Notes –Measurement

International System of Units

• International System of Units - a system of measurement based on multiples of ten

• abbreviated S.I.• the metric system• the world's most widely used

system of units

Length

• length - the distance between two points• meter - the unit of measure for length• the amount of space between two things• measured with a ruler or meterstick

Length

How long is the pencil?

Length

53 cm

How long is the eraser?

Length

5.8 cm

Liquid Volume

• volume - the amount of space a liquid takes up

• liter - the unit of measure for liquid volume

• meniscus - the convex or concave upper surface of a column of liquid

Liquid Volume

• measured with a graduated cylinder

• liquid forms a curvature called a meniscus (because of surface tension)

• always be at eye-level and read from the BOTTOM of the curve

Liquid Volume1.Always pay attention to which

marks are labeled and unlabeled.

2.Determine what the unlabeled marks represent.

3.Notice how this graduated cylinder has EVEN numbers marked.

4.You can infer that each unlabeled line is 0.2 mL.

Liquid Volume

6.6 mL

NOT 7.2 mL

You can infer that each unlabeled line is 0.2 mL.

Solid Volume

• measured with a ruler• area = length x width• volume = length x width x height• the unit is always CUBED

(centimeters)

Solid Volume

• measured with a ruler• area = length x width• volume = length x width x height• the unit is always CUBED

7 x 8 x 12 =672 cm3

(centimeters)

Mass

• mass - the amount of matter in an object• gram - the unit of measure for mass• measured with a triple beam balance

• each “beam” gives a reading and you have to add all 3 of them together

Mass

Mass

100 g 60 g+ 7.5 g167.5 g

Mass

• an electronic balance may also be used

Mass

• to find the mass of a substance in a container:

1. Place the EMPTY container on the balance.

2. Press the “tare” or “zero” button to get the mass to zero.

3. Fill the container with what you want to weigh, and record the mass.

Temperature

• temperature - the measure of the average energy of the motion of particles in a substance

• Celsius scale - the unit of measure for temperature where water freezes at 0º and boils at 100º.

Temperature

• measured with a thermometer• Pay attention to which lines are labeled

and which are not• Pay attention to if your reading is above

zero or below zero. Put a minus sign if it is below zero.

• Water freezes at 0°C and boils at 100 °C.

Distance in Space

• astronomical unit - the average distance from Earth to the sun (about 150 million km)

• Use astronomcal units (AU) to measure distances within our solar system (planet to planet)

Distance in Space

• light-year - the distance light travels in one year (about 10 trillion km)

• Use light-years to measure distances outside our solar system (galaxy to galaxy, star to star)
