New Right-of-Way Herbicides

J. Ferrell

University of Florida - IFAS

2 New herbicides

• Indaziflam – Bayer

• Aminocyclopyrachlor – DuPont

Objectives

• What do they do?

• What do they NOT do?

• Where do they fit?

Indaziflam

• 3 choices – Alion – Citrus

– Specticle – Turf

– Esplanade – ROW and industrial

Indaziflam • Family – alkylazine • Rate: 3.5-7 oz/A

– 3.5 oz turf release – 7 oz for bare ground

• MOA – cellulose biosynthesis inhibitor

• Favorable tox profile • Activity

– Preemergence activity – Grasses and some broadleaf

weeds.

Where does it fit?

• Roadsides or power lines for weed control? – Yes, but it will likely require a herbicide partner

• Bare ground sites? – This is where it really shines.

Can you find the Esplanade plot?

Esplanade

• What does it do? – Long-term control of grasses and select broadleaf

• What does it NOT do? – Control emerged weeds

• Where does it fit? – Bare ground sites

– An excellent rotation partner with Oust

Aminocyclopyrachlor

Aminocyclopyrachlor

• 4 choices (all industrial uses) – Perspective

– Viewpoint

– Streamline

– Method

Where does it fit?

• Roadsides? – Yes, excellent broad-spectrum herbicide

• Control of woody plants? – Maybe, but needs some help.

• Bare ground sites? – Good, but needs supporting herbicides.

ACP on Brush

• Foliar applications are weak on oak

• But, has been shown to be synergistic with applied with other herbicides (imazapyr).

• Looking for combinations for improved control.

Streamline 9.5 oz/A + 8 oz Arsenal AC (3.75 oz ai ACP + 1.2 oz ai metsulfuron)

Foliar applications

• Streamline struggles with oak.

• The addition of Krenite is not much help.

• However, low rates of imazapyr dramatically improve control.

Basal applications

• ACP is marginally effective on cherry.

• Garlon (triclopyr ester) performed as expected.

• These date are at 6 MAT. A lot can happen to change these results in the next 6-12 months.

Aminocyclopyrachlor

• What does it do? – Excellent on broadleaf weeds

• What does it NOT do? – Control weedy trees – needs some help.

– Bare ground sites – needs some help.

• Where does it fit? – Anywhere you find herbaceous weeds.
