CONNECTORS

A Connector is a word that

join ideas. They are a great

way of improving your

English. Why? Because we

use them to express

relationships between ideas

and to combine sentences.

What is a connector?

When we begin learning a

language, we speak in very

basic sentences, a bit like

children.

Example: “London is a very

exciting city. London is very

expensive.”

Why are connectors necessary?

As we learn more words, we are able to start using sentence connectors to make more sophisticated sentences.

Example: • “London is a very exciting

city; nevertheless it is also very expensive”

• “Despite the fact that London is very expensive, it is also very exciting”

Why are connectors necessary?

•   The best way to explain how to use these words is to simply give you examples.

One thing they all have in common is that they are usually

attached to clauses.

That means they are attached to a group of words that

contains a subject and a verb.

AND

BUTOR

WHEN

ALSO

NOT EITHER

TOO

YET

CONNECTORS

MAJOR CONNECTORS :-

Coordinating connectors• And • Or• But

words or phrases are of equal importance and both conditions exist.

• We need some gloves and a • ball in addition to bats.

• An elephant and a • giraffe

AND

But: Connector of contrast

John is very rich but his friends

are extremely poor.

But, while, whereas are connectors that indicate that there are 2 different ideas in contrast.

BUT

It is used to show a contradiction between two

phrases.

• He ran, but he missed the bus.

OH NO!

ORIt joins two words .two phrases and two

clauses

university or a college.

too

Come at the end of the sentence

Example :-

Ravi likes rice ,Ritik likes rice too.

ALSO1-come before

the verb

2-beginning of a sentence

3-come between the

subject and the verb

They laughed. They also played.

They laughed. Also, they played.

They played . They laughed.

NOT EITHER

(with a negative idea at the end of the sentence)

EXAMPLE:-

Ritu doesn't like rice , raj doesn't like it to.

They didn’t laugh ,they didn’t play either.

YETWhen we use “yet,” we are contrasting two EQUALLY IMPORTANT

ideas. The emphasis here is that both phrases are equally important in your, the writer’s, opinion.

EXAMPLE:

Murder has no tongue. Yet it will speak.

The lion was hungry yet it did not attack Androcles.
