Safety Warnings, Cautions and Warranty
GeneralTo avoid interference, do not run cables parallel to AC wiring, or near fluorescent lights orother high magnetic or electrical fields. Interference from this kind of sources causingequipment to be faulty or fail working properly will automatically void warranty conditions.Access to the interior of the equipment shall be made by a Nera qualified technician only.
The equipment shall be installed by a Nera SatCom approved Installation & Service Agent.
Warranty is not valid until the "Nera Satcom AS Warranty Certificate" (at the back of theRegistration and Warranty Certificate booklet enclosed with the equipment) is signed by theapproved Installation & Service Agent, and returned to Nera SatCom.
GroundingGrounded AC power socket shall be installed near the equipment and shall be easily acces-sible. Connection to all type of equipment meant for operation of the unit must be done
while the unit is powered off. Peripheral equipment using mains shall be connected to agrounded AC power socket.
Cables and connectionsCables must be shielded. The shield must be grounded at both ends. All peripheral equip-ment must be grounded.
Cable lengths exceeding those specified for the equipment interface and connectors, willautomatically void warranty conditions.

Cable lengths beyond their maximum require special arrangements, cable extenders, shorthaul modems etc.
Connection of two (2) analogue telephone instruments in parallel is not acceptable.
Ventilation of the Below Deck Equipment
Ambient temperature range: 0 - 45oC.
To ensure adequate cooling of the MCU a 10 cm unobstructed space must bemaintained above and below the unit.
When wallmounted, ensure sufficient space above the MCU to permit removal of theModem Unit and Power Supply Unit. See "Placing the Main Communication Unit (MCU)".
Failure to comply with the above rules for installation will automatically void thewarranty.

SYSTEM
Below Deck Equipment - BDE
Main Control Unit The Nera F77 Main Communication Unit (MCU)- whichconstitutes the major electronic part - is designed for wall ordesktop installation. The MCU supplies 48 VDC power to the
ADE through the coaxial cable.The MCU mains input is 100 - 240 VAC 10%. The powerrequirement is approx. 40 W in receive/idle mode, andapprox. 150 W in transmit mode.
A CD supplied with the equipment contains a program forcontrol and operation from PC. See the Nera F77 - UserManual.
ISDN Handset The ISDN Handsetkeypad and built-in display allows dialingand control of the MCU and antenna.
Distress Alarm The Distress Alarm Unit provides remote activation of analert transmission and indication of incoming distress calls.

Placing the Antenna
Radome type Nera F77 is delivered either with mast mounted or deckmounted radome. See previous page.
The mast mounted version includes a hatch which providesaccess for service and repair, whereas the deck mountedversion must be lifted down.
Avoiding obstructions The antenna has a beamwidth of 7.5 degrees (at 3 dB points)and ideally requires a free line of sight in all directions above anelevation angle of +5 degrees.Any obstruction will cause blind sectors, resulting in signaldegradation or even loss of communication with the satellite.
Degradation of the satellite signal can only be completelyavoided by placing the antenna higher than any obstructions.This is often not feasible and a compromise must be made toreduce the number of blind sectors and cost of installation.
The degree of signal degradation depends on the size of theobstructions; the distance to them must therefore be consid-ered.
Preferably, all obstructions within 3 m of the antenna should beavoided. Obstructions less than 15 cm in diameter can beignored beyond this distance.
Radiation precautions Passengers should not be admitted in areas closer than 5 mfrom the antenna.
However, no restrictions are required when the antenna radomeis installed at least 2 m above the highest point accessible topassengers.
Personnel should not be close to the antenna for periods ofmore than 1 hour per day without switching off the RF transmit-ter.

Avoiding interference Do not locate the antenna close to interfering signal sources, orin such a position that the source (e.g. radar-antenna) radiatesdirectly into the Saturn antenna.
The Above Deck Equipment (ADE) should be separated as faras possible from other transmitters, and preferably by at least5 m from the antenna of other communication or navigationequipment, such as the antenna of the satellite navigator, theVHF antenna or radar equipment.
Compass safe distance For installation on British or Norwegian vessels, the antennashould be located at a distance of at least 1.0 metres from themagnetic steering compass. Be aware that requirements mayvary from one country to another.
Other precautions Do not place the antenna close to the funnel, as smoke depos-its will then eventually degrade antenna performance.
The antenna should be installed so that severe vibration andshock are avoided.If installed on top of a signal and radar mast, the mast must be
supported by stays.

