Introduction
TheDepartmentofEastAsianLanguagesandLiteraturesoffersundergraduatedegreeprogramsinthelanguagesandliteraturesofChinaandJapan,Ph.D.programsinChineseandJapaneseliterature,andlanguagecoursesinChinese,Japanese,andKoreanfromtheelementarytoadvancedlevel.OurgoalistosupportthehumanisticstudyofEastAsianculturesthroughtheirlanguagesandliterarytraditions,ancientandmodern.

ThemajorinEastAsianLanguagesandLiteraturesprovidesanintellectuallyfocusedandrigorousimmersioninChineseandJapanesehumanities,allowingstudentstostudytwooftheworld’sgreatestculturaltraditionsindepth.WeoffercoursesthatreflectthevarietyofEastAsiantextualtraditions,pre-modernthroughmodern,andincludingfilmandtheater.Themajorisfocusedontheanalysisofliterature,culture,andthought,builtuponasolidfoundationoflanguagestudy;manyofourcoursesaretaughtintranslation,butstudentsalsohaveopportunitiestotakemanycoursesinwhichliteraryworksarereadintheoriginallanguage.MajorsselecteithertheChineseorJapanesetrack,butareencouragedtotakecoursesontheothertrackandtobecomefamiliarwithaspectsofEastAsianliteraryculturethattranscendthesegeographicparameters.
Allofourcoursesarealsoopentonon-majors,andwewelcomestudentswhohopetostudyChinaandJapanwiththecriticalrigorthatcharacterizeshumanisticstudyatYale.ManystudentscombineamajorinEALL,andmanystudymorethanoneEastAsianlanguagewhileatYale.TheEALLmajorscanbeappliedtoawidevarietyofacademicandprofessionalcareergoals,includinglaw,publicservice,educationandsocialscienceresearch,inadditiontoadvancedstudyofChineseorJapaneseliteratureand/orfilminmanyotherfields.
OurCoursesStudentswhowishtomajorinEastAsianLanguagesandLiteraturesshouldconsulttheDirectorofUndergraduateStudiesbythebeginningoftheirsophomoreyear.Thedepartmentstronglyencouragesstudentstostudyabroadforatleastoneterm.
ThefollowingcourseswelcomestudentsofallbackgroundsandweredesignedforYaleundergraduateswhoareinterestedinanintroductiontoEastAsianhumanistictraditions.Allreadingsareintranslationandnoknowledgeofthelanguagerequired.EALL200,TheChineseTradition:Anintroductiontotheliterature,culture,andthoughtofpremodernChina,fromthebeginningsofthewrittenrecordtotheturnofthetwentiethcentury.Closestudyoftextualandvisualprimarysources,withattentiontotheirhistoricalandculturalbackdrops.EALL211/511,Women&LitinTraditionalChina:AstudyofmajorwomenwritersintraditionalChina,aswellasrepresentationsofwomenbymaleauthors.Thepowerofwomen'swriting;womenandmaterialculture;womeninexile;courtesans;TaoistandBuddhistnuns;widowpoets;cross-dressingwomen;thefemalebodyanditsmetaphors;footbinding;notionsofloveanddeath;theaestheticsofillness;womenandrevolution;poetryclubs;thefunctionofmemoryinwomen'sliterature;problemsofgenderandgenre.SomeChinesetextsprovidedforstudentswhoreadChinese.EALL357/657,MeijiLiterature&VisualCulture:IntroductiontotheliteratureandvisualcultureofMeijiJapan(1868–1912),includingnovels,poetry,calligraphy,woodblockprints,painting,photography,andcinema.Therelationshipbetweentheoriesandpracticesoffineartandliterature;changesinwordandimagerelations;transformationsfromwoodblocktomovable-typeprintculture;theinventionofphotographyandearlyformsofcinematicpractice.
