forgotabouttheotherMartianrover:Opportunity.OpportunityhasbeenonMarsforover3000Sols,almost9Earthyears.Latelastyear,Opportunityhadarrivedat23kmwideEndeavourcrater,aplacesuspectedofharboringphyl-losilicaterock,similartoterrestrialclays.Inrecentweeks,OpportunityhassnappedpicturesofstrangesphericalnodulesinEndeavourcrater,onanrockoutcropcalled“Kirkwood.”Thesebasalticknobsaredifferentthanthehema-tite“blueberries”foundattheoriginallandingsite,andtheiroriginremainsamystery.Opportunityalsofoundwhatappearstobethephyllosilicateout-croppings,andiscurrentlytestingthecompositionwithitsarminstruments.Iftheseare,indeed,phyllosilicates,itmeansOpportunityisinalocationthatoncehadwaterthatwastheperfectcompositionforlife.
