Helping to Reduce Distracted Driving Accidents

DISTRACTED DRIVERS

• There are 5 technologies that not only help reduce distracted driving but also protect you from distracted drivers on the road

1. ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

• Will warn drivers who use the technology of an unsafe distance with another vehicle.

• A variety of signals may be sent to inform the driver of trouble ahead.

• A driver may notice sounds, other signals and a

deceleration in speed to avoid a crash. Once a safe distance-to-speed ratio is achieved, the vehicle will return to the original cruise control speed.

2. ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL

• Mandatory on all new cars since 2012, electronic stability control is used to detect an imbalance between the direction that a car is moving and the steering position.

• Electronic adjustments are made to achieve steering corrections. Various sensors are used to detect whether braking mechanisms or traction controls are needed to prevent a vehicle from sliding.

3. ADAPTIVE HEADLIGHTS• Adaptive headlights turn with the

direction of the steering wheel to provide more light and increased visibility.

• Sensors are built into adaptive headlights to prevent directional adjustments while the vehicle is idle or in reverse.

4. FORWARD COLLISION WARNING

• A variety of automotive manufacturers provide forward collision warning systems to detect a crash.

• Using cameras, laser and radar systems, manufacturers are developing ways to forewarn drivers about unsafe conditions.

• If a driver fails to respond, some forward collision warning systems will reduce the vehicle’s speed.

5. LANE DEPARTURE WARNING

• If a vehicle starts to move toward another lane without engaging a turn signal, a lane departure warning system will alert the driver

• Using sensors that are mounted on the

vehicle, a lane departure warning will automatically assist an unresponsive driver with staying in a certain lane.
