NCI/GATXApplication to New Paint 15 January 2015

NCI & ObjectiveOn 15 January 2015, at the GATX facility in Hearne, TX, Nano-Clear Industrial (NCI) polyurethane/polyurea hybrid aliphatic clear

penetrating coating was applied to a tank car with new 3 day cured epoxy mastic paint.

NCI & ObjectiveThe objective of this demonstration/field test is to compare NCI performance on new paint to NCI performance on oxidized/weathered

paint (conducted at the same facility 24 June 2014) – at which lifecycle stage of the tank car does the tank car realize the greatest protection.

NCI & ObjectiveThe overarching goal of both demonstrations is to eliminate or extend

one re-painting maintenance cycle saving the company more money than the cost of applying the NCI.

Disclaimer: This presentation does not constitute an endorsement by GATX, it is presented by Industrial Solutions USA as a “Best Practices” maintenance solution.

The Problem…The Bet Epoxy type paints

oxidize quickly i.e. begin to breakdown

This rapid breakdown reduces the protective properties of the paint film which allows corrosion to begin

The Problem…The Bet The progression of

the corrosion will require the entire car to be re-painted earlier than desired-$$$

The bet is will fortifying the epoxy with NCI result in extending the car’s

unbreached protection system beyond 10 years

Before NCI The tank car was painted in the

beginning of the week and allowed to

cure for 3 days.

The car was placed in the paint booth

the morning of 15 January 2015, blown

off and allowed to warm up.

Initial car steel temp. ~45F

Car temp. at application ~62F

Ambient air temp. ~64F

Dew point ~45

∆ ~ 17F

Before NCI

Application NCI

• Spray guns fitted with

519 tips

• Airless sprayer set at

approx. 800 psi

• Approx. 1 gallon of

material required to

prime each of the

sprayers lines

Application NCI

• Tank car size was 20,400

gallons

• Material used to cover the

tank car was ~5 gallons

of NCI

• One spray pass over the

body of the tank car

including the external

hardware

• Result - ~1 mil DFT of

NCI

NCI Before & AfterBefore NCI After NCI

SummaryApplication of NCI to a newly painted tank car …

Faster then an oxidized car because the tank car requires minimal preparation

Faster because the surface being sprayed is more uniform

Less NCI material is required because the new paint does not absorb as much NCI as an oxidized car

SummaryApplication of NCI to a newly painted tank car …

The end result of applying NCI on a weathered/oxidized is

a very significant improvement in the car’s protective

envelope – applying NCI to newly painted tank car results

in an excellent monolithic protective coating

The NCI Advantage

Before NCI

After NCI

Fortifiesepoxy’s limited physical properties

Restoresoxidized color and gloss

Superior

UV absorption and stability

The NCI Advantage

Before NCI

After NCI

High cross linking/high density

cured film means…

Chemical resistance

Service environment survivability

Scratch/breach resistance

Reduced maintenance costs

Extended maintenance cycle

In other words – long term protection

Car’s coating will be reviewed in 12 months…
