It’s not work, it’s life
It’s not work, it’s life
1.3 million staff, working in more than 90 occupations and professions
£100 billion budget
1.5 million people use the NHS every 36 hours
Some BIG numbers…
It’s not work, it’s life
The quality of leadership can make the single biggest difference as to whether organisations
are high performing or not.
“there is good evidence that
better managed healthcare
produces better results for
patients” …and… “the key to
improvement is better
management of resources.”
“good financial management
arrangements are essential if
NHS bodies are to meet their
objectives and deliver
effective healthcare to
patients.”
It’s not work, it’s life
What can we do to reduce the 22,000 deaths every year because of alcohol misuse?
Or cut back on alcohol-relatedadmissions to A&E?
It’s not work, it’s life
“More managers than beds?”
It’s not work, it’s life
The scheme exists to grow highly skilled managers who have the potential to go on to achieve senior leadership positions to improve health and healthcare.

With 1.3 million employees and 1.5 million patients travelling to and from NHS facilities every day, it’s no wonder that 5% of the UK’s transportation related carbon emissions are attributable to the organisation.
So how can we protect the health of our nation, without damaging the health of our planet?
