Notes from the Executive & Artistic Director Almost all music lovers can describe a “Road to Damascus” moment when a performance they heard irrevocably changed the way that they looked upon the world – a sudden moment of conversion or transformation to a new way of thinking. In this 500th anniversary year of Luther’s Protestant Reformation, it seems fitting to reflect upon the idea that more than cold reason, music has always been a powerful tool of persuasion. It provides us with an expressive outlet for processing how we feel about the world as well as the ability to influence others. Truly great music often appeals to our intellect and our emotion in equal measures and can both motivate and reflect change within us. I will never forget the first time I heard the first chorus of the St. John Passion – its effect on me was beyond words and altered the course of my life. It was a moment of profound consolation that helped me understand that expressions of such complex beauty are, at the very least, evidence of our capacity to create incredible and noble things when we are so inclined. When we combine our capacity for reason with our great well of passion we can accomplish almost anything. In a political and cultural landscape that increasingly seems to sway people by appealing solely to pure emotions like fear, however, it seemed fitting to focus on the character of Orpheus for the calendar. Though this story is largely about the power of music to persuade and transform, it is also a tale of caution that warns us to keep our passion and reason in balance. Without this self-control and awareness of how easily our emotions can be swayed, we risk losing the things we value the most and often take for granted. If you are not yet a convert to the belief that well-constructed and inspired music can bring about positive change in many forms, then I invite you to explore EMV’s 2017 Vancouver Bach Festival and 2017-18 Main Season. I promise there is music here that will appeal to both your hearts and your minds.

All cultures have stories of the miraculous transformations – of individuals, groups, and even physical landscapes – that can be wrought by instrumental music and song. In recent decades, the early music movement has been at the center of a revolution in the practice of western classical music that values the rediscovery of little known repertoires as well as the exploration of period instruments and historical performance techniques. Artists and listeners alike have been forced to question deeply rooted assumptions about how music from the past was constructed and the types of interpretive choices that make music from any period speak most eloquently.
Meanwhile, multidisciplinary work in cognitive studies has shown how human consciousness is routinely shaped and extended by external symbol-systems, media and instruments of all kinds, including those used in making music. This series of concerts, pre-concert talks, public lectures and podcasts will explore the modalities of such mind/body-converting and world-changing musical experience in the persons of players and listeners across time, and in the wider history of societies and cultures, using live performances of classical music from the Middle Ages, Renaissance / Reformation and Baroque periods as a laboratory. The project is a joint production of Early Music Vancouver, Green College at the University of British Columbia, and the Early Modern Conversions Project based at McGill University (and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada).

Culture Days - The Path to PerformanceFriday September 29 from 4:00-5:00 pmChrist Church Cathedral (690 Burrard Street at Georgia)
As part of Culture Days, and in anticipation of EMV’s October performance of Monteverdi’s opera Orfeo at the Chan Centre, EMV will host an open rehearsal followed by a discussion with music director Stephen Stubbs on his experience with performing this pivotal work over the last 30 years.
Baroque Duets of Love and PassionFriday September 29 at 7:30 pm (pre-concert talk at 6:45, by Thomas Forrest Kelly and Stephen Stubbs)Christ Church Cathedral (690 Burrard Street at Georgia)
The Boston Early Music Festival Chamber EnsemblePaul O’Dette & Stephen Stubbs artistic co-directorswith vocal soloistsAmanda Forsythe & Emőke Baráth sopranosColin Balzer tenor, Christian Immler bass
Under the direction of the Boston Early Music Festival (BEMF) musical co-directors Paul O’Dette and Stephen Stubbs, four stunning vocalists – sopranos Amanda Forsythe and Emőke Baráth, tenor Colin Balzer, and baritone Christian Immler – and a continuo team of six brilliant instrumentalists will present a selection of Steffani’s gorgeous chamber duets, as well as instrumental gems from the Baroque. This concert coincides with the North American release of the first volume of BEMF’s Steffani Chamber Duets CD series on the CPO label, which features the same BEMF vocalists and instrumentalists. Five of the nine duets performed on this programme have never been commercially recorded, so even connoisseurs in the audience will likely be hearing most of them for the first time.

