GSHP)?Sufficient external space is the main criteria for the installation of a GSHP, which tends to rule out many urban properties. In terms of cost, the difference between a GSHP and an ASHP is comparative but the groundworks associated with a GSHP can be significant. Each project should be assessed individually.
Can Nu-Heat heat pumps be backed-up by fossil fuel boilers?Yes. This is called a bivalent system and needs specialist integrated system design, which we provide.
Can I heat swimming pools from a heat pump?Yes, heat pumps are often used to heat swimming pools.
SOLAR THERMAL
Where should the solar panels be positioned? Facing as near south as possible. On sloping roofs, flat roofs and garden structures, so long as the distance between the solar panel and cylinder is practical.
Do I need anything else?Yes, other than the solar panels you will need a hot water cylinder and ancillary components.
SERVICE
What is the order process and timescales? You can expect your bespoke quotation within 72 hours. Once the order is made, we aim to design the system to suit the individual project timescales.
