Osprey rOadshOwby Mrs Grunwald
The Wildlife Enrichment group, were fortunate to have recently hosted a very
interesting presentation delivered by Michelle and Ken from the Osprey Roadshow, based at Lyndon. We were given an informative and often surprising insight into the lives of the Rutland Ospreys. Our students asked very searching questions and impressed our visitors
with their enthusiasm. We are delighted to have been featured in the report Ken has written on the Rutland Ospreys website: “To see local youngsters like these showing such interest and knowledge is very encouraging for all of us involved in the Project. We need them, the Ospreys need them, to help us educate the rest of the population. They are the perfect ambassadors. So thank you, Uppingham CC, for allowing us to come and see you today.”
The FOur winds FesTivalby Mrs Turner
Students from Years 7 – 10 took part in ‘The Way the Winds Blow’ by Chris
Baldwin - a spectacular new production written especially for the Four Winds festival which took place on Rutland Water on the 25th & 26th June. The story was based on the history of the area and the Gwash Valley , which was flooded in 1976 to create Rutland Water. As well as telling the story of the people and places of the area, The Way the Winds Blow also told the story of Rutland Water’s many passing visitors such as the ospreys who migrate each year to Africa. This unique event included a choir of more than 300 singers accompanied by a brass band, a concert orchestra and an African percussion band. Four professional singers and a narrator led this ambitious piece of storytelling directed by award winning director Chris Baldwin with music commissioned from BAFTA nominated composer Nick Bicat. Our students worked with the company - a mixture of English and Spanish directors and actors - for 6 weeks to produce the costumes, props and movement for the show – a very ambitious project.
FOur windsby anGela wilson
and Phoebe lawTon 7rM
We all got involved by going to a short meeting held by Chris
Baldwin, the director from Spain. He runs a drama company. He explained about a huge festival about the Ospreys travels and the run up to 2012 Olympics.
Then the people that thought it sounded interesting went to do Four Winds for enrichment. We started to make huge colourful feathers made from sparkly material. This took many weeks because we had to first make the outline out of feathers with willow sticks, then we had to cover them with netting. Then we had to cover the netting with the fabric using a special knot.
One day the Spanish company came with the choreographer. We practiced moving with the feathers effectively.
We all made friends with the Spanish people by working together as a team. It was fun and we all got along well.
Once we had practiced and worked with the birds we all went to Rutland Water twice to practice with the other schools. It all didn’t look as if it was going to be ready on time but then on the real show everything was pulled together and the result was amazing. The show was a great success with over 2000 people watching. The weather was brilliant and the whole experience was amazing and fun to do.
Uppingham Community College
A Specialist Technology Academy
Newsletter: July 2011
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Since converting to Academy Status on April 1st I am pleased to report that we have been able to make a number of positive decisions. These have included carrying out a complete survey of the College site and engaging an architect to begin to look at how we might develop the site into the future, which we would not have been able to fund under the previous scenario. Further, we have not only been able to maintain our staffing level but have increased it, thereby providing even more support for our students, opportunities that many schools are unable to provide in the current economic climate. We have created Specialist Teacher roles in Maths and English to enable small group working and reduced class sizes in Science and Design Technology.
As we plan for the new academic year, we will be able to continue to introduce changes which we believe will significantly benefit our students. Our aim is to ensure that Uppingham Community College is a centre of excellence in all areas and that all students achieve highly in their academic, sporting and performing arts spheres.
The summer term is also a time when we bid farewell to some colleagues who are moving on to pastures new. We have a number of staff who are retiring. Mrs Wignell is retiring after 25 years at the College, during which time she has inspired many drama students to achieve great things and many who have gone on to find success. She has contributed a great deal to the College during her time with us and will be greatly missed ! As will Mrs Stewart – who has been
at Uppingham Community College for 25 years. She has seen her department grow and develop and leaves behind a great legacy for future students. Mr Fagence has given so much to the College through his teaching and Head of Year roles and a very large number of students have much to be grateful to him for. We hope that he will continue to work with us as a rugby coach in our newly formed sports academy. Mrs Park is retiring from her role as Second in the English
department but she will be returning as a specialist tutor. Mrs Westcott is also retiring from her role as a Teaching Assistant, having given very valuable support to many students over the last 4 years.
Mr Gumbeer is also leaving, to become the Humanities Leader of Learning at Huxlow Science College in Irthingborough, Northants, a much deserved promotion and we wish him well. He leaves many happy memories of History lessons behind him – as well as the very memorable Berlin trips. Our Teaching Assistants, Ms Bonner and Mr Joy are changing roles as they begin to train with us as graduate teachers, as does Ms Manship who is taking up a PGCE place at the University of Bedfordshire to train as a PE teacher. Miss Shelton is also leaving us having been appointed to a new role as a Teaching Assistant in a Specialist Provision Unit. Mrs Bird is leaving the Canteen staff and we wish her well in her move to Wales. Mr Logan sees his term as the School Sports Coordinator come to a conclusion and he joins the PE Department on a full time basis. Mrs Rotherham joined us as a Science Technician just before Easter. This term, Mr Waterman has joined us in the Student Support department and Mrs Pearson is our new Librarian. We also had a new catering
staff member join us – Mrs Jones. There will be information about all our other new staff in the September newsletter.
I had the great pleasure of interviewing some wonderful students who applied for Senior Prefect posts – they were a credit to the College and to themselves. The outcome of this quite rigorous process was that the Senior Team for 2011-12 are:
Head Boy – Matthew RhodesDeputies – Harrison Ginn & Ed WrightHead Girl – Lorlor OsbornDeputies – Amelia Grice & Megan Lockyer Congratulations to them.
As usual the students at the College have achieved some quite outstanding successes this term and this newsletter celebrates many of their achievements. I am very proud of them all!
My best wishes for a very enjoyable summer holiday.

