Understanding neurological disorders requires knowledge of

neuroanatomy. This comprehensive and clear atlas of the

entire central nervous system is an excellent source of this

knowledge. It aims to provide maximal amount of informa-

tion, in the form of photographs and drawings. The format

ensures a pleasant, fruitful and logical experience. There

were several previous editions of this atlas (five English ones

in addition to Portuguese, Japanese and Chinese editions).

This new sixth edition continues the clinically oriented

approach, presenting structural information and concepts in

an even more clinically relevant format. The sixth edition

includes a number of new additions with over 100 new

images and illustrations (including MRI, CT, color line

drawings and brain specimens). An introduction and reader’s

guide chapter introduces the atlas and presents the rationale

for labels and abbreviations. Subsequent chapters include

dissections of the central nervous system, internal morphol-

ogy of the brain in slices and MRI, international morphology

of the spinal cord and brain in stained sections and

axial–sagittal correlations with MRI, and synopsis of func-

tional components, tracts, pathways and systems. A separate

chapter on anatomical–clinical correlations illustrates find-

ings in cerebral angiograms, MRA and MRV. Finally, a separate

chapter with more than 235 review questions is available for

revision and self-assessment.

This atlas is an excellent reference text of the human

nervous system for professional and graduate students. It is

most obviously appropriate for human neurobiology courses

as taught to medical, dental and graduate students from all

health and allied curricula. The addition of interactive CD-

ROM version ensures accessible and up-to-date improvement

in studying neurobiology.
