Club or Judoka Profile
A Judo Club or Judoka profile is something I’d like to make a regular feature of this
newsletter. Contact Chris Crook if you would like to see a profile done on your club or of
a particular judoka/volunteer in our future publications, or if you just have a bit of club
news that you would like to share with the rest of the county. Unfortunately I’ve no clubs
or judoka to report on for this edition.
Ladies Gradings Recreational female players looking to grade should fill out the “Application for
Information” in the newsletter. The county will then contact you and endeavour to arrange
a special grading when most players are available. Thank you to those people that have
already submitted forms.
Surrey Squad information

was given a special award for his services
to judo.
Sid Hearsey (Croydon JC) has recently been
awarded for his long services to sport by Croydon Sports Council.
Harry Randall (Dorking JC) has recently been
awarded for his long services to sport by Mole
Valley Sports Council.
New County Secretary
A special thank you goes out to Sonia Clarke (Croydon JC) who stood down as secretary this year, and a warm welcome to Angela Hammond
(Sovereign JC). Her contact details are : - Email : angela.judo@live.co.uk

Donyngs Recreation Centre – please keep it tidy !
There was plenty of rubbish left deposited on the floor and over
the seats after the Millennium League in Donyngs in March.
Please put the rubbish in the bins supplied or take it home
with you, and remember to take home your valuables !
Usual Plea for Volunteers to put out the mats !
Please remember that before every county judo event the mats
have to be laid out at Donyngs. It is always the same old
(yes some of us are getting on a bit) people
helping out. It only takes about an hour
when there are many people helping.
Always check out the Surrey website for
details of when the operation takes place the night before
a competition.
Crossword answer
Table Officials / Referees
MILLENNIUM LEAGUE
PARENTS CAN WIN POINTS FOR THEIR CLUB !
Points are awarded to NEW VOLUNTEER OFFICIALS who assist at the
League events for Table work, Time Keeping, Scoring or Medical (if
qualified). This bonus only applies to those who officiate and are not already
qualified competition officials. The points to be awarded are as follows.
Volunteer officiating at any League events = 5 bonus points
Volunteer officiating at all 4 League events = additional bonus 5 points
Maximum number of volunteers per club at any event = 2
Maximum number of bonus points available to any one club = 50 points
In order to claim these points each volunteer must report to the control table
on the day of the event, prior to the tournament commencing.
Any queries regarding the above please contact either Graham Beagley,
Sheila Hearsey, or Andrew Scarsbrook.
Have you ever thought about
becoming a Table Official or a
Referee for the County ?
If you would like more details
please talk to one of the BJA
committee members, or fill out the
form below. The most important
attribute to have is plenty of
enthusiasm !
Note that the county is always in
danger of cancelling its Judo
events due to an insufficient
number of officials being
available, so if you can spare some
time you will be helping to keep
Judo a thriving sport within
Surrey.
** Juniors **
If you train as a
table official at
the Millennium
League you will
pick up points for
your club !!
Note that the county will be holding combined Junior & Senior
Referees and Table Officials courses at Croydon Judo Club sometime
in the Autumn - date and venue to be confirmed.
Sid’s Bit
Some of you with very long memories will recall the feature “Sid’s Bit” in
the old newsletters. The intention behind the article was to get you thinking about your judo and to kick off useful judo discussions. Sid Hearsey has
kindly agreed to try and get this going again. Any feedback is welcome.
You can contact Sid on Sid.Hearsey@croydonjudo.com
THE SPIRIT OF JUDO
What is this spirit, an intoxicating brew, I think not. Can it be a ghostly
form floating through space, maybe as you are thrown for IPPON, although
you don’t float down to the mat. No it is something we learn from our
sport, it is respect to ourselves and to other judoka. No matter whether they be club or international players, each player striving to do their best be it
local club or in high level competition. The spirit is also passing on your
experience to other judoka, whilst not only their self esteem but also that of
their opponent in Randori or contest.
I have seen over the years many times when UKE has been thrown with a
well executed manner for Ippon, to get up from the mat smiling and say
that was brilliant and mean what he said. I do not like to see judoka going
against the spirit of our sport, to gain an advantage. The contest rules cover
all eventualities, but sometimes a rule is broken with regards to hard
objects. Hansoku-make being given to the offender. I regard watches and
now the dreaded Ipod, as a lapse of focus forgotten to be removed until
setting foot on the mat. The said hard objects are usually detected at the
Judogi Control if there is one, prior to the players going on the mat. I
would not penalise for this mistake although the rules say that I should. I am acting within THE SPIRIT OF JUDO, and I think the vast majority of
people will agree with my decision, thankfully these offences are not common.
We must not forget friendship is a powerful part of the Spirit of Judo, to newcomers ask their name and give yours, and offer the hand of friendship.