What a year it has been. All the Year10 students are thoroughly enjoying their
chosen courses and once again we have had another good uptake for the start of the new school year.
The Year 11 students have completed their courses and will all gain their qualifications. Edgar Ellis (Motor Vehicle at NCS) was award the Best L2 student in the college. Well done Edgar.
Our two Sport students completed their course at Catmose College achieving the highest grade available so a massive well done to Jamie Merrilees and Jordan Maglone-Gillies.
At the moment we are doing the round of Taster Days for the new cohort and thankfully each student is happy with their choice.
Every year the student commitment and achievement gets better and better, (no pressure on this years cohort then), each one works so hard and thoroughly deserves their qualification at the end. Well done all of you, and good luck you newbies.
TasTer day Trip TO new cOllege sTamFOrd
by courTney Mannion 9JM
On Tuesday 28th June 2011 I went with some others to New College Stamford
to do a Taster session for the Animal Care course; when we got there Marc took us into
the classroom and asked us to wait while he fetched the tutors. John-Paul, Adam and James came in and explained to us what we would be doing.
They took us outside and showed us some animals – ferrets, rabbits, goats, chickens
and much more, then we went to the Exotic animal room. In here were snakes, scorpions, tortoises, spiders (tarantulas), bearded dragons (lizards) and much more. We got to hold some of them if we wanted. I fed a mouse to a snake! Most of the snakes swallowed them whole! Then we went into the room that had chinchillas, guinea pigs, mice, gerbils, rats and lots more. In here we got to hold anything we wanted, I held a guinea pig. It was so cute! I think the day was a great experience for me and I am glad that I am doing it for my GCSE.

Year 9 French ExchangeDiary 2011
by becci Glover, 9Mi
Just under 2 months ago in May, 47 year 9 students took part in the second half of
the French Exchange in St Gildas des Bois. This is a brief diary in French about the activities we did during the 9 days.
I thought that the French Exchange over in England was fantastic but then I went to France. The variety of activities and the places to visit were just amazing and you had the opportunity to experience French culture and meeting a lovely French family. I would recommend this trip to anyone.

For the first time UCC students were invited to take part in Extreme Physics.
This was held at Rugby School during the Easter Break, it is sponsored by the Ogden Trust. Its aim is to encourage more students to take up physics related courses. The students had to take part in a number of team and individual challenges. The days were long 8.00am until past midnight, but there was also time for some fun activities including sky diving and rock climbing. The three days culminated in a presentation in front of the other participating schools, teachers , parents and a panel of judges.

Do you have an interesting job?Do you have a passion for your work?Would you like to share your expertise with our students?Could you offer a ‘hands-on’ experience?Could you spare an hour or so for a one off occasion?
If the answer to these questions is ‘Yes!’ then maybe you could run a one hour workshop
for 15-20 of our students?
The Cookie Club is an after school activity aimed at giving students experiences that
fall outside the normal school curriculum. It runs six times a year and has a wide variety of events on offer. For example, in the past we have run sessions on Forensic Science using microfossil evidence and professional
Cartoon Illustration. I am currently putting together the programme for next year and we are looking for people to run these sessions.
If you would like to run an activity, please call 01572 823631 or drop me an e-mail at anderson_d@ucc.rutland.sch.uk
The D&T department has had a successful, exciting year through its innovative approach to all the aspects of the D&T curriculum. The recent Art & D&T exhibition provided a chance to view the wide variety of
current Year 11 products that had been designed and manufactured for their final coursework projects. The exhibition showcased the use of Rapid prototype technology, exciting ceramics, contemporary styled textiles and cool product design. It’s exciting to see UCC students embracing cutting edge technology and producing high quality products. Next year there will be a further chance to view these products again with a new online gallery, check the UCC website for details in October.
Currently the Year 10 are starting on their final
coursework projects. There are already designs, prototypes and materials choices being made ready for the new term. After an excellent start to the course by Year 10, the D&T Department are excited to see the final designs being manufactured and completed to a high standard.
The D&T Department provides an array of engaging projects in a
wide variety of material areas for all years.
Taster day Year 6 students recently investigated HDPE Plastic Recycling and created their very own recycled plastic, from used milk bottles. The students observed the plastic being re-processed and then vacuum formed into a new flowerpot product, which were then taken home. (shown above*).
Year 7 were introduced to the Memphis Design style and balancing moments during a Taster day. Students were asked to create a Mobile using different materials, manufacture the product and design the packaging. The students produced some excellent final outcomes.

