Any builder is eligible to have a home certified by the NAHB Research Center– Universal Access

– NAHB Member and Non-member

– Levels of Performance• Bronze – Silver – Gold

• Emerald (National Green Building Standard – when available)

HBA Participation

• Any HBA may offer third-party certification to builders as part of a new or existing local/state program through the NAHB Research Center

• Co-branding via agreement between NAHB Research Center and HBA on a case-by-case basis

Customization

• Regional and local emphasis (i.e. water efficiency) can be accommodated from the additional 100 points in the program criteria for local program certification co-branding

• Program criteria may not be modified

Certifying A Home

• Builders will use the online green scoring tool located on the www.nahbgreen.org to determine points for the “green” features and components to be included in the new home design

• Once the builder has completed the online green scoring tool design, the application process for certification of the new “green” home can be initiated online

• The NAHB Research Center and/or participating HBA will assist the builder with locating an accredited verifier

• Accredited verifiers will be listed on www.nahbgreen.org

• After the verification process has been completed, the verifier submits evidence that the points needed to achieve the certification level being sought have been verified per the program criteria

• The NAHB Research Center will review the documentation provided by the verifier and award the Certificate of Certification

Certification Fees

• The fee to have a “green” home certified through the NAHB Research Center $150 per home for NAHB members; does not include verification services

• For non-members, a higher fee will be charged to reflect the actual cost of the certification services

• Fee paid by builder for verification services will be established by and paid directly to the individual verifiers, not the NAHB Research Center

Verifiers

• The NAHB Research Center will establish national network of accredited verifiers for the certification program

• The NAHB Research Center will accredit all verifiers; and offer training and testing services to individuals seeking to become an accredited verifier

Verifiers

• Verifier status is open to any individual that meets the program experience pre-requisites

• Employees of HBAs and builders seeking certification for homes under the program are not eligible to apply for verifier status

• All accredited verifiers will be charged a registration listing fee of $125 per year

• Verifier agrees to keep in confidence any information gathered from the builder during the verification process, including the results of the scoring

Verifier Qualifications

Qualifications required of candidate verifiers to perform the duties above include:

• 1 year of acceptable professional experience in home building and green building practices, OR

• 12 hours of acceptable green training, OR

• Designation by NAHB as a Green Building Professional, OR

• Professional certification from Green Advantage (USGBC), OR

• NARI Green Building Certification from National Association of the Remodelers Industry (NARI)

Verifier Accreditation

In order to become accredited by the NAHB Research Center, a candidate verifier must:

• Maintain an appropriate knowledge base and skill sets for the NAHB Model Green Home Building Guidelines (and the forthcoming ANSI National Green Building Standard, once available)

• Complete NAHB Research Center verification procedures training session, and pass a test on how to verify compliance to the program criteria.

• Sign a Verifier’s Agreement

• Pay the annual $125 verifier listing fee set by the NAHB Research Center

• Maintain appropriate records and be available for periodic audit of their verification process at least annually by the NAHB Research Center

• Attend an annual continuing education seminar approved by the NGBP
