PARISH BUSINESS
Page 3
Dear Friends in Christ,
“Whenever we do something together, something good, something beautiful, everyone changes, all of us change in some way and this does us good.” This quote from Pope Francis reminds us that change can be good. Today as we find ourselves in the midst of change, we are called to work together to embrace it and to grow closer to God, the Church and our Parishes. The Eastern DuPage Deanery of the Joliet Diocese consists of 17 parishes that collaborate to provide the best discipleship, evangelization, and charity that we possibly can with our pooled resources. Our com-mittees include Priests, Deacons, and parishioners who come together with a mission to create a spirit of collabora-tion among our parishes to foster the building of the Kingdom of God. We are working to find creative ways to grow our ministries and to generate excitement within them. Some examples include marriage enrichment programs, li-turgical ministry fairs, combined youth groups and confirmation retreats, adult formation seminars, combined parish missions, penance services and many other exciting collaborative initiatives. As we share resources we are able to better serve you in the Parish Communities.
Our steering committee, composed of representatives from all the parishes, began in March of 2014 in response to Bishop Conlon’s request for greater collaboration at the deanery level. We began our meetings with a focus on multiple ministries and developed many great plans for collaboration. After completing our first full year of working together, we decided to reorganize as we prepared to execute our plans. Currently, our steering committee is broken down into six, individual groups including a liturgical group, communications, and four implementation groups orga-nized into local clusters with representatives from each parish. The first group includes Ascension, St. Pius, Sacred Heart, and Christ the King parishes. The second group includes St. Alexander, St. Joseph, Our Lady of Lebanon, and St. John the Apostle parishes. The third group includes St. Alexis, St. Philip, Holy Ghost, St. Peter, and St. Andrew Kim parishes. The fourth group includes St. Charles Borromeo, Visitation, Immaculate Conception, and Mary Queen of Heaven parishes. You are invited to have an active role in this meaningful journey to a collaborative deanery environ-ment. We know that it will be a long-term initiative and have faith that it will, eventually, be embraced by all.
This process of greater collaboration is God’s project. As Bishop Conlon stated in his article, Working Together, in the January 2014 issue of Christ is Our Hope magazine, “The Church is an instrument in God’s hands, designed by Him to do His work. Thus, we must pray constantly about this effort and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit.” Every-one is welcome to join us at these open meetings to help the Eastern DuPage Deanery to live this promise. You can get involved by contacting your deanery representative or by going to our website at www.easterndupagedeanery.org for meeting dates and times.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Very Reverend Thomas Paul, V.F. Dean of the Eastern DuPage Deanery of the Diocese of Joliet Pastor of Immaculate Conception Parish. Elmhurst
Visitation Little Samaritans Program
The Little Samaritans program accepts children walking to five years of age during the 8:15 and 10:00 A.M. Masses. The class includes a religious story from the Bible, a craft relating to the story of the day and, of course, playtime. There is no need to pre-register and you can bring your children to the classes as little or as often as you like.
Little Sams will not meet on Sunday, November 29,
for the Thanksgiving weekend.
Sessions are held in the Parish Center. If you have any questions, please call Donna Monaghan at 630-834-5383.

FAITH FORMATION
Faith Matt-ers
By Matt Pozen—Director of Parish Faith Formation
Vatican II: 50 Years Later
Page 5
In this bulletin series, we have been exploring the history of the 21 ecumenical councils recognized by the Catholic Church. The first eight met between 325 and 870 near the city of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, while the remaining 13 councils met in various cities in the areas of Italy, France, and Switzerland. These 13 western councils can be divided into a group of seven medieval councils (1123 to 1312), three renaissance councils (1414 to 1517), and three modern councils (1545 to 1965).
Last week we looked at the second of the modern councils, Vatican I, which met in Rome from 1869 to 1870. Pope Pius IX, the longest reigning pope in history (1848-1878), convoked this council in order to confront the modern world with what he saw as its chief errors. The most famous decree of Vatican I was its definition of papal infallibility. The day after the 533 bishops officially signed this decree, the forces of the Italian unification movement swept into Rome and declared it the capi-tal of the new nation of Italy. Pope Pius withdrew to the Vatican, the small area around St. Peter’s Basilica, and appealed to the sympathies of Catholics around the world by calling himself a “prisoner of the Vatican.” After Vatican I, many people won-dered whether there would ever be another ecumenical council, since the pope could define dogmas and condemn errors on his own.
