and Digital Competency
Framework with the Challenge
Advisors from Central South
Consortium and I am pleased to
tell you standards are good and
excellent.
The pupils have elected their
new School, Eco School and Criw
Cymraeg councillors and they
have been doing an unbelievable
job and I am sure you have
received a number of their
letters informing you of their
plans.
We have also had home to
school teacher meetings,
Harvest assemblies and so much
more I hope you enjoy reading
this newsletter and have an
amazing half term.
Mrs Haggett x
The Percentage of parents who
attended home-school meetings
with teachers was 68%
If you missed out and would like a
meeting please see your child’s
teacher.
As part of our attendance monitoring, we will now be issuing FPN
(Fixed Penalty Notices) warnings for children with 10 or more
unauthorised absences during a half term.
This is part of our drive to improve attendance in Craig Yr Hesg
Primary School.
What does this mean to you and how does it work?
If your child is off school for 10 days or more without a valid reason
or has 10 late marks after the register closes at 9:30am (during a
half term), the school will refer to the Attendance and Wellbeing
Service.
You will then be given a 3 week monitoring period to improve your
child’s attendance, if you fail to do so, you will be issued with an
Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN). If your child’s attendance improves you
are withdrawn from the monitoring process. Please note you can be
referred as many times as necessary during a school year!
School Lunch £2.50 per day or
£12.50 a week. This MUST be on
a Monday or Friday to the office.
This is an RCT policy any late
payments will be chased up by
the Local Authority. A text
message reminder will be sent.
A huge thank you to all of the
Friends of Craig Yr Hesg and all
the volunteers for their hard
work this term.

During the autumn term, we have been working extremely hard on our topic: ‘Espana’. We
have had so much fun with this topic so far and are thoroughly enjoying learning Spanish with
Pontypridd High School. We have looked at maps of Spain and Wales and made comparisons.
We have also looked at the difference between the temperatures and rainfall in Spain
compared to Wales.
We have even planned a holiday to Spain with a given budget
(I wonder if Mrs Haggett will let us go?)
Visit our class page on the school website by scanning this QR code!
In literacy, we have explored travel
brochures and script writing for weather reports. We have
created our own travel brochures to persuade people to go
to Spain (not that we need much persuading). We have loved
finding out lots of facts about Spain! We have also created
our own weather reports on Spain after watching and
evaluating how the professionals do it!
In Mathematics, we have enjoyed looking at many
different types of problems. This half term we have been
using our skills of perimeter to help Anthony design new
bins for our classroom! We have also been inputting data
into HWB and creating graphs. In Science, we have used
our maths skills to work on Air Resistance and which we
used to design our own helicopters! (Phew!)
We have had a fabulous, amazing and exciting start to
Autumn term and cannot wait to see what is in store for us next half term!
Class Teifi you are the BEST!
Class Cynon- Miss Wookey and Jackie
It’s been a wonderful half term in reception and we have been loving our topic “Marvellous
creations and celebrations”. We have been learning all about Harvest and the story of the
Little Red Hen. We found out that her friends were not being very kind to her so we sorted
pictures of what being a good friend looks like and this has transpired in to our classroom;
where we are all kind friends.
We also received a video ‘Skype’ call from the Little Red Hen asking us to help her harvest
vegetables! We used our amazing counting skills to count all the things we had harvested.
The Little Red Hen was soon calling us again as she needed our help to structure her
instructions to make bread! We worked so hard working collaboratively to put the
instructions in the correct order and then we followed them to make our own bread to make
sure they were right.
Finally we started to learn about celebrations in different cultures and acted out the story
of Rama and Sita for Diwali. Everyone has settled in Reception really well and we are looking
forward to continuing our learning next half term.
Ardderchog Cynon!
Dosbarth Tywi
This half term we have been enjoying our topic “Globe Trotters” we have been finding out
about the weather and climates all around the world. Using atlases, we have enjoyed learning
about the different continents, climates and oceans. At the start of the topic we used our
pupil voice to lead our learning. A strong consensus from the class was to find out about the
Rugby World cup. We started this by locating on a world map all the countries taking part.
After this we decided to calculate the distance each team had to travel to get to Japan.
In P.E the class have been working hard to compose and perform their own version of the
Famous Haka
.
We have also enjoyed this half term learning about space as part of this topic. We
have looked closely at the sun, we have created databases to learn more about the different
planets in our solar system and over half term we are designing and making moon buggies we
would like to create to send to the moon to help us learn more about the planet.
This last week we have been looking closely at Typoon Hagibis, children have enjoyed
finding out about what it was like to live through this natural disaster. We looked closely
about the geographical causes of this storm forming and we used what we learnt to write a
first person account of the life of the people in Japan who lived through this natural
disaster.
We have had a very bust half term and I am looking forward to continuing with this
topic next half term. Well done Dosbarth Twyi. Have a brilliant half term, and enjoy a well
deserved break.

Wow! What an incredible first half term we’ve had in Year 3 / 4!
During the first few weeks in September, we worked collaboratively to establish our groups
and classrooms, as we got to know more about each other and our teacher. We decided upon
our class rules, as well as elected School/Eco Council members, and found roles and
responsibilities for every member of our class.
In Literacy we have been working on developing our oracy and writing skills. We started by
writing a piece all about ourselves, then we explored directions, and have ended the half
term enjoying shape poetry. Our class have become great detectives spotting onomatopoeia,
alliteration, time connectives and bossy verbs! During Maths we have explored the four rules
of number, measurements of length, money and temperature. As a class we have focussed on
consolidating and developing our times table knowledge.
Our afternoons have been just as fun and busy as our mornings. We had a mysterious
suitcase left in our class, we emailed the owner who said they had come to Wales from Spain
to find out more about Cardiff. So, naturally, we got busy and researched all about Cardiff
to make a fact sheet for them…I wonder what they will be able to tell us about Spain?!?
During PE we have perfected Jac Y Do, and compared it to a traditional Spanish Flamenco
dance. In Welsh we have focused upon the weather, and what activities we can do in each.
Our Welsh skills have astounded Miss Lewis so much that she’s inviting her friend Marc
Griffiths in to do a radio show where we can read out our Welsh poems! In our Science
sessions, we’ve perfected the perfect prediction, and have conducted our first full
investigation into air resistance and the size of helicopter blades. Finally, in RE we have
focused upon different celebrations, which ended with a fantastic performance in our
Harvest assembly.
Llongyfarchiadau Blwyddyn 3 a 4! You have been outstanding this half term and made Miss
Lewis exceptionally proud!! A big thank you to everyone…children, parents, families, school
volunteers and staff, who have made this half term so enjoyable. Miss Lewis is looking
forward to seeing you all back in November!
