TheNavisfloathasatraditionallayout,withthesensorheadatthetop,andthebuoyancybladdersatthebottom.TheNavisbuoyancyengineusesapositivedisplacementpistonpumptotransfersiliconoilfrominternaltoexternalreservoirstoincreasethefloatvolumeandcauseittorise.Theclosed-loop, recirculating oil systemutilizes a seamless natural rubberexternalbladder,andanoilreservoirfilledto300ml(>175mlrequiredforoperationto2000dbarsinPacificOcean).Thissystemprovidesimprovedenergy efficiency, better parking stability, and increased depth rangeoverexistingfloats.Navisisself-ballasting,yieldingreduceddeploymentpreparationtime.

TheNavisbuoyancyengineisaugmentedattheseasurfacebyinflationofanairreservoir.Thissurface-following functionprovides400mlofexcessbuoyancytoimprovesurfacecommunications.Theopen-loopairbuoyancysystemusesaseamless,natural-rubber,externalbladderandoil-augmentedbladdercrushprevention.

At the surface,Navis uses aGarmin 15xL-WGPS to acquire positional information,with ameanacquisition timeof70 seconds. It then transmits the acquired data via an IridiumTransceiver 9522B,with a nominal transmission timeof275secondsfora2000dbarprofilecycle(2dbarbinsofCTDdata).TheIridiumantennaismountedontheCTDendcap,andissupportedbytheCTDcellguard.

TheNavisaluminumhull hasasmallerdiameterand length thanexistingfloats,providinga lightweightandcost-effectivepackagethatrequireslessenergytooperate.ThefloatispoweredbytwelvelithiumDDbatteriesinaSea-Birdbatterypack.Thebatterypackprovidessufficientpowerfor300CTDprofilecyclesto2000dbars.

TheSBE41CPCTDmeasurestemperature,conductivity,andpressurecontinuouslyat1Hzthroughascentandprovideshighaccuracy,resolution,andstability.Thepump-controlled,T-Cductedflowconfigurationminimizessalinityspikingcausedbymismatchoftemperatureandconductivitymeasurements.Thecarefullyengineeredanti-foulprotectionincludesanti-foulantdevices,aU-shapedflowpath,andanintegralpump.Onthefloat’sascent,asitapproaches10to5dbarsbeneaththeoceansurface,thepumpturnsoff.TheU-shapedflowpathpreventsseasurfaceoilsandcontaminantsfrombeingingestedwhileproceedingthroughtheoceansurfaceskinandsittingatthesurfaceduringdatatransmittal.Betweenprofiles,thepumpisoff.TheU-shapedflowpathpreventswaterflowthroughthesystemcausedbywavesorcurrents;minuteamountsofanti-foulantconcentrateinsidetheconductivitycelltominimizebio-fouling.