Antenna Unit Mounted on Mast
Designing the Antenna mast
The mast must be designed to carry the weight of the antennaunit, approximately 65 kgs. It must be able to withstand windforces of up to 120 knots on the radome as well as the onboardvibration levels. The radome is 1.080 m high and has a maxi-mum diameter of 1.312 m.
The top end of the mast should be fitted with a flange with holesmatching the bolts extending from the bottom of the radome.See figure below.The flange must not be so large as to inter-fere with the hatch at the bottom of the antenna unit. The holesthrough the mast flange must be positioned symmetricallyabout the ships longitudinal axis.
NOTE: On ships with excessive vibration the mast must besupported by stays or other adequate means.
If the height of the mast makes it necessary to climb up to theantenna unit, a ladder must be provided on the mast column. Aguard rail must be attached to the upper section for safetypurposes. If the height of the mast exceeds approximately 4.5metres, an access platform should be attached to the mastapproximately 1 metre below the radome bottom.
Be aware that requirements may vary from one country toanother.

Placing the Main Communication Unit (MCU)
The Main Communication Unit should be placed in a ventilatedarea. To ensure adequate cooling of the MCU a 10 cm unob-structed space must be maintained above and below the unit.
A space of 10 cm above theMCU is also required toallow removal of units.
For grounding, see"Grounding considera-tions" and "Location andgrounding of units".
Ambient temperature range0O - 45OC.
The MCU is manufactured as
a cabinet for wall or desktopinstallation with dimensionsas shown. Six holes throughthe MCU mounting plateallows the unit to be securedto the wall or desk top.
Placing the Distress Alarm Unit & ISDN Handset
The Distress Alarm Unit is operated inconjunction with an ISDN Handset.
The ISDN Handset functions as a displayand communication unit for alert trans-mission. It may also be used for normalvoice communication.
Up to two (2) Distress Alarm Units &ISDN Handsets may be connected inseries. The units may be installed any-where onboard the vessel.
Four separate ISDN ports are available
on the MCU as RJ45 jacks or screwterminal blocks.
Max cable length: 100 m, 4 x 0.22 mm2.See "ISDN telephones/equipment"
Placing the ISDN Handset as a standard telephone
The Nera ISDN Handsets may be installed asstandard telephones. The units may be in-stalled anywhere onboard the vessel.Four separate ISDN ports are available on the

Placing the telefax (option)
A digital telefax (Group 4) can be con-nected to one of the ISDN outlets, or toan ISDN bus for transfer at 64 kbps rate.
An analogue telefax (Group 3) shouldbe connected to the FAX (GR3) outlet,providing up to 28.8 kbps transferspeed.
Placing the PC (option)
A PC w/ISDN card can be con-nected to one of the ISDN outlets,or to an ISDN bus for 64 kbps ratedata communication for installationup to 100 m away from the MCU.
With the PC connected to the USB/RS-232/RS-422 port it can also beused for control and configurationof the Main Communication Unit.This requires that the vtLite Marineprogram accessible on the Nera F77 CD is installed.
Connection to the USB/RS-232/RS-422 port also allows64 kbps data transmission.

Grounding considerations
A successful installation of a maritime satellite terminal must takeinto account the noisy environment in which the equipment shalloperate.
Electrical noise The electrical environment on board a ship is usually quite noisy.Powerful electrical installations cause voltage variations andtransients, as well as low and high frequency noise. Radio andradar equipment radiate radio frequency signals which frequentlyimpregnate cables on board with unwanted interference.
Ground plane Most ships have a steel hull. One should think that the steelconstruction of the ship would constitute a good ground plane.This is often not quite true. Rust, other forms of corrosion, paintand grease, often prevent a good ground connection. A conse-quence of this is that high energy power distribution on board aship can cause significant ground potential differences.
Antenna unit Adequate grounding of the Antenna Unit depends on thefastening bolts making good contact with the top flange ofthe mast. This is obtained by removing paint and usingenclosed toothed washers and nuts.
Antenna cable The antenna coaxial cable normally has a solid or meshed metalscreen which must be terminated to ground both at the antennapedestal and at the MCU. The length of the cable can often bemore than 40 metres. If the ground potential level at the twopoints differ, the current passing through the screen of the co-axial cable can be quite strong. The antenna cable screen consti-
tutes a heavy gauge wire, which is capable of conducting largeamounts of current.
Below Deck Equipment The MCU must be provided with a good electrical connection tothe ships hull for grounding. This is obtained by using copperfoil. (See Installation: "Location and grounding of units".)Length of copper foil/10 cm should not exceed 300 cm. The foilshould be connected to ship's hull (deck or roof) by hard-solder-ing (or screws) to steel.
Mains power/ground Mains ground is secured to the common grounding point throughthe external supply. It is therefore important to use the samemains branch for additional equipment connected to the MCU
(Fax, PC w/printer etc.).

