2013 Back to School Edition | Welcome Back | 5
Letter from the President
On behalf of the faculty, staff, students and the local community, I want to welcome you to Northern Illinois University!
Whether you are a new student, moving to campus for the first time, or a returning student, I am sure many of you are experiencing a wide range of emotions. The start of a new school year brings excitement, anxiety and perhaps a bit of confusion. I know the feeling, because like many of you, I am also a newcomer to campus.
My first day as president of Northern Illinois University was July 1 and, for me, every day since then has been Orientation Day. So, I can appreciate the sense of information overload that you may be experiencing at the moment.
My advice to you is to take a deep breath and relax. If nothing else, just remember that all of us at NIU are dedicated to helping you succeed. That goal is at the heart of our efforts to become the most student-centered public research university in the Midwest.
What does that mean for you? It is our pledge that we are working to ensure that every experience you have at NIU prepares you to succeed in the world that awaits you after you after graduation.
As a member of the Huskie Family, I encourage you to get involved in both our campus and our local community. You can become a research rookie, join one of our 200 student clubs and organizations, cheer on our Huskie athletics teams to victory or engage in volunteer work in the community. These experiences will help you to meet new friends while you transform your education into something extraordinary.
NIU and the cities of DeKalb and Sycamore are friendly and caring communities. Together we are a “communiversity” of dedicated and knowledgeable faculty, staff, alumni and friends committed to assist you during your first days and throughout your educational journey.
At Northern Illinois University, we live by our mantra…Learning today, leading tomorrow. We welcome you to our community today as learners, knowing that in just a few short years at graduation, you will no doubt marvel at how your NIU experience has transformed your life.

Residential Renaissance enhances student life
It’s All Happening Here!
New president Douglas Baker better make sure he is in ribbon-cutting shape. That’s because fall 2013 will mark the grand opening of three key components of Northern Illinois University’s “New Northern Lifestyle” and Vision 2020 Initiatives: renovated Gilbert Hall and Grant North D Tower residence halls and the brand new Outdoor recreation Sports Complex.
Gilbert Hall--which has not been used to house students since 1995—has been reborn with traditional charm
and modern amenities that students desire. The residence hall is located on the east side of campus, making it attractive for the upper classmen it is intended to serve. The building is convenient to visual and performing arts, engineering and business classes and features wireless internet in all rooms and lounges, a café that serves Starbucks Coffee, an in-hall fitness facility, all-you-care-to-eat dining center, a large outdoor patio and loft bedding.
Grant D Tower also opens after an extensive renovation. Grant is located on the northwestern edge of campus and consists of four 12-story towers. This residence hall complex is very close to sports fields and tennis courts and features many double rooms as well as single rooms. The tower features state-of-the-art amenities, such as individualized temperature controls, modular furniture and advanced security measures. Personalized proximity cards are issued requiring students to identify themselves in elevators and at their room, providing greater security. Grant C Tower was similarly remodeled and re-opened in 2011.

NIU’s new outdoor recreation facility, north of the Convocation Center, will feature lighted multi-use sports fields where soccer, rugby, flag football, lacrosse, baseball, softball and Ultimate Frisbee can be played, allowing the university to host more competitions for sport clubs as well as large-scale weekend tournaments. It also allows more flexibility in scheduling more intramural sports and better accommodation of rain-outs.
The three facility openings are not the only pieces of NIU’s “residential renaissance.” Last August, NIU opened a new undergraduate residence hall for the first time in more than 40 years.
New Hall, as the 1,000 bed complex is known, is comprised of two residential buildings with identical structures featuring “cluster-style” living arrangements, each housing 12 students. Privacy is enhanced via 12 single bedrooms, six shared bathrooms with micro-refrigerators and a common space that includes a furnished study area, living area and kitchenette as well as a washer and dryer all within the cluster.
The two residential buildings are connected by a community center that features an “all-you-care-to-eat” food court-style dining facility, offering a variety of food
options, a social lounge with a gaming area and a fitness center equipped with modern workout equipment and meeting spaces.Outdoor amenities include a sand volleyball court, basketball half-court and bean bag courts grouped together with picnic tables. Students also enjoy patios, benches, green spaces and 190 spaces for bicycle parking adjacent to each of the residential buildings. This “renaissance” of the last few years marks the first time in nearly half a century that the campus landscape has seen such dramatic change. Not since the 1960s — a decade that saw the opening of over 20 buildings to accommodate NIU’s rapidly increasing enrollment — has the campus experienced so much growth.

