The Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) is a nonprofit leader in educating, developing, promoting and inspiring technology transfer practitioners to make the world a better place

through the commercialization of academic research.

AUTM’s global community of 3,200 members represent businesses and government organizations, and more than 350 universities,

research institutions and teaching hospitals.

What is the Value of a TT Association?

Convening

• Regular gathering of colleagues from your country builds friendships, networks, and shared experiences

• Encourages more free flow of employees

• Time out of office can be very productive

• Tech transfer is NOT a competition because you don’t share the same ideas

Teaching/Learning

• Sharing best practices helps bring all universities forward more quickly

• Active participation in teaching by TTO employees provides leadership opportunities

• You will learn from people with a shared policy and cultural environment

– There is only one Silicon Valley

Access

• A national TTO association provides a single entry point for industry to discover what discoveries are across the country

• Build collaborations and gain feedback from industry

• Creates consistency of practice

A National TT Culture

• Technology transfer is only successful when it creates harmony between policy, practitioners, and national culture

• A common national framework can only be achieved through a TT Association who can advocate on behalf of all research institutions

AUTM Through the Years

• 1974—Society for University Patent Administrators – <25 universities – Focused on managing patent portfolios – Over next seven years helped to advocate for

national TT policy

• 1983– name change to AUTM – Represented the shift to managing the IP portfolios

not just administering it – Focused heavily on the transfer of life sciences

ideas to pharma companies and the emerging biotech industry

My AUTM Story

• 1996– my entry to AUTM – Excellent education in the basics of technology

transfer – My first meeting had 300 people – Good networking – Could get my questions answered

• 1999—startups begin to be discussed • 2003—licensing begins to be more

sophisticated and deals more complex

• 2004—Based on what I learned, I leave TTO to work at a startup

• 2010—Return to university TTO – Begin to have more specific industry networking – Regional meetings have become even more

important – Many more educational opportunities

• 2012—Stronger focus on AUTM advocacy in DC • 2014—Startups explode • 2017—Year-long discussion on redefining TT

• Local and regional economic development

• Incubator management

• Entrepreneurial competitions and education

• Managing interactions with startups

• Collaborative ventures with corporations

• Recruiting and retaining faculty and partners

• Connecting with investors

Today the association’s approximately 3,200 members represent 65 countries. The most recent Annual Meeting drew 1,973 attendees.