Laying cables
General The coaxial cable for connection between the MCU and theAntenna Unit should, if possible, be laid before the equipmentarrives. Make sure sufficient length of cable is ordered.
Where exposed to mechanical wear (on deck, through bulk-heads etc.), the cable should be protected by steel pipes.Standard procedures should otherwise be followed for cablingin ship installations.
Special attention to existing safety regulations is required if thecable passes through zones where there may be flammable orexplosive gases. Use suitable gasproof cable glands or bush-ings. Be aware that the cables listed in the table below are notflame retardent.
Double screen 50 ohm coaxial cable must be used. The maxi-
mum length of the coaxial cable is limited by the DC and RFloss through the cables (including pigtails):
Maximum DC loss: R loop 2.0 ohm
Maximum RF attenuation at 1.6 GHz: < 23 dB
The table below lists suitable double screened coaxial cables between MCU and ADE:
At the Antenna Unit A free end of approximately 1.5 m of the antenna cable abovethe radome bottom should be provided for connection to thecoaxial connector in accordance with the installation instructionsin "BDE - Connecting the coaxial cable to the MCU".
At the Main The coaxial cable from the Antenna Unit should be given aCommunication Unit free end of approximately 0.5 m at the MCU location.
Nera ISDN Telephone, Choose the position for the required wall sockets and layDistress Alarm Unit, the cables leaving a free end of 0.5 m. Also allow a free end oftelefax or analogue 0.5 m at the Termination Box.telephone

Unpacking
Open all boxes supplied and check the contents with the enclosedpacking list. Inspect units and parts for possible transport damage.
Installing the Above Deck Equipment (ADE)
Mast mounted version
Installation on the mast The ADE radome is furnished with 4 lifting lugs accessible fromunderneath the radome, see figure below.
The radome is delivered with the straps attached to the lugs,ready for lifting of the ADE by crane.
Remove the straps fastening the radome to the transport pallet.Carefully start lifting the ADE.
WARNING! Personnel must not pass underneath the ADE duringhoisting operations.
WARNING! Watch your hands!
Align the bolts extending down from the bottom with the holesthrough the mast flange, andlower the unit gently until itrests on the mast.
Secure the ADE to
the mast flangeusing the enclosedtoothed washersand nuts. Tightenthe nuts applyinga torque of100 Nm.
Finally, removethe lifting straps.

Deck mounted version
Installation on the mast The deck mounted radome is delivered with a strap net, readyfor lifting of the ADE by crane or similar.
Carefully start lifting the ADE.
WARNING! Personnel must not pass underneath the ADE duringhoisting operations.
WARNING! Watch your hands!
Align the bolts extending down from the bottom with the holesdrilled through the fixing structure, and lower the unit gently untilit rests properly.
Secure the ADE using the enclosed toothed washers and nuts.Tighten the nuts applying a torque of 100 Nm.
Finally, remove the strap net.
Keep the strap net for hoisting the antenna down for service.

Nera ISDN Handset
The ISDN Handset is to be plugged into theISDNsocket located on the connector panelof the MCU, or to the Distress Alarm Unit (if
installed).Note! It is not recommended to extend thehandset cable by more than 6 m.
Handset holder/cradle
The handset holder/cradlemay be desk mounted orwall mounted.
Attach the holder to the wallor desktop with four 4 mmwood screws or tappingscrews.
Place the Handset on theholder as shown.

Mounting the Main Communication Unit (MCU)
1 Unscrew the Power Supply Unitand the Modem Unit and pull them
carefully out.Remove the cover protecting theconnector panel.
2 Attach the bottom plate to the wall usingsix wood screws or tapping screws.
Ensure a free space above and belowthe MCU of at least 10 cm foradequate cooling, and toallow removal of theModem Unit andPower SupplyUnit.
3 Mount the Power Supply Unitand Modem Unit. Remount theconnector panel cover after con-nection of cables.
NOTE!
Secure the MCU even when desk
mounted.

