Welcome & Let’s Play

4 Parts of the BrainCerebrum, Limbic System, Brainstem, & Cerebellum

Cerebrum

Often called the “CEO of the Brain”---Area responsible for higher levels of thinking, including critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, logic and reasoning skills, and cause and effect of our actions.

Limbic System

Often called, the “emotion brain” -- Area responsible for emotion and memory. It is the source of our emotions and motivations, especially those linked to survival such as fear and anger as well as our responses to reward and punishment. The limbic system is also involved with feelings of pleasure.

What are some decisions you have

made recently?

4 Parts of the BrainCerebrum, Limbic, Brainstem, & Cerebellum

Brain StemCerebellumAlso called the ‘small brain’ or

‘little brain’, the cerebellum is an

extremely important part of the

brain. It has many vital functions,

such as being responsible for

balance, posture, motor control,

language, attention and mental

imagery.

v Recent studies have also

shown that the cerebellum

plays an important part in our

cognitive functions, one being

our attention, especially the

way we focus and capture

images.

Sometimes referred to as the

“reptilian brain”--The brain

stem connects the rest of the

brain to the spinal cord,

which runs down your neck

and back. The brain stem is

in charge of all the functions

your body needs to stay

alive, like breathing,

sleeping, digesting food,

and circulating blood.

4 LobesWhat are some activities and actions that you did today that fit with each of the lobes?

“I was glad my frontal lobe was working this morning as it helped

me decide what to wear, what to choose

for breakfast, and what to pack for my

lunch today.”

Connecting ActivityUsing Metaphors

Metaphor: a figure of speech in which a word or phrase literally denoting one kind of object or idea is used in place of another to suggest a likeness or analogy between them

Brain/Computer

(Resource: https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/metaphor)

How can you use “brain” and “computer” to make a metaphor?

Now try a few more –the challenge is to be as creative as possible. You can draw or write out your metaphors.

*Objects will be given to each pair/group. Good Luck!

Right or Left Brained? What do you think?

Partner Activity-Investigation

After the Activity• How many of you were right-hand dominant?

• How many of you chose the opposite hand/foot in one of the tasks? ◦ Any insight into what may have caused this?

Ø There are many people that have a dominant hand, but then perform other activities with the other hand. For example, someone may be right-handed but in baseball, be a left-handed batter.

◦ Does anyone else know of someone like that? Do you perform any activities with your non-dominant hand?◦ What might that tell us about our brain?

True or False? You are either Right-Brained

or Left-Brained.