For a little less than a century, the Christian world had its eyes set on Avignon. The wealth, splendour and power of the French popes attracted kings, princes and the greatest artists of the century. Diabolus in Musica’s programme is a journey among the great manuscripts born in the Avignon sphere and includes many works that have not been sung since the 14th Century.
Monteverdi’s Orfeo Sunday October 29 at 3:00 pm (pre-concert talk at 2:15, by Ian Fenlon and Stephen Stubbs)Chan Centre for the Performing Arts at UBC
Stephen Stubbs, music directorPacific MusicWorks & Dark Horse Consort Colin Balzer tenor as Orfeo
Monteverdi’s Orfeo is the first unqualified masterpiece in operatic history. Full of dramatic word painting, narrative urgency, rich orchestration of exotic instruments as well as exquisite writing for vocal ensemble, it feels as fresh and full of relevance as it must have in the early 17th Century. Monteverdi specialist and grammytm winner Stephen Stubbs leads his own ensemble, Pacific MusicWorks, in a concert version featuring Vancouver’s Colin Balzer in the title role.

Toronto’s Eybler Quartet brings to life the relatively obscure music of Vanhal and Asplmayr, early apostles of this genre, and traces a line to the treasured works of Haydn and Beethoven that became the backbone of the string quartet repertoire for generations to come.

Janusz Olejniczak Plays Chopin Friday February 2 at 7:30 pm | Christ Church CathedralSaturday February 3 at 7:30 pm | Christ Church Cathedral
Janusz Olejniczak 19th-century piano & modern Steinway
The keyboard music of the early Romantics such as Chopin and Schumann – and even of still later composers – was written for pianos substantially different from the ubiquitous modern Steinway. This two-concert collaboration with the Vancouver Chopin Society is an exploration of how the use of period instruments can have a dramatic effect on an artist’s interpretive choices. Award-winning Polish pianist Janusz Olejniczak will play two recitals with different programmes. In each concert, he will play the first half on a 19th-century fortepiano and the second half on a modern Steinway.

Suzie LeBlanc sopranoKiya Tabassian setar & shourangiz, leaderMichel Angers baroque guitar & theorbo, Pierre-Yves Martel viola da gambaDavid Greenberg baroque violin, Patrick Graham percussion
For this programme, Ensemble Constantinople has invited Canadian treasure, soprano Suzie LeBlanc, to revisit and explore new avenues and Italian composers often unknown to the general public, yet among the finest in the second half of the 16th and early 17th century: Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643), Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger (1580-1651), and Marco Uccellini (1603-1680). The programme also includes works by renaissance madrigal composer Barbara Strozzi, a worthy heiress of Monteverdi, who created a secular vocal repertoire that intoxicates the senses.

A Telemann Celebration – Ensemble La RêveuseFriday March 23 at 7:30 pm | Christ Church Cathedral
Serge Saitta traverso, Stéphan Dudermel violin, Florence Bolton viola da gamba, Benjamin Perrot theorbo, Carsten Lohff harpsichord
A major figure of 18th century musical Europe, Telemann enjoyed in his time more fame and renown than even the great J.S. Bach. This great master of instrumental music, open to French and Italian influences as well as the new gallant style that flourished in Germany, succeeded, especially in his chamber music, in creating a charming synthesis of European styles at the crossroads between Baroque and Classicism.

Ovid: Myth and Music Tenor Charles Daniels in Recital Saturday April 28 at 7:30 pm | Christ Church Cathedral
Charles Daniels tenorAlexander Weimann music director with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra Chamber Players
Designed by Peter Phillips to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War in 1918, a complete Mass provides the framework, put together from war-like sources. These come either from the tradition of the Armed Man (L’homme armé), or are based on a chanson actually describing a battle (La batalla).
The great English tenor Charles Daniels joins forces with members of the Pacific Baroque Orchestra and conductor Alexander Weimann for a programme of music inspired by myths from Ovid’s Metamorphosis.
