A round of applause to NAVP
Vice President, Jeff Robinson, onhis amazing work with the Boy
Scouts. of America.
In the same remote valley where
20 people died in a flash flood
last year, six Louisiana Boy
Scouts, trapped by rising rivers
built a campfire and ate jambalaya
and grits.
The boys had two scout leaders
who were well prepared andplanned for all disasters and cir-
cumstances. They camped on
high ground near an area they
could climb if the waters rose.
And they had enough food to
hold them over for the extra
days they were stranded.
It was a series of good planning
and preparation that kept them
all safe. The boys and the Scout
leaders were eventually rescued
by helicopter.
Only Jeff would be prepared to
be stranded with plenty of Jamba-
laya! This made national news!

A recent study at the college of Optometry, Univer-
sity of Houston, has found that myopia increased by
66% between 1970 and 2000. Though myopia has a
strong genetic component, genes alone cannot ex-
plain the increase. Researches believe spending
more time outdoors
away from the Wii and
GameBoys could help decrease the risk of myopia.
One theory is the eyes need a certain amount of
light intensity found out doors.
Another is we look more in the distance when we
are outdoors.
A 2008 study in the journal of Ophthalmologyfound that 12 year olds who spent more than2.6 hours outside were less likely to have myo-pia.
Susan Vitale, a research epidemiologist at NEIstates that we know that many things work
together to contribute to myopia.genetics,
near work, and outside time are a few.
Looks like being outside is good for your
healthin more than one way!