Year 9 students have attempted to build a working wind turbine, as part of a STEM challenge day. STEM for those
not in the know, stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Everyone nowadays is focused on how to use renewable sources of energy and students learned that engineers might have the answers. Students had to work in teams and learn the skills necessary to take on different roles. Real wind fans were used for judging – the wind turbines were judged precisely on their electrical output. The day was run by the Smallpeice Trust and students on our gifted and talented register were invited to take part. Our thanks to Mr Knight who organised the day and gave invaluable advice to teams as they worked on the challenge.

ruTland racing’s recOrd run!
On Thursday the 7th of July a team of 18 students from Years 7,9 & 10 known
collectively as Rutland Racing competed successfully in the Midlands Heat of the GreenPower Formula 24 Challenge. This is a national competition, in which around 600 schools and colleges compete annually. The aim is to cover the greatest distance in a four hour race using a 24V motor and three sets of batteries.
The students worked all year to raise the funds, to design and then to build the two cars that they took to the heat at Rockingham Motor Speedway.
Despite a very early start, strong winds and two periods of heavy rain, the teams fought valiantly to secure 26th and 28th place in the race in a field of 44 cars
While the strong winds reduced the potential to clock up a really big distance on the day, we were hoping to beat the 70 mile barrier, both teams managed to better last years
record with distances of 63 miles and 66 miles respectively.
Although not quite enough to qualify for the final, this is still the most successful result for the team. It is made even more impressive by the fact that we have had to reduce the capacity of the batteries by 1/3 to comply with this year’s stringent safety rules for the competition.
Rockingham is Europe’s fastest banked oval racing circuit, with the unbeaten lap record for the 1.5 mile oval set at 24.7 seconds. Our cars may have taken rather longer to complete the circuit ( 4’ 14” about 27mph!), but the racing was none the less exciting; the two Rutland cars vying with each other all day to gain the upper hand. When the chequered flag finally fell it was the younger team of drivers in the older car that had pulled out a three mile lead.
This year the team has been helped by a number of parents and sponsors who have given time, expertise and cash to help make
the event a success and we would like to thank:

Art & DESIGn
new Techniquesby Mr clack
It has been a really busy and productive year in the Art Department and students
have been making the most of resources while creating their art work. The arrival of the new printing press generously donated by Rutland Decorative and Fine Arts Society and National Decorative and Fine Arts Society was particularly welcome and it has enabled more students in all year groups to experiment with printmaking processes.
Year 8 students have been making Aztec based lino prints and GCSE students have been producing collograph prints, etchings and monoprints for their coursework and controlled tests. The expansion of the print-making area has opened up more options for GCSE students in particular this year and looks set to be a very popular modus operandi in the future.
Forty-one students completed their Art & Design GCSE this year and the Chief Moderator for AQA was extremely impressed with the breadth of work and the range of ideas presented by UCC students. A selection of students’ work went on to the Catmose Gallery for the Three Colleges End of Year Exhibition, where it has been receiving excellent feedback from the viewing public, including offers to purchase the Art on display. Sadly the Gallery facility is to close this August and Art & Design students and Staff at UCC would like to thank Abigail Bishop for all of her hard work and dedication.
A group of Year 10 Art students visited The Robert Smyth School in Market Harborough to see A level students at work in their studios and to get a ‘taste’ of what Post-16 Art has to offer. Staff at Robert Smyth were very welcoming and the students came away
further inspired to connect to a creative Post-16 pathway. Links to other establishments will continue to be forged and strengthened in order to empower UCC students with the best possible information prior to making option choices.
GCSE Art students are looking forward to visiting Cambridge Botanical Gardens mid October as a precursor to their mock exam unit and this has been traditionally a strong unit of work as a result of the exquisite nature of the first source experience on offer at the gardens.
Very well done to all Art students who have worked hard this year and have a great summer sketching in the fields! Things will continue to be busy in Art next year when another forty-eight Year 10s start the GCSE course in September.

Vale View Equestrian Centre near Melton Mowbray was the venue for this
year’s county Dressage and Show Jumping Championships which was organised by Belvoir High School.
UCC fielded teams or individuals in all of the dressage and show jumping classes and collected many placings throughout the day. Several of the younger members were representing their school for the first time and all did a fantastic job!
The County Dressage Championship was made up of two riders from the Prelim (Emily Lloyd and Ethan Frisby) and two riders from the Novice (Rebecca Williams 3rd and Grace Millbank 4th). These results led to UCC winning the overall team dressage competition, and becoming County Dressage Champions. Also riding for the first time was Matilda Farmer in Year 7.
We held a very successful day but none of this would have been possible without Ms Stewart and her continued enthusiasm and support. We would all like to thank her and wish her the very best for the future.
