IMPORTANT REMINDERS FOR PARENTS
Monday 4th June 2018 – Staff Development Day – School closed to pupils
Due to the new data protection rules starting from the 25th May 2018 we need to re-seek your consent to use images of your child in certain ways. Please
ensure this form is returned as soon as possible.
Your child should have come home with their chosen club slips this week. Please make sure you are aware of the day and times of your child’s club as we do not
have the facility to look after late children after clubs.
Dear Parents/Carers,
Term 5 has come to an end on quite a busy week. Year 2 had their trip to the Historic
Dockyard, Year 5 raised quite a handsome amount in their bake sale and we had parents of
our Nursery children into school to read stories!
I am sure all the parents of our Year 2 children will have heard all about the trip to
Chatham Dockyard. It was enjoyed immensely by children and staff alike.
Year 5 children worked really hard this week to bring in a wide range of cakes, muffins
and biscuits to sell to raise money. It was a successful Wednesday afternoon as Year 5
managed to raise… well you can read for yourself how much was raised overleaf.
It was lovely to see the parents of our Nursery children come in and read with their sons
and daughters. We have noticed that there has been a bit of a rise across the school in
children reading at home with Buster’s Book Club having a real positive impact!
As we say goodbye until next term, please remember that the final school term of the
year begins for the children on Tuesday 5th June. We hope you have an enjoyable week
and 1 day with your children and look forward to seeing you again on Tuesday 5th of June!
Mrs J Murphy
Headteacher
New Horizons are delighted to have received planning approval for a state-of-the-art,
artificial turf pitch, which will be for all year round use for our students and the local
community. We are passionate about creating this high-class facility that will benefit the whole
community, and are looking forward to welcoming everyone when the pitch opens later this
year. Work is due to commence during this half term and we can assure all parents that the
construction of the facility will have minimal effect on the day to day running of the school.
Nursery
This week in Nursery we
celebrated the end of our topic
‘Will you read me a story?’ by
inviting parents in to read with
their children. We have enjoyed
learning about Traditional tales
and have also made Gingerbread men this week as we have been sharing the story and re-telling it.
Reception
In Reception this week we have been learning
about the Royal wedding. We watched clips
of the wedding and have created our own
invitations, crowns, dress designs and many
more. The children have loved talking about
what they did at home during the wedding
and have created some amazing independent writing. Our term will
end with a Royal tea party on Friday. In Maths we have been learning
about halving. We made our own ladybirds and created their spots by
halving and doubling numbers.
Year 1
This week we have been working really hard to
improve our listening skills. I Maths
we have worked as a team to solve
problems. In Music we have used
movements on different levels to add to the sounds we
created. In Maths we have been using a number line to solve
missing number problems.
Year 2
This week Year 2 have enjoyed our visit to
Chatham Dockyard. We had an amazing day
and the children were all very well behaved.
We explored the Ocelot and were surprised by
how small and dark it was inside. We visited
Pirate Pip and learnt about famous pirates and the adventures pirates got
up to and we also visited the famous Victorian Ropery. In here, we helped
our guide to make our own rope. We are glad we are children living today
and not in the Victorian era as we decided we wouldn't want to have to do
the jobs children did then.
Year 3
This week Year 3 have been artists and have crested
Greek masks. They designed them, edited them,
moulded the clay and then painted
them. We were quite impressed with
what came out!
Year 4
This week we have been working on finding the perimeter and area of shapes
and working on improving our assessment scores. In English, as well as
working to improve our creative writing, we have written a letter to
congratulate the new royal couple and worked on new GPaS learning. To
celebrate such fantastic work this term, both classes will be having a marble
treat party to round off the term.
Year 5
As the term draws to a close we have been
busy baking for our Bake Sale to raise funds
for our residential. We managed to raise
almost £250. We have finished our topic with a collage and have written a fact file in English.
Thank you for all the donations of cakes we received!
Buster’s Book Club
Well done to Damson Class for having the most number of children meeting their
reading target. They beat Cherry class by just one child!
Well done Damson!
Remember our challenge night is Wednesday ask an adult to sign your bookmark!
Thinking Keys
There are 20 different 'Thinking Keys', each designed to unlock different parts of the thinking

should create their poster on A4 paper listing what they think the rules should be. The closing
date for all entries is Wednesday 6th June 2018. Good Luck!!
