New Fork River Crossing Historical Park staff installed a new footbridge over a muddy swale last summer. The park’s dedication ceremony occurs on June 21, 2014.

Design/Development• NTIRstaffisreviewingtheAlcoveSpringDCP,tobefinalizedsummer

2014.NTIRisassistingtheAlcoveSpringPreservationAssociationwithplanningforvolunteerwork.

• TheMemorandumofAgreement(MOA)withCaltransfortheCaliforniaNHTsigningprojecthasbeenreviewedandisawaitingsignaturebyCaltrans.OncetheMOAissigned,fundscanbetransferredtotheNPS,andaprojectschedulewillbeset.

• OriginalRouteandsitesignsfortheSantaFe,Oregon,andCaliforniaNHTshaverecentlybeeninstalledinSugarCreekandIndependence,Missouri.OCTAispursuingOriginalRouteandsitesigningforthethreetrailsinRaytownandKansasCity,Missouri.Additionalsignprojectproposalsforotherareasalongthetrailsarestillneededforfundingthisyearorin2015.

• CaliforniaNHTsignshavebeenshippedtoDoniphanCounty,KansasandwillbeinstalledalongtheSt.JoeRoadinthespring.

NTIRhasfinishedanalysisoftheproposedadditionstothevariousstudyroutes.Wehavestartededitingalternativesanddevelopingthedraftdocument.Thedocumentwillbereadyforinternalagencyreviewinearlysummer2014.

Thestudyteamdevelopedtwoactionalternativesandanoactionalternativeforthefeasibilitystudy/environmentalassessment.Apreferredalternativehasnotbeenidentified.NTIRiscontinuingtorevisealternativesbasedontherecentlycompletedanalysis.Formoreinformation,pleaseaskaplanningteammemberorgoto:

Four Trails Feasibility Study Update Placeholder

InDecember,anewGISSpecialistDerekNelsonjoinedourSaltLakeCityoffice.DerekisaUSArmyveteranandhasadiverseGISbackground.HetransferredfromCapeCodNationalSeashore.

NTIRcontinuesworkwiththeOCTAMappingChairandvolunteerstoenablemappingactivitiesalongthetrails.Recentproposalsfor2014includemappingactivitiesinOregonandCalifornia.In2013,OCTAvolunteermappingactivityoccurredinWyoming.

GISstaffandtheUniversityofUtahwillcontinueprovidingsupportontranslatingmappedmarkerinformationfromtheOCTACrossroadsChapter.

OntheOregonNHT:ColumbiaGorgeDiscoveryCenter&WascoCountyHistoricalMuseum,TheDalles,Oregon

National RegisterKansasStateHistoricPreservationOffice(KSHPO)reportsthatScottSpring,theUpperWakarusaRiverCrossing,thePachaRuts,andtheAlcoveSpringboundaryexpansionhavebeenlistedtotheNationalRegisterofHistoricPlaces.Inaddition,theLoneElmCampgroundnominationisinreview,andtheClearCreekSwalesareeligibleforlisting.TheHarmonParkSwalenominationwasreturnedtoKSHPOwhenthemunicipalityobjectedtothelisting.Eightadditionalnominationsareinvariousstagesofpreparation.

OregonStateHistoricPreservationOfficehaspreparedafinalMultiplePropertyDocumentationFormfortheOregonTrailthroughOregon,aswellasnominationsfortheBlueMountainCrossing,WellSprings,andWhiteSwanandFlagstaffHilltrailsegments.Theyarenowawaitingstatereviewboardapproval.

NTIRfundedthesenominationsthroughcooperativeagreements.

Trail Exhibit Highlights

PhaseIsitedevelopmentwillbecompleteinMay2014.Nineexhibits,siteidentificationsigns,anADApath,trailconstruction,andaparkinglotcontinuetobedevelopedforthededicationceremonyinJune2014.

ExhibitstellstoriesofcamplifeandrivercrossingchallengesontheNewForkRiver,andhowtheLanderTrailwasconstructed.Emigrantquotesfromjournalspersonalizethestories,andcolorfulillustrationstakevisitorsbackintimetotheemigrantera.

DuringtheweekofJune22,NTIRwillfacilitateaDCPcharetteforphaseIIinPinedale,Wyoming.
