CFSF thanks community for support
The Chenango Forks Scholarship Foundation would like to thank the Chenango Forks community for its support during our annual Phone-A-Th on.
Th e generosity of our community residents has again made it possible for us to provide scholarships for this year’s class of graduating seniors. Last year’s graduating seniors have already put their scholarships to good use, assisting with tuition payments, buying books and supplies, transportation to and from classes, and many other expenses associated with college.
Donations are continuing to come in and we hope to reach or exceed last year’s total of $10,505. Every dollar donated goes to the scholarship fund and we could not do it without you and the ongoing and generous support you have given in facilitating the continuing education of our students. Th ank you from the bottom of our hearts!

PTA at the Forks
The Chenango Forks PTA is grateful to all the volunteers who gave their time and energy to the PTA events and initiatives this school year. Th ank you to our PARP
committee, Fall Festival volunteers, Scholastic Book Fair workers, fundraiser helpers and contributors. Our volunteers are an integral and irreplaceable part of the PTA’s role and eff orts in our school. We thank you!
As the school year comes to a close, we would like to refl ect on the many wonderful programs and events the PTA sponsored and supported. Due to the diffi cult fi nancial times, district funding for fi eld trips was decreased signifi cantly this year. Fortunately, the PTA was able to fund a variety of educational fi eld trips for our students, including the fourth-grade trip to the Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown, the kindergarten trip to Ross Park Zoo, the seventh-grade trip to the Cider Mill Playhouse and the fi fth-grade trip to the Lackawanna Coal Mines. Other programs funded by the PTA include PARP, Fall Festival, scholarships for high school seniors, end of the year honors assembly, After-Prom
Party entertainment, teacher appreciation breakfast, and many more educational activities.
Th ere are many opportunities to become involved as a volunteer in the upcoming school year. If you are interested in assisting with any of our programs or fundraising endeavors, please contact any of the current PTA offi cers listed below. We would welcome any time or support that you could off er. We wish everyone a happy, healthy and safe summer and look forward to meeting many new members in the fall.

3June 2012 Chenango Forks ElementaryChenango Forks ElementaryPrincipal’s messageCFE ... A year in review
One of the fi rst things teachers learn at college is to be refl ective. It’s one of the practices I have valued most and brought with me throughout my years
as a teacher and now as an administrator. My personal belief is that in all the chaos of testing, end-of-year activities, and starting to think about next year, it’s important to refl ect on all the accomplishments we had this year at CFE. While I’m sure I’ll only scratch the surface in this article, it’s a wonderful opportunity to celebrate our successes and to start to think about how we want to better ourselves in the years to come. In September, 48 teachers and 16 paraprofessionals welcomed 746 students into our new combined building. Teachers worked in collaborative groups to create and align the PK-5 science and social studies curriculum to the NYS standards with the new NYS common core standards for English Language Arts embedded. By the end of this month, they will also have an alignment of the new common core math standards for the 2012-2013 school year. By the end of this month, four recognition assemblies will have been held, awarding our third- through fi fth- grade students for curricular and athletic accomplishments. Additionally, more than 20 morning
programs have been held, providing learning and reward opportunities for our pre-k through second-grade students to build strong character. More than 1,200 state test booklets have been completed, compiled, scored and sent back to the state by our CFE teachers and students. Students have or will have attended educational fi eld trips, with the help of the PTA and district funds, that included local grocery stores, the Oxford Veterans Home, Th e Cider Mill Playhouse, Chenango Valley State Park, Cooperstown, the Lackawanna Coal Mines, a local cemetery and more.We have aligned the RtI (Response to Intervention) processes and worked with representatives to create collaborative plans for student success and learning through our status as a SINI school. Four IPads were distributed to each classroom and every teacher was given a minimum of nine hours of professional development in their basic use, curriculum ideas, and tools for diff erentiating learning for all students.
Th is is just a piece of what we’ve pulled together to do, and there is much to come this summer and early in the 2012-2013 school year. Here are a few things to whet your appetite and hopefully encourage you to get involved in the school next year.
Poetry recital a success
Wow, do we have a school full of second -rade poets. Every year our second-graders learn about poets and the art of writing poetry. Th ey’re exposed to many
styles of poetry such as couplets, call and response, acrostic, rhyming, and shape poems, to name a few.
One of their most exciting experiences with poetry was having their very own Poetry Recitation. Each child chose a published poem they loved. In April they recited their poems from memory in front of our three judges: CFE Principal Knapp, Associate Superintendent Kathleen Dixon, and AIS/Reading Teacher Lorrie Hulbert.
Students were judged on pacing, clarity, poise and expression. Th e top scoring boy and girl from each class were chosen by the judges as well as the overall top boy and girl from the entire grade level.
The winners from Brittany Harris’ class a r e D y l a n Furman and Jordan LaVergne. Tierney Daniels, Sophia Episale, and Noah Cetton are the three winners from Heather Marvin’s class due to a tie. Jessica McBreen’s winners were Elana Brink and Bennett Howell. Rachel Williams and Caden Olmstead are the poets from Stephanie Zajac’s class. Th e overall top poets in second grade are Tierra Reh and Daniel Leighton, both from Mary Collins’ class. Both Tierra and Danny went on to participate in the county-wide recitation with each receiving a medal and a book for their hard work. All of the second-graders made their parents and teachers very proud.
-Mary Collins, second-grade teacher
Tierra Reh and Danny Leighton were the overall winners.

