Trend #1: Business Intelligence A significant 87% will
increase IT spends on BI in 2010.
India is fastest growingBI market in Asia.
Interest in Open SourceBI, especially in SME segment.
New BI models (SaaS-based BI) emerge.
Predictive analysis,real-time performancemonitoring and faster (in memory)analysis.
Trend #2: Green IT Large enterprises moving to CSR, sustainability and Green IT
initiatives Vendors pitching energy efficient products; want green standards Enterprises replacing power hungry devices with energy efficient
ones At the Global level there is more awareness about reducing the
carbon footprint and enthusiasm for carbon credits Manufacturers adhere to strict standards set by Energy Star, RoHS,
WEEE Green data centers
Way to go: Audit your energy consumption and replace equipment, appliances Energy efficient products (low carbon footprint) and data center
consolidation (reduce footprint) Virtualization and Optimization technologies Natural energy resources (Wind farms, Hydro power, solar power) Using products made of environmental friendly materials (LEED
certified) Adopt Corporate Social Responsibility and sustainability initiatives
Trend #3: Virtualization Enterprises see virtualization as a means to cut IT spends and
maximize ROI
CIOs are enthusiastic about it and many have adopted it
Virtualization optimizes usage of IT infrastructure (servers, storage, networks), through consolidation
Reality: Gartner: Globally, only 12% of the server population is virtualized
Indian companies are cautious, in the exploration stage, doing it in phases
M&A and consolidation of IT infrastructure is driving virtualization
Awareness could be better, especially in the mid- and small-sized companies
Trend #4: Cloud computing, SaaS
Service providers are here, Indian companies talking to them 2008: SaaS market in India worth $70 mn Cloud computing market projected to be $1bn Gartner: Worldwide cloud services revenue to exceed $56.3 bn in 2009 Cloud computing can save IT costs: 30 – 60 %
Reality: Low level of adoption, cautious approach, undecided Partial deployment, pilot trials Non-mission critical apps Private clouds, in-sourcing Companies opting for IaaS (Wipro) and SaaS (delivery model)
Dampers: Inconsistent bandwidth, unreliable power, associated costs, security
concerns, interoperability
Trend #5: Unified Communicationsand Web 2.0 tools
Unified communications (UC) enables multi-mode communication on a common platform. It integrates e-mail, instant messaging, Web 2.0 tools, mobile phone, voicemail and video --- with IP telephony as the basic platform.
Frost and Sullivan report : UC market expected to grow by 14.2 percent in 2009, reaching $3.36 billion (approx. Rs 336 crore) by end of the year. Estimated to reach $6.58 billion (approximately Rs 658 crore) by 2014.
The economic crisis has accelerated the adoption of UC tools.
UC is fast becoming a critical business tool and is enabling companies to address real-world challenges like widely dispersed workforces, globalization, rising travel costs and the need to reduce carbon emissions.
Web 2.0 tools: Wikis, social networking, micro blogging
Trend #6: Mobile phones, VAS, connectivity
Growth of mobile subscriptions surpasses landline subscriptions TRAI: Wireless subscription reaches 427.28 Million (June 30, 2009) TRAI: Wireline subscription declines to 37.54 Million 11.9 mn New subscribers in June 2009 Approx. 12 – 14 million new wireless subscribers every month!
Fastest growth in rural sector
Demand for budget handsets and high-end models (business mail)
VAS and apps /appstore will drive mobile telephony growth.
Microfinance apps, value-added services already driving growth in rural sector
With the proliferation of 3G we see demand for DVB-H based services (like mobile TV)
Trend #7: Data Centers
Demand for data center facilities has increased.
Service providers are responding by investing heavily in data centers.
Shift to IP based communication and lower bandwidth costs has seen more players in the data center space (traditionally Telecos).
Client-server model is being replaced by SOA and Web 2.0.
Focus on reducing the footprint (by consolidating systems and virtualization)
Focus on reducing opex – by reducing energy consumption and cooling. Deploying more energy efficient systems.
Components like hard drives utilize less power (40% less in some cases)
Processors shut down segments (like cores) that are idling
Blade servers use less power
Trend #8: Security
IT spending has decreased but cos continue to spend on security Unified Threat Management solutions gaining momentum esp in
small and medium enterprises Greater focus on end-point security Multiple layers of defense Security as a service (managed) gaining more acceptance
Threats: Hackers now motivated by financial gain Cyber crime is more organized; hackers older and professional Sophisticated threats: Cross-site scripting (XSS), SQL injection,
zero-day exploits
Trend #9: Storage
Digital data is growing at an explosive rate in the enterprise.
Email, user generated content, rich media (docs, attachments)
With cuts in IT spending, companies are adopting storage optimization technologies
Thin provisioning, cloud storage, open storage, data deduplication, eco-friendly storage
Unified storage technologies gaining momentum
Emergence of Green Storage tech; a standard soon

Trend #10: Enterprise applications and Open Source
Large enterprises have already deployed ERP, SCM, CRM etc and are just tweaking these or dealing with integration and interoperability issues.
ISVs are pitching at SMBs.
Many are looking at Software as a Service as a way to lower TCO (pay as you use).
Open Source applications like OpenOffice.org, Apache Web server, Linux distributions are widely adopted in Indian enterprises.
Which trends will impact your industry?