When Pope Pius IX died in 1878, the cardinals decided to elect someone a bit more diplomatic, who could begin to move the Church out of a “siege mentality” and build bridges with the modern world. They elected Giaochino Pecci, the archbishop of Perugia in northern Italy, who took the name Leo XIII (1878-1903). He was a former papal ambassador to Belgium, where he honed his diplomatic skills. In the late 1800s, the Industrial Revolution that had started in Britain had made its way into Belgium. While there the young Pecci came face to face with a rapidly industrializing and urbanizing society, and all the pos-itives and negatives of capitalist enterprise. As Pope, Leo sought to adapt the Church to the new world brought on by the Industrial Revolution. In 1890 he issued his famous encyclical, Rerum Novarum (“On New Things”), in which he supported the right to private property (against the communists) but he warned of the dangers of capitalism and industrialization, and he showed the Church’s concern for the plight of the working class. This was hugely important for the future of the Church, because the writings of Karl Marx had accused religion of being “opium for the people”, promising people a heaven after death as a way of “drugging” them into accepting their current lot in life. Had Leo not written Rerum Novarum, it is possible the Church may have lost the allegiance of the working class and the poor.
The late 19th century saw rapid advances and innovative ideas in the fields of science, technology, politics, philosophy, and even theology. (Darwin’s theory of evolution and Einstein’s theory of relativity are just two examples from this era.) The universities in Germany, especially in Protestant areas, led the way in the areas of philosophy, theology, and biblical interpre-tation. Scholars at these universities sought to bring these fields out of the middle ages and clearly into the modern world. The Catholic Church, still seeing itself as under siege by the modern world, took a defensive attitude towards these new ideas, lumping them all under the general term “modernism”. Pope Leo XIII founded the Pontifical Biblical Commission (PBC) in 1901 in order to refute some of the new ways of interpreting the Bible.
In 1903, Pope Pius X succeeded Leo XIII, and he immediately set about solidifying the Church’s defenses against the modern world. In 1907 he issued an encyclical which clearly condemned what he saw as the errors of “modernism”. He set up “vigilance committees” in each diocese and seminary, to root out and prevent any of the new ideas from reaching the faithful. This paranoid overreaction to legitimate issues created a culture of fear within the Church, severely stifling Catholic scholarship and intellectual life.
From the late 1800s through the early 1900s, the state of Prussia in northern Germany was able to rapidly industrialize itself and build up a strong military. This unraveled the balance of power in Europe between Prussia, Britain, France, Austria-Hungary, Russia, and the Ottoman Empire in the Balkans. When the heir to the Austrian throne, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated in the Balkans in 1914, these nations quickly entered into alliances with each other and Europe descended into the Great War (later known as World War I). Pope Benedict XV (1914-1922) was elected on the eve of the Great War, and, try as he might, he was unable to prevent Europe from committing mass suicide. By the end of the war on November 11, 1918, the Allies (France, Britain, Russia, USA) had lost 22 million troops, while the Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, Ottoman Empire) lost 16 million! Meanwhile, the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia in 1917, led by Lenin and Trotsky, transformed Russia into the USSR, the first communist nation. The Versailles Treaty of 1919 inflicted heavy penal-ties and reparations on Germany. Pope Benedict was prophetic in his criticism of the harsh terms of this treaty, fearing that it would lead to more problems in the future.

Christ the King
Today is the Feast of Christ the King. It is the last Sun-day in the Liturgical Year of the Church. How fitting to end with this feast! Today, we rightfully enthrone Him as King of the Universe, King of our hearts!
“Who would dare refuse You honor, or the glory due Your name, O Lord? Since You alone are holy, all shall come and worship in Your Presence.” (Rev. 15:4)
Our Lord, our King, waits for your arrival in the Adora-tion Chapel. What do you bring to this King of Kings? Come on bended knee and “proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord.” (Phil. 2:11) Give Him adoration, praise and thanks-giving for all His blessings upon yourself and your family. “The reign of God is already in your midst.” (Lk 17:21)
Truly present in the Holy Eucharist, our King remains with us always until the end of time. How great is His mag-nanimity! He is willing to meet with any and all who come within His presence. “How good it is for us to be here!” (Mk 9:5)
Graciously, He gives us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity. Christ our King, wishes to reign through the om-nipotent love of His Sacred Heart in the hearts of all His people (words of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary) and we can ask this of Him through the Immaculate Heart of Mary so that “God may be all in all.” (1 Cor. 15:28) What a king-dom!