June 20124 Chenango Forks ElementaryChenango Forks ElementaryPerfectly penguin!Sponsored by the PTA
Thanks to the PTA, International Penguin Day was
once again a memorable event for our students. Dressed in black and white, and with a willingness to waddle, Chenango Forks Elementary pupils came prepared to celebrate and participate in this annual event.
Students were entertained at a special morning program that included Tux, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Hockey mascot. Tux assisted as stories were read by Kathleen Dixon, associate superintendent, and COOL 100’s radio personality, Amy Love. Also performing at our morning program was our own Penguin Chorus, under the direction of Stephanie Zajac, singing “We Are the Birds.”
Other perks of the day included penguin bookmarks, coloring sheets, physical education penguin activities, a seafood themed lunch, as well as penguin footprints wandering in the main hallway. Students enjoyed tracking the penguin footprints from the front door out to the playground. Th ird-grade students from Rachel Bender’s class read penguin stories to prekindergarten through second-grade classes during the day.
Th e students attended a special assembly in the afternoon. Aggie Hartigan, from the Binghamton Zoo at Ross Park, presented Ronde, a prominent penguin member at the zoo. Hartigan shared information and answered questions from the students. Th is provided a chance for our pupils to get a close-up look at the particular features of a penguin.
Th ank you again to the PTA for providing a perfectly penguin day for our students. Happy Waddling.

Spring concert a hit
Spring sprung into Chenango Forks Elementary School as the fi fth-grade music program rocked the house during its annual spring concert on May 2.
Th e concert gave CF Elementary chorus and band “seniors” the chance to shine as performers, whether in large groups, smaller combos, or as soloists. Drew Allport and Cindi Ferranti wish to thank the CF parents for their continued involvement and support.
-Drew Allport, fi fth-grade band director
Our Olweus team will be planning the kickoff of our anti- bullying curriculum this summer, which will be presented to students and staff in the fall.Collaborative professional development days embedded in the school year to allow teachers more instructional time in their classrooms.
So, as I refl ect on the school year, I hope you also take the time to refl ect. If there are areas where you saw great accomplishments in your child’s classroom, take a moment to share them with the classroom teacher before they leave for the summer. Have a wonderful, safe summer.

Students learn about lifestyle diseases
Being healthy can be as simple as making smart lifestyle choices. Eighth-graders in Karen Shapiro’s fi rst-period health class
learned this while studying lifestyle diseases.
Students learned how poor lifestyle choices can increase the risk of certain diseases such as heart and liver diseases, skin and lung cancers, diabetes and hypertension. Th ey discovered that these diseases may be prevented by reducing or eliminating certain bad habits such as smoking, alcohol consumption and over exposure to the sun. Th ey also learned that by exercising and eating right, these diseases can be further prevented.
After researching and learning what risks increase these diseases and what healthy lifestyle choices decrease them, the students created informational brochures. Th e brochures were designed and written to help educate others. Th ey are on display in front of the attendance offi ce and are free for anyone to take and read. Our hope is that everyone will become more aware of the importance of making good lifestyle choices.
-Karen Shapiro, eighth-grade health teacher
Karen Shapiro’s class holds the display stand with the brochures they wrote and designed.

Students learn to catch a culprit
We see it on television shows and hear about it in real courtroom trials. DNA. What is it and how is it used to identify a person? Students in AP Biology class learned all about DNA as they executed a technique called DNA Fingerprinting.
Often used in crime investigations, this technique can assist police and confi rm paternity tests by matching up various DNA sequences. Th e equipment used was provided by teachers at the Cornell Institute of Biology.
DNA samples were taken from a mother, baby and two possible fathers. Certain fragments of the DNA were cut with the use of restriction enzymes. Th e fragments were then pulled through a gel using an electric fi eld. Larger size fragments could be seen closer to the starting point whereas smaller fragments were able to travel further down the gel. Th e father was determined if a band was shared with the baby.
Students were able to gain college-level lab experience while still attending high school. Th ese skills provide experience for the future and students learned how science can tie into the real world. Emily Feldpausch, left, and Mariya
Pecheny work on a DNA sample.

Science Olympiad students compete
In March, members the middle school Science Olympiad team put their science skills to the test as they competed against other local teams at Maine-Endwell Middle School
during the local competition.
Our team placed fourth overall out of six teams. Many students earned individual medals in diff erent events, including four fi rst place, three second place and two third place medals. Students who won medals were Seamus Houlihan, Kevin Vogel, Elliott McRoberts, Elena Shelapak, Melissa Boeker, Julia Rhodes, Aidan Houlihan, Victoria Godden, and Kelly Parmeter.
Events are based on many concepts of STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) with some of the events requiring devices
to be built and brought to the competition while others events require problem-solving skills and knowledge of a cer ta in subject area. Congratulations to our Science Olympiad competitors!