DeKalb is a great college town with lots to offer all age groups. It offers everything from shopping, dining and activities to theatre, music, pubs and nightlife.
Known for being home to Northern Illinois University, DeKalb has a gem in the NIU Convocation Center, which hosts events from Dog and Farm Shows to national music acts such as rascal Flatts, Miranda Lambert and Kid Kudi. The events calendar is available on www.niuconvo.com or 815-752-6800.
NIU is also known for its sports. With two consecutive MAC Championships and a trip to the Orange Bowl last year, this has become the most popular
event in town. NIU home football games have become a must for anyone in the DeKalb County area. Fans can start tailgating 3 hours before kickoff. Many of the area restaurant and bars have specials on game days to enjoy as well. For this year’s schedule visit www.niuhuskies.com.
While on the NIU campus, take a quiet stroll along the lagoon and visit Altgeld Hall, known as the “Castle on the Hill” and the beautiful sculptures that surround it. Inside Altgeld Hall are the latest exhibits at the NIU Art Museum, including paintings, sculptures, and photographs.
A short distance from campus (#7 Huskie Line) is downtown DeKalb, complete with historic landmarks, shopping and dining. The egyptian Theatre, a restored 1930s movie palace is one of the best examples of Egyptian/Art Deco architecture in the country and was named one of the 150 places you must see in Illinois. The theatre has a wide variety of shows and entertainment. It has shown classic movies such as The Godfather, Vertigo, and Casablanca. It also shows cult classics such as the rocky Horror Picture Show complete with audience participation. While having national music and comedians such as Aaron Carter, John Waite, and ron White, they also turn the theatre into a 6 level haunted house during the week of Halloween. Want the real thing? The egyptian has been well known for being haunted. They have haunted tours throughout the year. You will be split up into groups to investigate the ghosts and sightings to see if you can find your own evidence and possibly experience paranormal events! The tour and investigation

into the unknown is guided by the Illinois Ghost Hunters, a very well known and highly respected paranormal investigation team with many years of experience. For more information and schedule of events for the egyptian Theatre visit them at egyptiantheatre.org.
Across the street from the egyptian Theatre is Van Buer Plaza, named after former DeKalb Mayor Frank Van Buer. In this plaza many events are held such as the DeKalb Farmers Market on Thursdays from 1pm-6pm from June until September, live music luncheons, and this year DeKalb Corn Fest will make its return to the downtown area on Aug. 30-Sept.1. The soundstage area will be located in Van Buer Plaza and is open to all ages.
From Van Buer Plaza, continue up to First Street to Memorial Park located at the corner of Lincoln Hwy. and First St. Here you can admire the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Clock, a World War I memorial dedicated in honor of all veterans from DeKalb. The park is also home to an historic World War I tank named “Donna”. Have a seat on one of the benches and gaze at the mural that was a collaboration of many artists and community residents who came together to tell the story of DeKalb’s history and its founding fathers. There are 3 additional murals located in the downtown area. One is on top of eduardo’s Mexican restaurant, located at the corner of 2nd and Lincoln Hwy., the second is just across the street on the back side of the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Building on Lincoln Hwy. The third is at the corner of Lincoln Hwy and 7th St.
While exploring the downtown, check out the abundance in dining options. From an Irish pub to a Mediterranean and tapas restaurant to Thai cuisine, you will find it in downtown DeKalb. There is a complete listing of all the area restaurants in the back of this publication to find what you are craving.
If music is what you like, check out some of the local downtown nightlife. Otto’s has both national and local acts and The House Cafe showcases new and local talent. Both locations have open mic night. Otto’s is 21 and older where The House Cafe is open to all ages. For more information on the downtown area visit www.renewdekalb.com
A few blocks from downtown DeKalb is another historic landmark, the ellwood House. This grand Victorian mansion is among the most notable historic gems. Built by barbed wire manufacturer Isaac L. Ellwood in 1879, its crystal chandeliers sparkle, gilt mirrors shine and workwork gleams. The home is open for tours and special events throughout the year.
If shopping is what you are looking for DeKalb has a large variety. Check out the chic vintage stores in the downtown area. For national chains head out to Sycamore Rd. where you can find TJ Maxx, Ross, Target, Kohls, Ulta, MC Sporting Goods, Best Buy, Pier 1 Imports, Barnes & Noble, Wal-Mart and much more.
In addition to your fitness center on campus, come enjoy some outdoor activities offered in and around DeKalb. DeKalb Park District has numerous bike and running trails, two golf courses, tennis courts, and an acquatic center. 20 minutes outside of town is Shabbona Lake. It is a state park with over 1,550 acres of prairie and a 318.8 acre man-made lake. It is one of the premier muskie fishing destinations in Illinois. Visitors can fish, hike, rent boats, hunt, snowboard and cross-country ski. There is also a campground and cabins available for overnight stays. If you are feeling even more adventurous, you could try Chicagoland Skydiving Center, just 15 minutes from DeKalb in Rochelle, IL. It offers a 14,000 tandem jump and is open 7 days a week and has a restaurant, bar, store as well as a full service rV park and free tent camping.
