Message from Membership The Club finished strong in 2014 with regards to member retention. Currently we still
have wait lists established in Recreation, Junior & Social Golf categories. 2014 also ended
with well-attended social events which included Gingerbread House Decorating, the Annual
Holiday Open House and Breakfast with Santa. Several new Club members used these as
an opportunity to meet fellow members while getting into the spirit of the holiday season.
The Membership Committee has planned a full Social Calendar for 2015 which will include
some events returning by popular demand. Take a look and please save the dates so that
you can enjoy the many social offerings that we have planned for your enjoyment.
Thank you for another fantastic year at The Woodlands and may the New Year bring joy
and happiness to you and your family.
Mary Anne
From the General Manager The recent completion of the Men’s Singles Championship in tennis marked the end of
Club Championships for 2014. As a result, I was able to order nameplates for all of the
2014 champion plaques located in the hall outside of the member dining room. I want to
offer a heartfelt congratulation to all of the Club champions this year! No matter what
sport you participated in, your victory was certainly the result of years of investment and
you overcame stiff competition from fellow members. While everyone undoubtedly has a
tale or two about their personal journey to the final, there are a couple of stories I would
like to highlight.
I begin by recognizing Dr. Mary Brandes, who in August won her 14th Women’s Club
Championship in golf, out of 24 total championships recorded--wow! That just stands on
its own. Moving to Tennis, I want to recognize a very talented family. Brian Mavor won
the Men’s Singles Championship that I referred to above, and it was his sixth such victory, to go along with two in
Men’s Doubles. The Woodlands titles are only a part of his very impressive tennis resume. I’m betting he has won
Mixed Doubles titles as well, but as I write this I don’t have that information. One title wasn’t enough for the
Mavor family however, as Brian’s daughter Lana, who is nationally ranked, won her first Women’s Singles
Championship recently. So, father and daughter hold the top two individual titles in tennis concurrently, but that’s
not all. The Mixed Doubles final featured yet another Mavor, as Brian and daughter Natalia took on Lana and Nick
Forrester. In this one, Lana and Nick prevailed. Finally, I want to note that Dad showed his political savvy by
bringing gifts for all competitors to the final, with a card that read “You are all champions!”
As I always do, I want to thank you very, very much on behalf of all the staff for your participation in the annual
employee holiday fund. They get the clear message that this is from you and they really appreciate it. I consider
2014 the best year for the Club in the almost 10 years I have been here, on several fronts. If 2015 brings similar
results and experiences it too will be a great year.
Until next month, we will see you around the Club,
Bill Robinson

Total Approach Nutrition Program Combining Exercise with Nutrition
We work out hard and with a highly dedicated enthusiasm for success, but we don’t
always see the results we want. Sometimes we have an idea of what we need and
should eat, but are lacking something you just can’t put your finger on. This program
will help you maximize your nutrition and fitness to meet your personal goals.
Commit to a supervised plan to start your 2015 off to a healthy start with an 8 week
program. Focusing on both exercise and fitness will help you to achieve your
personal goals for weight and fitness.
Program includes:
Nutrition:
Initial nutrition consult with Kay Mullin RD,CDE to help get your nutrition plan in
place (1 hour). Weekly nutrition follow up via Skype, email or phone (15 min). This
includes targeted personalized eating plan, supplementation assessment and tracking
options, recipe and meal prep ideas, grocery recommendations, healthy dining out
ideas.
Exercise:
Personal Training Sessions with a Woodlands Club Personal Trainer.
Meet twice weekly with 30 minute sessions to improve your fitness, strength and
personal goals.
REMINDER:

training rates will increase slightly.
The new rates will be:

From the Director of Fitness Happy New Year everybody!!! I hope you had the
greatest of holiday seasons and I hope the time you have
had with family and friends has been the best season
ever for you all.
A new year is upon us and with that comes new goals.
Whether it is a race you plan on doing, a vacation
planned, or to do more activities with the family,
exercise is the one constant that will allow you to enjoy
that time even more. If you need help, please let us
know by emailing me at ddow@thewoodlands.org and
we can set you up with one of the trainers for a new program, weekly sessions
or even set you up in a class.
We still have plenty of room in many classes. If you need to hold yourself
accountable to your new years resolutions, then come on in and enjoy a class!!!
Please remember that Monday, December 29 and Tuesday, December
30 the Fitness Center will be closed due to the carpet being replaced.
I apologize greatly for any inconvenience.
Yours in health,
Damian
Exercising Etiquette
Having Gym Shoes
Changing to indoor shoes and not
wearing street shoes in the gym
during the winter months helps the
fitness center equipment stay clean
and live a healthy and happier life.
Banging and Dropping
Weights
Please refrain from banging and
dropping the weights in the fitness
center. More than the disruptive noise, it shortens the life of the
equipment considerably.
Picking Up Your Equipment
Please return the equipment you
use during your workouts to their
rightful place, be courteous of your
fellow members and help keep the
fitness center clean and functional.
Guests in the Fitness Center
Please sign in guests when using
the fitness, Racquetball, and Squash
facilities. Guests are allowed to
visit these facilities, combined a
total of five times per calendar
year.

Golf
From the Director of Golf Would you like to make 2015 the year you really improve your golf game? We tend
to treat the golf learning process differently from other activities that require motor
skills.
Here are the accepted steps for motor learning for Baseball: Make the team. Go to scheduled
practices. Learn the basics- catching, hitting, throwing. Do drills so basics become second nature
Continue process throughout playing career.
Here are the accepted steps for motor learning for Music: Find a qualified instructor. Take
regular lessons. Learn the basics. Practice between lessons. Learn in a process from simple to
complex.
Here is how most of us attempt to learn Golf: Go to driving range with a friend who plays a little better than
you. From this person, take advice such as “keep your head down”, “keep your left arm straight”, “take the club
straight back and straight through.” Try out tips from your friends and the golf channel. Using your driver, hit hundreds
of balls to ingrain these habits.
Why do we deviate from a successful formula when it comes to golf? Doesn’t make much sense, does it?
If one of your resolutions for 2015 is to have more fun on the golf course, consider this version: Find an instructor
who is qualified and with whom you “click.” Take regular lessons. Learn the basics such as grip, aim, set up, swing path,
putting, chipping, centered club face contact. Do drills so that basics become second nature. Practice correctly
between lessons. Learn in a progression from simple to complex. Make improvement an ongoing process
Let our award winning professional staff help you make 2015 the year you have more fun (play better golf)!
Keep swinging!
Doug Van Wickler, PGA
January Golf Tip
This is a great time of year to focus on changes that will help during the warmer
months. Flexibility and Weight Training
We have a first class fitness staff here at The Woodlands. Take advantage of them!
Let them work with you to develop a personalized stretching and training routine.
This will pay off in added yards and increased stamina which means lower scores.
Keep Swinging
Tom Watson continues to amaze me with the high level of golf he has maintained
for years. When he is at his home in Kansas City, he swings a weighted club for five
minutes, twice a day. Keep those golf muscles active. A quick video analysis will
help to identify any swing changes necessary.
Putt, Putt, Putt
First, let our professional staff observe your stroke so that you practice positively
rather than groove a poor stroke. There are several good practice tools available
to aid in a repeatable putting stroke. All you need is your putter, some golf balls
and a carpet!
And finally, exercise your brain!
There is no shortage of golf instruction books. This winter is a great time to learn
about the mental aspect of golf. Take a look at the rules of golf too. It is sure to
save you some strokes!
GOLF SHOP WINTER SCHEDULE: CLOSED: January and February.
