ThestorytakesplaceinSaintPetersburgattheendofthe18thcentury.HermanlovesLiza,ayoungwomanabovehissituationwhoisengagedtoPrinceYeletsky.HergrandmotherisanoldandmysteriousCountess.InheryouthshelivedinFrancewhereshelearnedthesecretofthreewinningcards,whichsheusedtoaccumulateaconsiderablefortune.WhenHermangetswindofthislegend,hisdeterminationtodiscovertheCountess'secretbecomesmuddledwithhisloveforLiza,whohejoinsinherroomthatveryevening.Littlebylittle,thesecretbecomesanobsessionandHermanseemswillingtodoanythingtolearnthewinningformula.Unabletopry

ThestorytakesplaceatacountryestatenearStPetersburgattheendofthe18thcentury.MadameLarinahastwodaughters,OlgaandTatyana.Thefirstislight-heartedandinlovewithayoungpoet,Lensky.Thesecondisdreamyandmelancholic.Lenskyintroduceshisfriend,Onegin,toTatyanawhoimmediatelyfallsfortheblaséyoungman.However,rejectsherlove.Apparentlyinsensitive,OnegingoesasfarasflirtingwithOlgaatacountryball.ThisonlymakesTatyanamoremiserableandLensky,madwithjealousy,challengesOnegintoaduelinwhichhedies.Severalyearspass.EugeneOneginfinallyunderstandshisfeelingsforTatyana,butitistoolate-sheismarriedto

Le roi ArthuscomestotheParisOperaatlast!ThisrarelyperformedmasterpiecebyChaussonwaswrittenfortheOperaGarnierandhereitis,welloveracenturyafteritscompositionandposthumouspremiereattheThéâtredeLaMonnaieinBrussels.ApupilofMassenetanddiscipleofCésarFranck,Chaussonworkedtirelesslyforsevenyearsfrom1888to1894onthishisonlyopera.Likeallcomposersofhisgeneration,heviewedWagnerwithbothfascinationanddisgust.Herepeatedlymaintainedthat,“Weneedtobedewagnerised”butneverthelesscomposedaworkthatwastypicallypost-Wagnerian,anoperasuffusedwiththeverysoulofthemelancholicandluxuriantcomposerofPoème de l’amour et de la mer.
Chaussonwaswellawareofthisparadox:“Aboveallelse,there’sthatghastlyWagnerwhoblocksmyrouteateveryturn.Ifeellikeanantthatcomesupagainstahuge,slipperyboulderinitspath.Ithastomakeathousanddetoursbeforeitfindsawayroundit.That’swhatI’mupagainst.I’msearching[forapath].Ihaven’tlostpatienceyetandamnotwithouthope.”
Chaussondidfindhisway,givingtothe

Andsoitwas,followingthecomposer’sdiscoveryofFaustPartOnein1828thatGoethejoinedVirgilandShakespearetoformBerlioz'strinity.Withouttakingthetimetocatchhisbreath,hesettheversepassagesofGérarddeNerval’stranslationtomusicandpublishedthemunderthetitleHuitscènesdeFaust.Eighteenyearslater,duringhistravels“inAustria,Hungary,BohemiaandSilesia”hedecidedtoreviseanddevelopthematerialintoLa Damnation de Faust,whereuponthesamefeverishurgetookholdofhim:“Onceunderway,Iwrotethemissingversesasthemusicalideascametome.IcomposedthescorewhenandwhereIcould–inthecarriage,onthetrain,onsteamboats”.Asifsweptawayby“thelongingoftoovastaheart,andasoulthirstingforelusivehappiness”,Berliozbecameonewithhiscreation.Thevoicethat
invokes“immense,impenetrableandproudnature”isentirelyhisown,itsextraordinarybreadthtranscendingtraditionalformstobecomeasymphonicandoperaticdream.
