PROFILE:
Dr. Sujata Dutta Hazarika is a sociologist with more than fifteen years of experience in research in
areas of sustainability and public policy, governance, sustainable development, education and
natural resource management. Founder faculty and teacher of sociology in the department of
Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Guwahati, she was awarded the Fulbright Senior Research
Fellowship for the year 2010-2011 and hosted by Institute for the Study of Societal Issues (ISSI),
University of California Berkeley. In 2009, she initiated the North East Centre For Research and
Development as the overall in charge of the national centre established by Indira Gandhi National
Open University (IGNOU) to facilitate public policy in North East India through Research and
Development .It envisioned a think-tank for this region in order to create and manage an authentic
Data base for its vast, diverse and unexplored Natural and bio-cultural resources that could
facilitate and Impact Public policy and Development planning in North East India. She is the founder
of GISDP(Global Initiative For Sustainable Development and Planning), as a North South think
tank initiative to redefine economy and business through sustainable public policy grounded on
innovation , inclusion, access, equity, environment . Currently she is Deputy Director at Kolkata
Regional Centre, her services dedicated and aligned to the broader mandate of IGNOU,
democratize education for the creation of an inclusive knowledge based society through
technology mediated open and distance learning.
