Our Mission…

“At certain times, I think, you need to stand on the railroad tracks and scream at the train to stop. You’re a player in this game, and

there’s a responsibility, when you’re a citizen, to the sanctity and the ethics of our system.”

Section 201 Tariff

• 30 percent tariff applied to PV cell and

module imports from most countries

• 11% reduction to US solar demand

predicted between 2018 and 2022 –

7.6 gigawatts worth

• Government to issue mid-term report in

2020 assessing impact

Section 301 Tariffs

• U.S. Government has imposed three sets of special tariffs on more than $260

billion in imports into the United States from China.

• Only products originating in China are covered by the duties.

• Solar-related products include PV cells and modules, inverters, transformers, and

most other balance of system components.

• Tariffs range from 10-25%, with all tariffs rising to 25% in Jan. 2019.

• Most Chinese suppliers are shifting production to other countries to avoid the

tariffs.

PV Recycling

(50 billion plastic water bottles were used in 2017

– only 23% were recycled)

SEIA’s PV Recycling Initiative

• SEIA Members and industry work proactively to develop end-of-life solutions

• End-of-life management provides business opportunities

• Early collaboration with stakeholders creates reasonable policy and programs

• Opportunity to build recycling activities and resources transitionally as solar adoption grows

California’s Historic Title 24 Mandate

• On May 9, 2018, the California Energy Commission approved a mandate that all new low rise residential buildings be constructed with a PV system, beginning in 2020 – the first such statewide mandate in the U.S.

October 19, 2018

www.seia.org

What it Means for CA’s Solar Industry

• In 2017, only 3% of all residential capacity in California was installed on new construction. The mandate will create significant upside to long-term forecasts

• GTM forecasts that this rule could add 800 MW in additional demand for rooftop solar from 2020-2023 alone

Mainstreaming Energy Storage

• SB700 (Self Generation Incentive Program) provides behind the meter energy storage funding of $830 million through 2025 in CA

• From 176MW to 3,000MW by 2026 in storage

• Incentivizes peak load reduction

• Lottery system weighted towards grid-balancing benefits

• Reduced payouts over life of program

Does your company offer battery storage?

Workforce Diversity – National Census & Survey

• National Solar Jobs Census✓ Ensure that policymakers have complete and accurate data when

making decisions related to the industry

✓Makes clear trends and impacts to the industry

• Oregon and Washington Workforce Survey✓Commissioned by Energy Trust of Oregon and NW Energy Coalition

✓Diversity = higher profits, more market share, employee well-being

Why Industry Action on Consumer Protection

• Consumer protection (CP) is a top priority to SEIA and the solar industry• Reached 1 million residential installations in 2016 after 40+ years, and expected to

reach 2 million by end of 2018 and 4 million by 2023

• Industry success depends on consumers having great experiences

• Increasing interest from states

• Need for more specific tools & resources for consumers and companies

• Need for leadership in CP as industry grows

• Increase consumers’ and business’ understanding of solar transactions

October 19, 2018

www.seia.org

Working with Solar’s National Trade Assoc.

SEIA aims to unite the solar voice nationally, representing the

residential, commercial, and utility-scale markets

• Send an opinion piece to your local paper

• Attend a lobby day

• Participate with SIW and Solar Washington

• Bipartisan, policy, and legislative efforts to move us forward

• More voices = better representation!

Be the Change You Want to See

• #TaketheSeat

➢You are ready, you are competent, you are needed!

• Diversity is crucial and planful

➢OSEIA Board of Directors – 41% female

➢SEIA Board of Directors – 12% female

‘Companies in the top quartiles for racial and ethnic diversity and for gender

diversity are 35% and 15% more likely to have financial returns above their

respective national industry medians’
