The Story of Native Americans
§1 When Christopher Columbus set first foot on America in 1492, he
was welcomed by brown skinned people whose physical appearance confirmed
to him in his opinion that he has last arrived to India and whom therefore,
he called Indios or Indians. These people, the Native Americans, have lived
in America for almost 12000 years. They gathered in tribes with different
races, languages, customs and cultures. There were about 550 tribes among
which lived 10 million of Indians. Cheyenne, Cherokees, Apaches and Sioux
were the most famous and powerful tribes.
§2 During the first years, Native Americans were very helpful to the
Europeans and they guided them around what is now America.
§3 In the 16th and 17th century, the Europeans; especially British,
Spanish and the French began to arrive and settle America. The British
founded the first colony “Jamestown” in Virginia in 1607. They changed the
Native American way of life for the worst. They brought with them
diseases like: small pox, Malaria, typhus and influenza that killed about 80
millions of Indians within 20 years.
Native Americans were treated like savages, killed and raped violently. The
British illegally dominated the Natives’ lands and unfairly forced them to
move-away.
§4 Native Americans didn’t like the way they were being treated.
As a result, a war appeared between the Native Americans and the
Europeans that lasted over three centuries and left thousands of colonists
and Natives dead. The first conflict started in 1622 in Virginia and ended
tragically on the Wounded Knee massacre on December 29th, 1890 in South
Dakota where over 350 Indian warriors, women and children were savagely
slaughtered.

ropes. They also used to paint their faces and put feather
headdresses.
Kiowa people fed on milk, rice and the buffaloes’ meat.
They were skillful flute players. Many of them used to speak the
Kiowa old language.
Situation Three:
Native Americans emigrated from Asia to America to look for
food and for new hunting grounds. This was about 15.000 years
ago. But what did Natives look like?
Use the following information to describe the Natives physically.
Height Weight Hair Eyes Skin
tall slim long
straight
black light brown
dark brown
Clothes Jewels
Leather skits Earrings/shells
bracelets/horns
Native Americans
People we call now Native Americans came from Asia about
15.000 years ago. There were a lot of tribes and they did not
look the same. Most of them were tall and slim with long straight
dark hair and black eyes. Their skin varied from light brown to
dark brown.
Native people made their clothes out of leather. Men and
women wore ornaments. Earrings and bracelets were made of
shell, teeth and horns of animals they had killed.
Situation Four
The life of the buffalo was inseparable from the life of the
Native Americans. The buffalo or the American bison existed
long before the Natives came there. There were millions of them
those times.
Unfortunately the buffalo is classified as a threatened or
endangered animal.
Use the following information to write a report about this animal

The Buffalo a Species in Danger
When the Natives arrived to America, there were millions of buffaloes
in the wild American plains.
The buffalo or the American bison is a domestic animal. It lives in American
plains. It is so strong that no other animals like lions or wolves can beat or
hurt it.
Buffaloes have large bodies with dark brown coats. They weigh from
410 kilos to 818 kilos. They live for 28 years on the average but they may
well live for up to 40 years.
Buffaloes are multi purposeful animals not only as better source of milk
than the cows, but they also provide meat and works as natural sources of
energy. Unfortunately, they are threatened to extinction due to over hunting
for meat and coats.
A lot can be done to save this species. Government should officially
ban hunting this animal illegally and build natural reservations to breed it.
Situation Five:
A happy and successful family life was important to the
Native people. Each member in the family had to keep his role.
Use the following notes to write a composition about Natives
family life.
Natives / live / family groups / tribes
The chief, tribe/ the wisest, bravest, most
powerful
give orders / wars / food / religion
men: responsible / family feeding

Native Family life
Most Native people lived in tribes. Each tribe had a different size.
They lived in family groups.
Natives had to live in harmony because any dispute could weaken the tribe
and lead to fighting.
The powerful chief was the bravest and the wisest man in the tribe.
His role was to give orders about wars, hunting and religion.
In the family, the grand-father was a respected man. He taught his grand-
sons horse riding, hunting and using bows, arrows and other tools.
The grandmother used to teach her grand-daughters how to cook, skin
buffalo and make clothes.
The father was responsible for feeding the family and hunting. The bravest
men were warriors: they fought to protect their villages against enemies.
The mother stayed at home to look after her children. She was responsible
for cooking and cleaning the house.
Children used to spend their time playing and sometimes learning horse
riding.
