National Park Service Directory of Historians, 2009National Park Service Directory of Historians, 2009 Park History Office, 1849 C St., NW (2261), Washington, DC 20240. (202) 354-2214. Fax (202) 371-2229. Web page: http://www.nps.gov/history/. Chief Historian: Robert K. Sutton Research Facilities and Educational Programs A. Collections and Libraries. Materials for research in the history of the National Park Service, the national parks, and subjects commemorated by the parks are available in the NPS History Collection, Harpers Ferry Center, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425, (304) 535-6262, and NPS offices and parks throughout the country. The NPS in Washington maintains the National Register of Historic Places (more than 76,000 listed properties), the National Historic Landmark collection (more than 2,200 files), and the National Register Information System database. The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), and Historic American Landscapes Survey collections, documenting America’s historic architectural, industrial, and cultural landscape resources, are maintained in the Prints and Photographs Division of the Library of Congress; call (202) 354-2159 for information. B. Programs. The NPS park history program includes studies to identify nationally significant historic properties for possible inclusion in the national park system, studies to identify and preserve park historic resources, the preparation of histories of NPS parks and programs, activities to identify and preserve historic maritime resources, and efforts to communicate the history commemorated by parks to the public. The National Register of Historic Places (http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr) and the National Historic Landmarks Survey (http://www.cr.nps.gov/nhl) assist or undertake and process nominations of properties for listing in the National Register and for designation as National Historic Landmarks. The Teaching with Historic Places program (http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/twhp) trains educators, preservationists, and others in ways of using historic places to enrich classroom instruction in such required subjects as history, social studies, geography, and civics. The Historic American Buildings Survey, Historic American Landscapes Survey, and the Historic American Engineering Record (http://www.cr.nps.gov/habshaer) work with other government agencies, preservation organizations, professional societies, and universities to document America’s historic architectural and technological heritage through drawings, photographs, and histories.

C. Publications. Park historic resource studies, administrative histories, and maritime resource inventories and preservation guidelines are published in limited quantity for use within the NPS and by other interested parties. A National Register Bulletin series is designed to assist preparers of National Register and National Historic Landmark nominations. Teaching with Historic Places produces classroom-ready lesson plans based on National Register properties and professional development materials; call (202) 354-2238 for information. The Historic American Buildings Survey, Historic American Landscapes Survey, and the Historic American Engineering Record publish standards for historical documentation and occasional books and brochures. The journals CRM: The Journal of Heritage Stewardship (http://www.cr.nps.gov/CRMJournal) and Common Ground (http://www.cr.nps.gov/CommonGround), contain articles on the management and interpretation of cultural resources. Books and brochures on topics commemorated by historical parks are published for general public availability by the NPS Division of Publications, Harpers Ferry Center, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425; (304) 535-6011. D. Fellowships and Awards. The NPS offers annual Historic Preservation Fund grants to tribal and territorial groups for physical and cultural preservation projects, and partnership funding to state and local governments and nonprofit battlefield preservation groups working to protect threatened Civil War battlefields.
