Natural Gas Terminology• CNG – Compressed

Natural Gas.• LNG – Liquefied Natural

Gas.• NGV – Natural Gas

Vehicle.• Therm – Unit of

measurement of Natural Gas equal to 100,000 btus.

• GGE – Gasoline gallon equivalent.

• DGE – Diesel gallon equivalent.

• BTU – British Thermal Unit is a measurement of energy equal to the amount of heat it takes to raise 1 lb of water 1 degree F.

Why Choose Natural Gas as a Transportation Fuel?•Clean•Abundant•Domestically Produced•Economical•Safe

Natural Gas is Clean•Natural Gas is composed of approximately

97% methane.•It is considered to be the cleanest fossil fuel

because it produces fewer emissions than other fuels.

•Compared to gasoline or diesel, Natural Gas has the least amount of carbon. Natural Gas is CH4, Diesel C14H30, and Gasoline C8H18.

Continued:

•CNG vehicles produce approximately 25% less CO2 than gasoline or diesel.

•They also produce approximately 80% less nitrogen oxide than gasoline or diesel and approximately 90% less particulates.

America’s Abundant Supply of Natural Gas•With recent discoveries North America’s supply is estimated at 120 years.

•Landfill gas could produce the equivalent of 10 billion gallons of gasoline yearly.

Natural Gas is Domestically Produced•98% of the Natural Gas we use comes from North America!

•Approximately 60% of the oil we use comes from foreign countries.

•Approximately $1 billion a day leaves this country due to oil imports.

•American Fuel = American Jobs!!

Economical •Natural Gas is less expensive than gasoline or diesel.

- A gasoline gallon equivalent (gge) of Natural Gas is approx. $1.50 to $2.50.

-A diesel gallon equivalent (dge) of Natural Gas is approx. $1.75 to $2.50.

11

Natural Gas is Safe•Natural Gas has a high ignition temperature of approximately 1200 F compared to Diesel which is 494 F and Gasoline which is 536 F.

•Natural Gas is lighter than air, will not lay on the ground, and it dissipates when released.

12

Natural Gas Facts•Natural Gas is colorless, odorless, and non-toxic.

•Natural Gas is considered the cleanest fossil fuel compared to coal or oil because it produces fewer emissions.

WHAT’S AVAILABLEBelow are just a few examples of the CNG vehicles on the road today!

14

Lead By Example!

15

Natural Gas Fast Fill StationFast fill stations fill vehicles rapidly using compression equipment and high pressure gas-storage systems. They take about the same time to fill as any gasoline pump.

16

Natural Gas Time Fill StationsTime fill stations typically fill the vehicles overnight. They are ideal for fleets that return to a central location or for a home filling station.

This presentation was produced in conjunction with the Tennessee Gas Association.• The Tennessee Gas Association is here to support

the growth of the natural gas industry in Tennessee by enhancing the overall performance, safety, competitiveness and public awareness of its members and their products and services.