BDE - Connecting the coaxial cable to the MCU
1Strip the Antenna coaxial cable leaving sufficient slack
for connection to the MCU or "pigtail".
2Mount the N-plug on the cable in accordance with theinstructions(see Appendices 1 - 6).
3For thicker coax cable, use the "pigtail" for connection ofthe Antenna cable to the MCU.

connector panel, either to terminal blocks or RJ45 jacks.An ISDN bus of max. 8 wall sockets can be connected to oneofthe ISDN outlets. Max. extension length: 100 m, min. 0.22 mm2.

The Distress Alarm Unit is connected to the ISDN bus/connector on the MCU.The maximum number of Distress Alarm Units is limited to two.
When connected to the Distress Alarm Unit, in addition to regular ISDN voiceservice the ISDN Handset will also include the capability for Distress handling(Transmit & Receive).
When longer than 10 metres, the end of the ISDN bus must be terminated by tworesistors as shown below.Be aware that only one ISDN cable is permitted to be longer than 10 metres.

Analogue telephones
Wall socket for analogue telephone/telefax gr.3 (option)
The telephone and/ortelefax cable can beterminated in a wallsocket, as shown.
Remove approx. 3 cmof the jacket from thecable end, strip off 1cm of the insulationfrom each core andconnect to centre
terminals 4and 5.Interchanging of thewires at terminals 4and 5 has no effect.
Analogue telephones are connected to the TEL1throughTEL3outlets. The FAX connector isintended for Gr.3 telefax. For TEL3 and FAXRJ45 jacks are provided in parallel.
See diagrams for RJ11 pin configuration.Max. extension length: 150 m, min. 0.22 mm2.

106 Clear to sendOFF indicates that DCE (Nera F77) cannot accept data from DTE (PC).ON indicates that DCE (Nera F77) is prepared to accept data from DTE (PC).
107 Data Set ReadySignal from Nera F77 that when ON indicates that a data call setup is in progress.
108 Data Terminal ReadySignal from PC. This signal is used in the Hotline mode and indicate when going from OFF to ON thatthe PC wants to make a data call. The PC clears the call by setting the signal from ON to OFF.
109 Receive Signal IndicatorSignal from Nera F77 that when ON indicates that connection is established and received data will bedelivered on circuit 104, Received Data.
125 Ring IndicatorSignal from Nera F77. This signal is used in the Auto answer OFF mode and when ON indicates that
an incoming call is in progress. The signal will go OFF when the call is answered by the PC by turningcircuit 108 Data Terminal Ready ON.

Slide nut A, washer B and gasket C onto cable.Remove 8.5 mm (6.5 mm for angle plugs) of jacket withoutdamaging the braid.Cables with double braid: Remove 9 mm (7 mm for
angle plugs) of jacket.Armoured cables: Slide two-piece armour clamp ontocable, instead of nut A. Remove 29 mm (27 mm for angleplugs) of armour.
Push braid back and widen it slightly, but do not comb itout. Cut off dielectric 5 mm (3 mm for angle plugs) fromend, even and perpendicular to cable axis.Caution: Do not damage centre conductor.
Taper braid towards centre conductor. Position clamp D sothat its shoulder fits against cable jacket.
Fold back braid over clamp Dand cut it off in front of theclamp rim. Check dimension of 1.5 mm. Tin centre con-ductor of cable.Heat contact pin or bush E with a soldering iron ofapprox. 250 W. Tin bore hole sufficiently. Insert centreconductor into hole and remove soldering iron quickly inorder to prevent dielectric from deformation.
Insert connector body. Screw in and tighten nut Awithwrenches of 16 mm, type 74Z 0-0-3, until rubber gasket Cis split. Do not distort cable and connector body.Armoured cable: Finally, screw on and tighten armourclamp.

Reception of L-band Broadcast signals
In addition to regular 1.5/1.6 GHz, used for the various Inmarsatsystems, the transponders in the satellite also broadcast leasedchannel info.
The design of Nera F77 with L-band (1.5/1.6 GHz) signalsbetween ADE and BDE, easily enable insertion of DirectionalCouplers to pick up broadcast RF signals.
Such signals are Differential GPS (GPS corrections), MaritimeChart Corrections, Radio Broadcasting channels, etc.
The diagram below indicates typical installation for reception ofbroadcast signals.
