Then and Now
New Literacies0Literacy is commonly referred to as the ability to read or
write. However, with the world constantly changing and improving through technology, literacy no longer only refers to these two things. People consider our age the “Information Age.” This means there are many new literacies present. These include:
Technological literacy
Information literacy
Visual literacy
Age of the Internet
0The continued development of the internet has led to the creation of many purpose-specific websites and applications. The following sites, among many others, have each revolutionized a specific aspect of how students and teachers interact with the educational system.
0Google, Blackboard, and Turnitin
Google0Of the millions of websites in operation today, Google is
perhaps the most widely used search engine. This is a result of its ability to translate words typed into the search bar into a well sorted list of links to websites, pictures, and files containing those key words. Because of its usefulness, the phrase “Google it” has become synonymous with “Look it up.”

Blackboard
0 Blackboard is a service-based website that focuses on improving the learning experience for both students and teachers alike. For a subscription fee starting at $10,000 per year, Blackboard provides schools with an educational interface that facilitates the transfer of information between a teacher and their students. Such information includes, but is not limited to, syllabuses, grades, assignment details, and any announcements the teacher wishes to share. Blackboard has revolutionized the way students receive their education, and paved the way for additional open source versions.

Turnitin
0Turnitin.com is a website that allows teachers to collect assignments online. In addition to its ability to collect assignments, Turnitin also provides grading rubrics and plagiarism detection. Recently, Turnitin has added a peer review system which allows students to be more engaged in the grading process which will hopefully improve the students understanding of what is expected of them.

Wrap Up0Our society is continuously changing every day through
technology. Literacy today does not just consist of reading and writing, people must become competent with new and upcoming technologies. Teachers and students alike can benefit immensely by utilizing technology in classrooms. The three examples given in this presentation are just a few out of the thousands that can benefit education.
